THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF DEE-JAYS:

1) THOU SHALL NOT PLAY BOOTS OR CARVERS

(unless it is at a venue where no one either knows the difference or cares)

2) THOU SHALL TELL THE GATHERED WHERE THE RECORD WAS FROM.

(when one has nothing of more interest to say or, to enhance the learning of those attending who are on Adult Education courses for a Geography GCSE)

3) THOU SHALL BRING AT LEAST 400 RECORDS FOR A 20 RECORD SET.

(in case there is a nuclear war and the event is a 'lock-in' until the nuclear fall-out clears)

4) THOU SHALL ONLY EXCLUDE RECORDS FROM THE 400 BOX IF THEY ARE LIKELY TO BE REQUESTED BY THOSE ATTENDING EVENT.

(unless requested by the cute blonde in the little black dress)

5) THOU SHALL CONGRATULATE FELLOW DEE-JAY ON HIS / HER SET.

(not just because he/she has better records than you but also to hide the jealousy)

6) THOU SHALL ALWAYS 'HANDLE' REQUESTS FOR RECORDS LIKE 'THE SNAKE' OR 'NINE TIMES OUT OF TEN' BY SAYING "ASK THE NEXT DEE-JAY, I KNOW HE/SHE HAS IT".

(unless requested by the cute blonde in the little black dress)

7) THOU SHALL TURN UP JUST TEN MINUTES BEFORE ONE'S DUE TO PLAY.

(not worrying about double plays because the dee-jay before you would have played it on a 'boot' or issue where you will be playing it on an original or demo, therefore it's a different record)

8) THOU SHALL NEVER SAY WHERE A RECORD WAS 'BIG AT' OR FIRST PLAYED.

(there will always be someone attending who actually went to said venue and ready to argue about your statement)

9) THOU SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THE ONLY THING A BRITISH ISSUE IS GOOD FOR IS POKING THE MIDDLE OUT WITH ONES' FINGER.

(this does not pertain to demos because it may spoil the big letter A in the middle therefore making it hard to know which side to play)

10) THOU SHALL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT RECORDS LIKE "AIN'T NO STOPPING US NOW" BELONG IN THE WEDDING/HEN NIGHT PLAY BOX AND NOT THE NORTHERN/RARE PLAY BOX, IT IS NEITHER.

(if deliberately placed in the northern / rare box one should only play when a large hen party of cute blondes are in attendance at the event)

10A) IF ONE IS A DEE-JAY AND PROMOTER ONE SHOULD ONLY BOOK DEE-JAYS WHO MAY BOOK YOU FOR HIS/HER EVENT IN RETURN

10c) Thou shalt play thy five or six big money tunes every time, no matter how sick of them everyone is, despite having thousands of better and cheaper sounds.

Posted

11: Thou shalt ALWAYS blame the equipment no matter how ham-fisted and useless you are

12: Thou shalt always start every track by saying ".....and here's another one from the Windy City" (even if it's not!).

13: Thou shalt take no notice WHATSOEVER about the large empty wooden space in front of your decks - remember you are not a jukebox.

