Ged Parker Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I've just been contacted by a friend on Faceache with the following message "i need a really good northern soul cd to impress a woman with! can you burn me one? i'll pay p&p...." How the hell do you choose what to put on a CD for someone that could be an avid all nighter goer up on all that's current or alternatively have a distant memory of Muriel Day. I wouldn't be much of a 'wing man' if I got it wrong and he needs all the help he can get I have asked him for some more clues but it's not easy to explain is it.

Not an easy job , does she like Northern soul ? or is she new to it ? either way i would put some uptempo 60's girly sounds on they are so easy going and happy, almost everyone likes 60's music in some shape or form , so that could be a winner xxxx
Professorturnups Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 A girl in my office has told me her husband used to like Northern and is thinking of doing one of the local Norwich nights. So I've dug out a CD we gave away at the Backstreet Soul Club a few years back. It contains some stompers, Motown and one or two tracks from well known artists (Ike & Tina etc) Hopefully it will do the trick. No Snake, Bottle, Moonlight Music & You etc though! Mark

Mark I think the same, also girlie 60's numbers like Di says! It needs to grab her attention from the off so i would start with a couple of stormers & ebb & flow from high to mid tempo throughout before slowing it down near the end!

Good thinkin' But how would you program the CD? T
Modernsoulsucks Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 If by "impress" he means "romance" then stick some pretty midtempo stuff on mostly by guys singing about love etc but not getting knickers off or anything like that. If however he means to impress with his selection of rare quality soul could you not ring a mate and borrow some. ROD
Philt Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I've just been contacted by a friend on Faceache with the following message "i need a really good northern soul cd to impress a woman with! can you burn me one? i'll pay p&p...." I wouldn't be much of a 'wing man' if I got it wrong and he needs all the help he can get I have asked him for some more clues but it's not easy to explain is it. Ged bang a load of motown on it with a smattering of modern / disco type things and tell your mate - whilst relying on pub landlord-esque philosophizin - to utter the immortal words: "that's all you need to know sweets." I do understand your predicament though. When I first met my missus I tried the "I'm a soulie, its my life and therefore you too must love and embrace it" routine (which, as you well know, was fairly cutting edge in Barrow in the 1980s!). "Listen to this tape, you'll like it, particularly the Tony Middleton (spanish maiden) track; what with it's latin influence you girls are sure to love it". Eighteen years of marriage later she still tells me how much she hates it and has done "ever since you did me that bloody tape" So, come to think of it, your load is lighter because even if it's shite it won't matter in the short term. However, the price for getting it wrong will be paid in full from here to eternity. No pressure then ...

Ged Parker Posted October 29, 2009 Author Posted October 29, 2009 Thanks for the conflicting advice everyone Mark has sent me this reply to my plea for more guidance: "oh honestly..... she goes to a couple of the clubs down here around hertfordshire - i've had a look at her cd collection and her taste looks pretty mainstream - just those usual northern compilations that everyone has, and some more soul type soul - basically i just want something that will excite her and make her happy, whilst being a bit less mainstream than the usual compilations. You are so precious Mr Parker!! i mean obviously being a woman she loves the original tainted love, we bonded over al wilson so like i say, pretty mainstream. i would guess older stuff." So it's the simple task of oldies like Tainted Love and The Snake but less mainstream There's a couple of you female types from Letchworth area on here I seem to remember. If it's one of you your too good for him btw

Ged, tell him to cut to the chaste, and insist he's an OVO guy, and would a 7 inch version of the snake do for starters, would also suggest he wears a hard hat and gumshield in case of a negative response
Guest Mrs M Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 I have just been looking over some of last months topics and find this subject very amusing to say the least. Have you guys ever thought for a minute that there are a lot of girls on the scene who have just as much knowledge as many of the boys. We have great record collections and impeccable taste where we have many a time educated you guys on records, labels, prices etc.. I hope you managed to impress your new woman but if you want my advise the best way to impress a lass is to treat her as your equal, talk records, labels, c/up's with her but don't underestimate her taste and her enthusiasm for hearing new sounds and getting to hear records which she may have never heard even though you have. One thing you lads might want to keep in mind - there may be girls playing "dumb" as a test to see just how clued up you are. You may be compiling cd's with tracks that she heard first time out and even owns an original... Now how unimpressed would she be then!!!

If someone gave me a cd on our first date I would find it quite strange. What if she like heavy metal or techno music ?? In my experience when you try to impress someone it always backfires. What if she really likes it and discovers he was lying all along. Honesty is the best policy. I do find it very amusing that some men think that women only like pop, girly group or smooth sexy music. This thread just reminds me of all the times that men have approached me at soul events thinking that I know nothing about the music. One guy went on and on about the history of northern soul saying that he loved the music blah blah but when I quizzed him he actually had'nt heard of Wigan Casino, had only been to the 100 club two times in his life and usually frequented night clubs such as the ministry of sound. He was just a trendy type trying it on. I do collect records and have a real passion for the music as do many women on the scene.
