Regardless of what you think of the mayer hawthorne version, it has upped the desirability of this 45 among casual collectors recently, so it's pretty hot at the moment. There are a few different colored label variations of the Soulhawk press too. I don't know what color came first or if it really matters. But the Soulhawk presses seem to turn up more often than the Westbound in my experience.

Here's a 2009 version of this track that's just out on Stones Throw

Discogs listing

i feel like a total mark for having hyped this dude after that first single, both sides were good and i got a bunch of old school collectors excited and he turned out to be a douche. what a wack remake and useless video.

People seem to really like him....just don't know who those people are? Probably teenage girls?

i bought the Hawthorne LP, I don't hate it, but I don't think it's all it's hyped up to be in the press either. Most people who champion it seem to be casual soul listeners at best.

i will ride for the hawthorne record. it gets better every time i listen to it. there are a couple of corny tracks and a couple songs sound like the singer is whining but i think it was a great package overall. green eyed love is fresh and is one of my favorite smoke songs. my other favorite tracks are make her mine cause the words and melody is so relaxing, shiny and new & i wish it would rain blow my mind everytime i hear em.

great record... stop hating.

I love the westbound label but for me the soulhawk label has more of a classic look to it. I always like when the label is simple and the music speaks for itself.

I'd go with you on the label look and vote for the SoulHawk, but for the tunes the Westbound release has a great flip 'My Baby Ain't No Plaything' and is best value as a great double-sider..

i think he's talking about weed, again, not selling me on the record.

i did tell everyone about the record and even got a bunch of older collectors in east chicago calling me up asking me to record "just ain't gonna work out" when I played it, I was hyping it up like crazy. Those guys aren't looking to see hipsters at a party in a video.

now I'm hating

bob are you hating because hes a douchebag or because you dont like the music? i just dont see a problem with the music. i know cats hate on it cause hes white or he covered a tune but not good enough, etc etc. i can understand hating on something especially when you meet the dude and he sucks ballsacks. ive been there as well.

I think maybe so maybe no was unnecessary, it adds nothing to the original and just references it for people who haven't heard it. I actually thought at least the temptations cover was an original interpretation of the song (but still wasn't good). Everything I've heard past the first single just wasn't good. I'm just hating because I don't like the music and because I think it's catering to a group of people who don't know or care about the original music but who supposedly do, and he seems to be the same in his attitude. If you listen to my radio show, I gave a lot of props to the first single (both sides actually). It's all about the music, I didn't just see his image and decide to hate.

Also I specifically have a thing against overdubs in music, I think people should be using backing vocalists and I think he sort of pulls it off on his first record (which would be even better if he got some other dudes to add extra voices) but it makes his other weak records even weaker. I think people who make music now and rely solely on overdubs reveal a lack of understanding of old soul music and how important vocal harmony was. There is something very important in the timbral contrast of the different voices that gets lost when you just overdub your own voice.

Also, I have only heard the singles he put out and have not heard the whole album. His image doesn't help as it adds to the idea that he's catering to a bunch of people that don't know or care about old soul music except about the idea of it.

well okay. i agree with you on the dubs. definitely could have been done better. i think the album is very listenable though. if you ever get the chance check it out.