No rules or regulations.A feel for the crowd and the right music. I'd say 99% of those who go to Soul Venues are'nt going go up to the jocks for requests and long as the sounds being played can keep the large majority of them on the floor. To me it's the so called purists, some collectors, some D J's and also those with penty of money who can realy get on my T*TS. All for the sake of just to be able to say i've got this sound or that one. Thank F*ck this seems only to be on a small scale.Their were times when you'd save for weeks for that elusive sound that you just could'nt hear enough of which mean't going without other things for weeks on end. Im sure there are lots of people who this still applies to.Then there's those with loads of brass who just want to buy the four figured rare sounds just to say they've got them and not for the music on that piece of plastic [ GET A LIFE . Most paying punters realise how expensive some records can be. If you're a jock and somebody asks for a record and you have'nt got it, just give honest reply in the right manner. There's only so many answers you can give --i.e I have'nt got it with me today, ** I are'nt much for that one meself so never bothered to buy it. ** Have'nt got that one meself mate i'd love to have it but can't afford it. ** I'm sure most of the D J's adhere along these lines and now and again they get the funny f*cker who won't accept your HONEST reply.Well just tell them to F*k themselves off and if that dont work Chin the C*nt cause i'm sure when the person explains how that situation arose to the organisers and those those who they have attended the venue with, everybody should or wil be on your side.THE money, snobbery + patronizing side of the Soul Scene today seems to be on a much larger scale to when i embraced all the things that revolved around OUR music.Their's always been those who are more knowledgeable than others about OUR music, BUT when i was younger most folks were only to happy to help or enlighten you with any answers thrown their way, it seemed, they remembered how they at one time saw themselves wthin me.Yes there were people who thought they were better and above us , but not as much as today. The music ! WELL I can't get my head around the anti OLDIES brigade.Do they honestly want to denny those joining the Scene the chance to listen to classic SOUNDS from upto 50 years of this scene[ selfish t*ats ], At Wigan Casinothey apparently opened Mr M's as a overspill from the main room and i am eternally gratefull for that. As a 16 year old in 1974 i was already accustomed to all the classic + commercial Soul from my youth club day's and was becoming aware of a underground Soul Music scene. I'd already had a taster by attending the TOP RANK,HANLEY in December 1973 for a 16 hour do. 'This was music i loved but not heardon a large scale. These were Soul sounds i'd never heard, but would make your hair stand on end on hearing for them for a first time. Also in 1974 there were elders who'm where only to happy to show you all the ropes. [must say that NEIL ALLEN * nogger ] first enlightened me to the rare side of Soul Music and i am forever eternal to him for that. The narcotic's side was up to each individual wether you induldged or not.So back to Mr M's at the Casino. I Heard so many new + great sounds in there that the memories still linger on. This was Education of music i loved on a TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE level. New sounds in the main room & Oldies in Mr Ms [ these were'nt OLDIES in Mr M's to me though ]. These were just more sounds of the music & scene i was keen to embrace. In Mr M's i was informed by my elders and new friends about these sounds new to me were from by gone days like the TORCH, the WHEEL + MECCA that were before my time. They would inform + help you you to intergate into this rare underground scene and pass on all their knowledge, but not in a patronizing way. In my eyes it was like you were being welcomed into a family who appreciated that you, like them loved this TOGETHERNESS + Music.TODAY there's to much polictics involved in the sceneand talking politics always ends uop with brawling. There's those who preach no OLDIES ? why not .Why do some want to denny the necomers on the scene the chance to listen to these records .[ SHELFISH T*ats ]There's those whose heads are that far up their arses it beggers belief They think they know everything about the Northern SOUL Scene[ they probably do ] But ! do there share there knowledge with others who are eager to embrace our music ? NO most of them look at them as numpties. Did they foreget about when they getting involved in scene. The purists who think a person can only qualify as a D J is if every sound they own is on the original label. These qualifications to be a DJ brigade want to get a LIFE because most of us got involved with the scene for the music + togethernes firstly.Put the sound on the deck and lets give it a listen, who gives F*K of what label it is. yeah it's nice to have the origianal. But us non purists realise that we all have certain needs + budgets to get by on. WE don't begrudge those who spend there hard ear'nt money on chasing a rare sound they love. SAD THING IS WHO IN THE RIGHT MIND would want to be if the companny of these sad f*kers ? Not me and i'm sure theirs plenty more alike. So folks PUT YOUR LOVING ARMS AROUND ME, because I LOVE THE LIFE I LIVE and there comes the time for us al went it wil all be SAD, SAD MEMORIES. sorry but i disagree with this, i mysefl dj but the most i have ever spent on a record is £350, but i count myself lucky to be close friends with others who have spent a lot more, as thier circumstances differ from mine, but i'm not jealous or imtimadated by this nor should anybody be.

If thats how it comes across to you mate, it was'nt meant too. It was in no way intended to insult you or other's like yourself. The likes of yourself on the scene are the ones i admire for their passion to persure these expensive elusive sounds. The point i was trying to get across is - their are now people within the scene who are [ no disrespect to you ] a lot more affluent than ourselves, and money is no object. They buy those £350 sounds that you and the likes of yourself have scrimped and scraped for probably for weeks on end. But most of them don't want that record for the same reasons. Ours is for the love of whats on that piece of elusive piece of vinyl.THER'S IT'S JUST TO SAY THEY'VE GOT ANOTHER RARE PIECE OF VINYL IN THERE BOX. Surely thats sad when it deprives the like of yourself of owning a record you'll embrace and love for all the right reasons. Once again i am truly sorry if i offended you, that was never meant to be. Like i said i have nothing but addmiration for yourself ana others like you.Because you are the ones who bring us the enjoyment at the venues by playing these elusive and expensive Rare Soul Records. The ones who pay the big bucks for it just to gather dust are the ones who i am referring to. They denny us all who embrace the scene for the right reasons. They do you out of buying it, and me getting the chance to listen to it. Once again im', truly sorry if parts of my prior post came across the wrong way. PECKER
