I am sure i speak for all record sellers when i make this plea to all potential record buyers....

When you email someone asking for a record from their sales list and they confirm they are holding the record for you, you have reserved that record to buy so please then honour the deal and pay the seller for that record.

You wouldn`t believe the number of people who waste everyones time ordering records only to have the seller hold the record and then when the seller contacts them they suddenly dont want the record anymore!

If you cant afford it or you dont really want it then please dont order the bloody thing!

When you order a record from a seller they take it off sale and often turn down other buyers who would happily part with their cash...only for the sale to fall through some time later due to poor manners.

Surely nobody on here can disagree with this request!?

It all comes down to good manners in the end.

Chris.

good points -selling records at the momment is hard imho-manners-well a whole new argument imo-i will say 90% of potential buyers on here are mint -imo-no hassles etc-good people infact ive even send records and awaited payment twice with people i respect not even worrying about the money because I know its good etc! I do agree however that timframes should be agreed etc -some can come out the woodwork, agree payment and then nothing -it doeshappen and its a pisser!!!

dont sell as much as you chris, but anyone who has wanted a record off me has followed through.

the only thing which is a a pain is was when they say ill pay you when i get back from work.5 days later still waiting for payment.

the way i see it is the quicker you pay the quicker you get the record.

I wasn't going to post on this thread, mainly to avoid saying something I might later regret. But it's beyond a joke now and seems to be getting worse . Got 3 little stacks of 45 on my desk in front of me, organised like this:

Stack 1: 45s that have been reserved, all the buyers for these have either made contact with me and arranged a later date for payment or have paid a small deposit. Brilliant, never a problem if people need bit longer to pay or need to wait for payday etc....always happy to try and help, all I ask is that prople make contact to keep me up to date.

Stack 2: 45s reserved, buyers for these have been in contact to say unfortunately they are unable to complete the transaction for xyz reason. Annoying and a touch frustrating when this happens but fair play to these people. They've bit the bullet and contacted me with an apology, as I said above all I ask is that people let you know what's happening as they have for this small stack and I can now relist and try to sell the 45s again.

Stack 3: the stack that makes my blood boil and basically f***s me up. Here I'e got reserved 45s where the 'buyer' has missed the agreed date for payment. No contact from any of them despite sending emails asking them to please let me know what is happening. Value of this stack.....£440 ohmy.gif. Now I'm small time compared to the main dealers, but rely on sales to pay my bills and give me bit of cash to do stuff with the kids etc (yes and buy other records). All these stacks have been built up in just 4 weeks. Like most I plan out my finances for the month to ensure I cover all bills and know what money is left over to spend, in this planning I always assume I will receive only 70% of monies owed to ensure I don't over estimate my available funds. Normally I get 90%+ of stuff paid for as expected but that rate is plummeting. £440 over a month means I've planned on getting roughly £300 paid but in fact got £0. £300 is the about the amount I need to pay my share of the mortgage each month. Seeing as people are ignorant enough to not pay me and not even let me know then why should I be nice about it? Well I'm not, named below the 3 people who have made no contact or payment and are the longest overdue, next week I'll name the next 3 most overdue.

Name removed.

I'd like to ask them this question....WHY HAVE YOU NOT EVEN HAD THE DECENCY TO GET IN TOUCH??? I will, of course delete the name and apologise if there has been a genuine personal reason for lack of payment/contact.

Expect I'll regret this post in an hour's time but it seems to be acceptable to name sellers who don't do things right but every transaction is a two way thing. Oh, just to save anybody who is annoyed with me for this a bit of time....(last time I threatened to name someone I had a call from HMRC)......I'm a registered business with full accounts and pay all my taxes so have nothing to fear from the taxman. Plus I'm certainly not only doing this whilst hiding behind my PC, I'm out at a venue most weekends and am happy to ask the same question face to face.

You've got to start drawing a line Adam, I've had this problem from day one so now I ask for immediate payment, if I don't receive it, I sell it to anyone else who asks next. The main problem is people who email and say "can you hold that for me", I reply saying yes, how do you want to pay, meanwhile 2 more people want to order the same record but I'm still waiting for the first one to come back to me. 4 or 5 hours later, still no reply, I sell to the second person. My lost sales go into THOUSANDS over the years from people doing this.

Hi Pete,

You're right and in future I won't hold anything unless a non refundable deposit is paid within 24hours. But it's such a shame that the mutual trust between buyers/sellers is being lost. I've always done what I can to help by holding records, taking payment in installments etc etc....OK used to get the occasional tyre kicking time waster but I could live with that. Now the time wasters are at a level I've never experienced before and they spoil it for the genuine buyers because you start to lose faith in the whole thing. For some, selling isn't just a hobby it pays the bills and non payment can cause serious problems.

Thought maybe Sales section might work better for this thread?

Don't think sales section is the best place Simsy.....nobody is selling anything and if it continues to get posted on by people it will be annoying to those putting up sales threads??

Personally, I always honour all verbal deals, those who know me will never have saved a record that I haven't paid for, sometimes late but always with some communication.

Its a trust between buyer and seller and as in law the guilty till proven unreliable should in my mind be the way to operate.

If sellers black list buyers or move then to cash on account (i.e. remove credit terms) ; its the same as normal business practice and who can complain.

I would recommend never sending a record until paid in full.

