Guest posstot Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 ...............Actually Stomping. Obviously, most peoples' legs wouldn't move that quick now...As it was definately a young mans game, all that shufflin, turnin and jumpin. Could you manage a one minute stomp now and then, or are you still up for completing a whole track on your toes. I used to slot a stomp into you've been gone too long Ann Sexton.....Or a have some everybody...bumbumbum bumbumbum bum bum bum!!!(right I'm fooked that's enough). You see that's where the Mid-tempo tracks come in handy, giving your stomping legs a rest!! SSSSSSSSOOOOOOOO! Were you a stomper>?, who was the best you remember? (besides me ) and what was your fave track to Stomp too!!!!???? Wow, not seen anyone stomping in years . ( THAT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE ALL OLDER THAN ME ) Miike.

Where I come from it's called shuffling - can just about make half a really short record these days! And we'd "stomp" to the faster dancers like Sam & Kitty, The Jades etc.. Mark C

Guest Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 (edited) Think its more about the sound of the record. A 60s on-the-4 Motown style beat is a 'stomper' because of the relentless 'stomp, stomp' bass drum and snare whereas the 70s records are more zippy, high hat driven with more percussive drum patterns. Thus the 'shufflers' label to match that fast cymbol drive, fast feet, fast high hat beat, get it? Whatever way you dance to it, a true 'stomper' is instantly recogniseable, the difference for instance between something like 'nothing but heartaches' (stomper) and 'job opening' (shuffler) being classic examples. Always referred to that Mecca style as 'shuffling' and so do all my mates but then again there was fantastic shuffling at Wigan too. I think personally, the verb 'stomping' came in as a evolution of language and people have become confused by that. Strange how these words end up meaning different things to different people. Guest Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Is a 'Stomper' a 'Stormer' then!!?? I think a stormer is a very fast big production 'stomper' personally! This is a nice rest from debating the war!

KevH Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Bet she'd lose a 'Dance-Off' to the fella at Wigan who wore a black sleeveless shirt with P-Funk wrote on the back, who danced next to the fellas bogs...................... He tore the roof off the sucker.......

Dont know webby(only went wigan 5 times), just know she was great, could sit and watch any great dancer to be honest, and you got to admit "northern" when done good is the coolest dancing ever, btw, sure Barry May would remember her
The Tempest Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 3am , Morecambe 3rd Anniversary , Central Pier , 1986, still love this record now
Patto Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 STOMPING,Wow used to love it and i was always told i was brill at it .When done right a full floor of good dancers stomping was a joy to behold and much more entertaining than the acrobatics. The dance involved skipping between each foot and quickly flashing your feet as quick as bee's wings all in time to a 100mph beat. Some guys could do it on one leg and throw spins and kicks in to boot. The dancefloor used to bounce its arse off.The Stompers were done to uptempo mainly 60s tracks such as WILLIE MITCHEL--THE CHAMPION SLY STONE---DANCE TO THE MUSIC--or THE FRENCH FRIES VERSION WORLD COLUMN--SO IS THE SUN ANDRE BRASSEUR---THE KID SAXIE RUSSELL---PSYCADELIC SOUL BAJA MARIMBA BAND---ALONG COMES MARY LLOYD MICHELS---THE FLASHER Shuffling was just as skillful but not quite as manic as stomping, more controlled to trickier beat tracks.A similar principle but the feet usually never left the floor and slid on top of it.The Shuffellers usually danced to 70s tracks such as SKIP MAHONEY---JANICE GIL SCOTT HERON---THE BOTTLE WILL COLLINS--IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO LOVELITES---GET IT OFF MY CONSCIENCE MICKEY MOONSHINE---NAME IT YOU GOT IT FLAME N KING--HO HAPPY DAY This is all just a generalisation and it did seem to differ from region to region. My area of Donny was full of great lads who would only dance the Stomping way, then you could travel a few miles and find a club who didn't like em and prefered the records that allowed floor work acrobatics. Its all part of the great diversity of Northern Soul everyone has there own styles within the basic framework.Back to the original question the last time i saw a floor packed with people ALL STOMPING is back to the Hatfield Spiral Youth Club circa 1979/80.The last time i saw a floor full of SHUFFELLERS was Rotherhams Clifton Hall circa 1983/4 Have to say now a days it seems the ladies are better than the guys at both types of this dance maybe the artheritus sets in later in women, but still see some guys doing it in short bursts
Miss Wasperella Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Do you know who l mean,Kev??!! Tall, thin, black hair...and when T-Connection came on,it was time to sit down and just look in amazement!! Glad you sorted that out for me. To save me explaining myself to everyfooker! Whoever it was that mentioned Janice from leigh..Janice was one of the tracks to be played at our local Disco in Culcheth(the parish) where i first saw people stomping, when i was 11. Very good. think Flaming Emeralds and 7th Wonder were ultimate stomping / shuffling* records because they were so fast and rhythmically strong. Still a few around who give it a go. * in the south it was shuffling, stompers were things like Judy Street!
