De-to Posted November 18, 2009 Author Posted November 18, 2009 off my topic slightly but this picture of wigan (top left piccy) in 1980 made me feel a bit sad after going to wigan loads and loads of times between 1973 to 1978/79 ish, what happened to the casino it looks so empty !!!,no smart answers like russ w had just started his spot !!!,

They left the Main Room doors open, so was a bit spooky looking at a completely empty Wigan.

Barry Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 when was that barry? after the official last niter?. must have been a wierd feeling seeing that Round about late 1980 if my memory serves me mate. It went on like that for a while, it was a shame but it came back with a vengeance.
De-to Posted November 21, 2009 Author Posted November 21, 2009 barry, blimey i cant believe an empty wigan casino in 1980 and only mr m`s open,!!! im sort of glad i stopped going now because the last time i went to the casino it was absolutely banged out queues to get in main room packed out mr m`s packed out record bar area packed out baking hot and sweaty all night every all-nighter we done was brilliant i still cant hack the fact that mr m`s was only open so why did the casino go so quiet and then pick up again because it shut in about 1981,

As for Wigan looking quiet, I remember there being just over 100 in on particular saturday after the oldies night. Good thing they didn't open Mr M's
Guest Nick Harrison Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I think it was me that originally put the live clips up, was a while back. As for Wigan looking quiet, I remember there being just over 100 in on particular saturday after the oldies night. Good thing they didn't open Mr M's Some of the best nites, where had by the "selective connoisseuers" , who welcomed Mr M's closure - (Darren??) after the oldies niters. It was a nite for a dedicated handful, who could intergrate the love of the "newer" 60's and 70's sound back then. Thanks to Pat, Nev and Richard.
Diddy Morgan Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 i attended wigan casino until its demise and can never remember the main room not open on a saturday barry, the sats after the oldies were the best nites for me most times only a couple of hundred in but there was a magical mix of 60's n 70's that will never be forgotten by the few

The the main room always open and only a few in the record bar.
Diddy Morgan Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 nick, i attended the casino from 78 to 81 and the main room was never shut on a saturday . once there was motown allnighter on a mid month friday held in mr m's cos it was so poorly attended only time main room wasnt open to my knowledge, would ave been about 1980 though

Shsdave Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Think l've mentioned this before on here.l once went to a mid-month Oldies once and they only opened M's and everyone thought it had been cancelled...Dec 1980 Last "normal" saturday i went to must have been early '81 maybe late'80 (pretty sure I heard Alfie Davison if thats any guide,) & main room was practically deserted, very small groups here & there & a handful of people at best on the dance floor which was a bit of a bummer seeing as I'd travelled up from London on National coaches on my own Not one of my best decisions !!!! Sure they opened M's & I think most people disappeared up there, possibly what Barry remembers ? After that I never went on a saturday night until the last one..................& then the next last one. I stopped going to last ones after that but are those what you are refering to Barry with "but it came back with a vengeance". I just can't imagine a saturday night picking up after being so empty ?
boba Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 At the time they were played out as The Chessmen - What you gonna do & Rock Candy - Makes me feel this way, respectively. well there's not a track by the combinations called "like I never did before" either on kellmac so was he covering up a cover up with another cover up? the flip of "whatcha gonna do" is a ballad called "good bye".
Barry Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Think l've mentioned this before on here.l once went to a mid-month Oldies once and they only opened M's and everyone thought it had been cancelled...Dec 1980 Age does things to a memory, so it may be that is the answer - although I'm sure I went to three nights where M's alone was open, I remember as me mates bessie mate turned up with me mates bird.

grant Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 so who is the track by if its not the combinations, whatcha gonna do - is by the combinations mate
Tony Smith Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 The Combinations "What'cha Gonna Do" was played covered-up as The Chessmen "Like I Never Did Before".
Guest Little Anthony Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 I stopped going in Spring 1980, when there was still a reasonable crowd and then went again towards the end of the year, when it was poorly attended. However, once the news of the closure was confirmed attnedances picked up again with the last few nights being absolutely packed. I think that if it had not closed when it did, all-niters would probably been reduced to once a month or even died away totally.