I bought Turley Richards, Need To Fall in Love in 2 x £50 installments - the second of which is still due, but I wouldn't let them send the 45 until paid in full - although they were happy to do so.

To me, primarily as a buyer, your name and credibility is important ; so naming and shaming those not so honourable is important ; allowing for emergencies and genuine errors...................

in my limited experience of selling if the cash doesn't come in within 24 hours you are in for a rough ride.

although there have been one or two exceptions where people have specifically said they will pay on a given date and been good to there word.

i'm currently holding 300GBP of records for somebody who seems to have disapeared... ph34r.gif i'm now not expecting this transaction to ever happen.

if this were a way of earning a living I could see it getting very frustrating.

its always a relief when the person who responds to your sale is somebody you know is good for the money thumbsup.gif

Quick follow up....after contact from Dolly I have been informed that there are valid reasons for the previous lack of contact/payment. So as promised I apologise to her for putting her name on this thread.

yes it is a big problem

often us smaller dealers sell stuff and use the money to buy more stock--Before the money is in the pot

so when someone lets you down,it often has a knock on effect

on the other side of the coin

why not let you best customers pay monthly by standing order--as a bonus

and it will keep them buying from you

also--just as bad is the persons who you know aint got any money

and they still ring most days to hear what youve had in new

keith@soulsearcherrecords.co.uk --merry f*ck*n xmas bahhhhhhhhangry.gif

often they cant pay because theyve bought another load of tunes

from someone else in the mean time who aint as helpful

i have a lad who paid a deposit at the Droylsden nighter---and still waiting for the balance

Good on you Adam. One of the people on your list of 3 is known to me a "orderer buy none payer" another is a good customer who always pays on time. Funny thing is when i have a good chat with Shifty about buyers we come up with the same names as time wasters so its just a case of people ordering records they cant afford which is sad really.

The idea behind posting this is to highlight an increasing problem, i`m not going to hark on about me having bills to pay etc its just plain ignorance to order something and then not honour the agreement.

Just to make one thing clear, if anyone asks me for easy terms and sticks to it then I`m always open to that,no problem, its the gits that have aspirations beyond their wallets i`m having a pop at!

ps. I am tax registered and declare everything too.

well done for posting this thumbsup.gif

It's not and has never been my policy to name and shame or block people from sales ,but ,and the scary thing is, i only sell records to buy new purchases. All of my sales are from my box(not spares)no.gif and are more tha nlikely ,cost price or less...

Sadly i have experienced ,of late, people who say they want things holding... i ask for definite confirmation ???? "oh yes i deffo want this"..ok ,no probs ,i'll put a hold on ityes.gif

A week later ....." hi Nev, i no longer want this cos i've found one cheaper"ohmy.gif

As far as i'm concerned ,forget the recession .. welcome to the hard faced world of Northern soul...on soulsourceyes.gif

if this sounds like you ,your either ,very ignorant or HARD FACED, and will most definitely be excluded from future saleswanker.gif

boxing.gif Just as bad as not paying are the ones that bid on auctions pushing up the prices and then either dont have the money or cant pay for a few weeks. that is taking the piss and only making money for the dealer or the owner. a few years ago before on line auctions there used to be a joker who would bid on every record in an auction knowing full well he would not be able to pay for them all the only result was he wass costing other genuine collectors moneyangry.gif

I have no problems with non-paying buyers as I only sell off my web site and paypal ensures I get the money before the record goes.

Biggest problem I have is getting good stock, stuff sells so quick ph34r.gif

This happened at a NOTTS PALAIS ALL-NIGHTER 1978 Can anyone beat this ? I had a buyer pay a deposit on several items which l allowed him to take with the balance to follow - guess what the balance never arrived and l am still waiting - l had him down as a good safe bet at the time !! How wrong l was !! Should l still be living in hope of payment ??? Naaaaah !

PS The value of the 45s back then was around £30.00 - Probably add a bunch of noughts onto them by todays values.

Its been happening years !

Back in the 80s when we had LaBeat Records (Myself & tats) mailorder we used to have one regular offender.

He always got his list early am and was ringing the phone from 7.30 am

As many on here know I'd unplug the phone on list days until 8.30 am and then first come first served !

Anyway said customer ways always in the first 5 callers reserving 4 or 5 good or in-demand records that would "Fly out"- then I'd be chasing him for payment for weeks-which would eventually arrive just before the next list-so he did pay but with hassle.

However he started to reserve stuff and NOT pay after about 7 lists-despite being asked. So I statred sending the list to him a day late-he'd be on the phone but all the genuine customers had had their pick and money was on its way.

Three customers who were DIAMONDS and I got to know well stand out (amoung 100s of others by the way) are Ted Massey, Keith Money and Richard "Dickie" Watts all excellent customers, still doing the business today and all have collections to die for ! ( parts of which were bought from me too cheap !!!!!!) only joking lads  funny thing is i can't remember the offenders name !!

Rob

PS I'd like to add Simon Hunt to the list as well !

It really is extraordinary (and possibly mental) behaviour to order things you're either unable or unwilling to pay for. How difficult is it to send an e-mail telling the seller you no longer require the item so they can put it back up for sale. It's the least one can do - they won't bite and will be pleased to know where they stand.

Another forum I belong to has a 'Heroes and Villains' section where people can relate their experiences buying and selling with other forum members. Whilst such a section is obviously open to abuse it gives folk a good idea of which way the wind blows as certain names (either positive or negative) tend to crop up again and again.
