Chris Bartley

Recommended Posts

Had a message earlier today from a friend Stateside telling me that Chris Bartley had died. waited until now to get confirmation and can now confirm it is true. No real details as yet but thought it right to post about his passing. A fantastically soulful singer Mr Bartley was a perfect foil for the talents of Van McCoy and recorded some of the most sublime mid tempo songs that Van created. Mr Bartley's only main rival in this particular style of soul was Deon Jackson in my opinion. So.....in true Hitsville fashion...I thank Mr Bartley for some fantastic music and memories, and wish him him a safe onward journey. Congratulations Sir, on a job extremely well done.

Sort of poignant with Tony R putting together the VMC CDS eh?

I remember rushing out to find a copy of "I found a Goodie" when heard Mike Raven give it it's first and probably only spin on it's UK Bell 45 release.

I also remember sometime later being in Soul City & Dave Godin asked me what artists I liked as it was proving tough to get some money out of me. I saw

the Chris Bartley LP and said that I actually had his "I found A Goodie" and loved it. Well, that was it because Dave told me it was one of his favourite

LP's so i coughed up £3 (a third of my take home pay each week!) and took it home smuggling it into my parents house in case they asked how much i'd

spent.

I was a confirmed Van McCoy & Chris Bartley fan from then on and my favourites are nearly everything he recorded..A & B sides but one track that always

blows me away from the LP is "My Baby" .

Another thing that stuck in my mind about Chris was the story that he had put aside his career at one stage to nurse his Mother when she became ill.

So, yes , it is Job well done & done with Soulfulness. RIP Chris

I always felt that Chris Bartley represented the vocalist that Van McCoy always wanted to be but could not quite achieve as Van decided to concentrate on his writing and production career ...

Also can anyone confirm whether Chris Bartley's vocals appear on any of the tracks on Van McCoy's Dancin LP ?

This is part of the same pic as used on the LP CB facing Kendra Spotswood (Sandi Sheldon). I was very lucky to have them both autograph my copy of the Chris Bartley LP next to their pics..

Another true legend passed on, they are dropping so quickly now. RIP.

I agree, just dug out my 'Sweetest thing' and then followed it with 'you get next to my heart' which is sheer quality. Then the flip 'For You' which is beautiful mid tempo too. One of the masters of that genre without a doubt.thumbsup.gif

Yeah always sad when the Soul world loses one of its sons/daughters. Just want to add i always thought Chris Bartley was also a vocalist for the Ray Alexander Techniques( and seeing as the album was recorded in Harlem and Chris Bartley was born there...etc.....Can anyone confirm???) and their rare LP 'Let's Talk on Lu JUn Productions, a must have album for any discerning 70's/Crossover vinyl collector, with such gems as 'Save Me' and ,Taking The Long Way Home. Chris's funeral is tomorrow. What a tragedy, it was great he got to perform in New Jersey in

2006. I understand some of the guys will be singing (Bobby Shivers, Eller Weas, Ray Block etc.)

Great pic Chris.....and Elouise looking like a doll too! Great stuff. Great talents.

The pride of place is this baby, getting him and Sandi Sheldon together to sign it for me was a real

knockout. An orginal publicity poster from October 1967. It takes pride of place in my collection.

after the funeral, you know how tight that lot all are, the New Jersey sixties soul set.

Chris did release an album on Vando and there was that 70s SS International release where it was purported he'd

done a couple of tracks.

Nice job by Pam and Charlie Chris, thanks for posting.

As an aside I have a tape of Norman Donegan singing "Think Of Me" that we recorded with Bev and Dave F in NJ. Great afternoon.
