Fake! Can you spot a fake?

FAKE RECORDS

I watched a program the other night about a chap who was conned into buying a fake painting by an artist who had past away many years ago.

The painting was taken to "an expert" who said, in her opinion, that it was a fake based on her experience and knowledge of the artist; she said quote "he would not have painted this figure quite like this and the sky is not his usual bright sky"

Very scientific, I thought!

Then I started to think about the Northernsoul scene and the amount of money that changes hands for our little plastic discs.

Do we have a problem with fakes?

Have we had a problem with fakes?

How can they be spotted?

If I turned up with 20 copies of Frank Wilson how could you tell if they were the real deal? The obvious answer would be to compare them to the one record we all know of, but how can any one say if that was the real one?

I have heard such nonsense like "you just know" or "You get a fee; for these things"

Is it an exact science or is it just a bluffers guess?

I think there are probably a fair number of 'fakes' or rather American bootlegs from the original time of release about - so are they fakes?

I have heard tell of a certain legendary record dealer repressing from the original plates - complete with matrix stamps of course (I understand normal practice was to trash the plates when the press was finished) - if there is no way of telling is it a fake or something else????????

i think that were in a world now where there are fakes of fakes if you get what i mean, just bought of ebay a copy of the beautiful night jimmy thomas on tb super soul for my 70s boot collection, however when it arrives its a weired pale yellow poorly printed new looking copy of the well known early 70,s one, it also appears to be a cross between vinyl and styrene, strange

also i,m sure years ago spellbound demos were all over the place and were thought to be fakes but it seems these days they go for loads, if they were proper ones why were they for sale with all the other big boots at the time at places that only sold boots

I had forgotten about that Dave - I had head the same story many years ago - whether it's true I don't know but I do know there were other offers of tunes to be cut on original 60's vinyl as it is/was more heavy than the modern stuff.

Also heard claims of copies of tunes that hadnt been seen for years turning up every 6months or so from around the same source - this could also been down to a lucky find though.

I agree you do get a feel for these things but admit I have walked away a few times unsure of the authenticity of a record but I'm sure in this day and age with laser printers, scanners etc etc that if someone had the mind to do so they could wing off quite convincing fakes. But god help them when they get caught.
