I prefer the red label one as I think the organ adds a lot and the vocal is even more intense but the yellow label version is also a fine record in its own right. It's a shame in some ways that a lot of the Forte stock turned up in one hit a few years ago as people in certain quarters have got a bit blase about some of the releases. If this was still rare people would be thinking of it as a holy grail: fantastic raw ghetto soul. In a similar vein the Lee Harris "I've Got To Have Someone's Love" on the same label is also a great, brooding midtempo record. Harris recorded the original version of "Don't Let Our Love..." on Forte and some people prefer his, but I think it lacks the atmosphere of Gene Williams reading of the song.

Some debate on this last year when Marva Whitney's version was posted in the 'Crossover' thread. I mentioned then that Marva W Taylor (who is Marva Whitney?) also had a great track on Forte - 'Nothing I'd Rather Be Than your Weakness'. I believe Steve Plumb has a copy for sale for £35.00 Lofty

As Mike says her "Nothing I'd Rather Be" has basically the same backing track, although it sounds cleaned up and/or re-recorded. This was also re-released as the MWT Express on Forte. Ellis Taylor sure liked this this backing track as that's at least five versions on the same label. There may be more!

I think its mroe than just clean up, one of the 2 versions has some backing vocals that don't feature on the other. one of my fave's on the label is Tony Asdley "I'll never be satisfied" there are a few terrible records as well like the rayons so its not all worth picking up.
Kjw Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Not sure but I think the red label issue came first which is why collectors prefer it to the yellow one Although some people want the yellow one for the different take on the B side tune 'Whatever You Do'- think one of them was a studio recording and the other a live recording

I found few copies of Forte label's records at the same time from a same guy on my last trip in USA (incl. these 3 ones + one Fantasticks & one Fabulous Rhythm Makers)...and it was said all records from this label were discovered recently. I don't know the others versions...if someone can post the soundclips & scans. Romain

Vocally and arrangement-wise my favourite version by a country mile. Often referred to as the 'live' version but I don't think that means before a live audience, rather that it's rough around the edges in a 'one-take-one-track' kind of way. Is it just my ears or is this the same group of musicians as on currently-hot Kansas City indies like Theron & Darrell and L.T. & The Soulful Dynamics on Solo?

Did anyone see the second known copy of the Everyday People on Forte sell for over $5000 on ebay the other day? Man, it was sort of sad that Ellis Taylor (who sings as well as I do, which is not a good thing) wanted to sing on tracks with Marva (who had one of the most incredible female soul voices in terms of range, power, etc.).
