sorry, im not a complete ****...i might be other things to other people but a ****...no and i wouldnt put that label on ted, des, ginger or anyone else, particularly in the djing fraternity who owns one. if they, like me were hooked just by the spine-tingling intro, thats enough reason to have it at any cost. i have to admit as well, that i had not seen one "in the flesh" until stoke...then i saw gingers and arthurs within 20 mins as they hit the decks.

It's amazing how the internet has opened things up. For so long so rare and then three come along in a few months. Same with Lester Tipton...I am already on record as saying I don't like it, but I do accept it has "All nighter appeal". :hypo:

cant believe we're going down this road again, 3 copies of william powell have turned up in a 12 month period, so what ??????, even if they keep turning up at this rate demand will still exceed supply for the next 20 years. i personaly love the record, however, i can see why many hate it, if you strip it down and compare it to some of the great soul masterpieces, then musicaly its a piece of shit, but, i think thats the charm of many of the records that weve come to love over the years, many of the back street low budget recordings are out of tune, or the singer is lacking in the talent department, lester tipton & george lemons immiedietly spring to mind, however, they are still great northern soul records, i personally cant stand george lemons, but its a great northern soul record, if the scene was about musical perfection we would bin 90% of the records that have been played over the years, take, for instance herbert hunter, i have never heard anyone ever say they dont like it, its been accepted as one of the truely great records of our scene, but listen to those horns...out of tune or what

..life's too short to worry about a trifling 5k, if id got it id spend....no problem!

I'm with you Rob, any money spent on anything other than records is a waste !

On another recent thread about most expensive demo's and issues somebody posted up the popsike Top 50 most expensive list, and I quickly scanned down it and I counted 12 copies of the Sex Pistols G.S.T.Q. Top price was 12,675, and that's with 12 copies out of this list of 50. It's worth noting that this list only contained 3 n/s 45's ( Lady In Green, J.D.Bryant & Jnr McCants)

I can't think of any rare soul 45 that would appear 12 times on ebay and still fetch twelve grand? Are there twelve collectors on the scene who are capable and willing to spend twelve grand cash on one 45 today ?

Slightly off on a tangent, I've got a simple way to decide whether I think a record's overpriced. I ask myself this-

if you went to a venue and it was in a box for a fiver and when you asked the dealer why it was so cheap he said " Oh they've just found thousands of them" would I want to still buy it?

This helps me to decide if I truly like the record, or am I just caught up in the mystique of the rarity of this particular 45. If I truly like the record then to own it you've got to pay the going rate*, or you won't get one, simple. If boxes full of William Powell's turned up @ £5 I'd buy two, just in case something happened to one copy I'd still have one to play.

(* Of course people get lucky and find bargains, and the more effort they put in to their record hunting the luckier they tend to get in my experience, but mostly you have to pay close to book price, or maybe dollars for pounds, which these days is hardly a bargain)

p.s. is it only me that thinks this William Powell tune would make a great inst dancer?

It were only two Lester Tipton (as long as you are on about those mint minus to excellent copies that Brad had), both came from the same source and were once owned by Lou Beatty himself...before he brought thgem to a local liquor store were they "lived" for the next 45 years...

William Powell , TSU Toronados (1000 Wonders) ...small quantity found yes but with effect on a wider scale ? Surely not IMO.

I am sure these will all stay very rare records at this point Marc. Mint minus Lester Tipton's? - mines only VG as I think most of the earlier ones were  Steve
