What is the story behind this. I've always understood that it isn't Dena Warnes and that it's a Simon Soussan production?

Thats correct , he did several different new vocals to Northern classics at the time , Double Cookin' , Rhino , My Little Girl etc ...Best,Eddie

Be interesting to know the singers actual name on the 'Dena Barnes' 45, at least then I can credit her on a Detroit CD I put together.

Hi Eddie how you doing, sure I've got a copy of These heartaches somewhere but probably 25 years or so since I last played it. are you saying that it's an alternative vocal to a well known track ?

What is the original then as i didn't realise it at the time?

cheers mate

:)

No offence taken, and no it wasn't a joke :(

I heard this version banged out week after week at the local youth club over 30 years ago and at the time hadn't heard the DB track. For that reason it was the vocals i associated with the backing music - and still prefer it to this day. Incidently, it was played at a bournemouth event last year by Butch ('the dark one', as he calls himself) and it packed the floor

I have to confess I had forgotten all about it. Though on second thoughts (after giving it a listen) my mind must have blocked it out like some kind of amnesia realted to trauma - it's that bad isn't it?

With reference to the Kadoo strings "Crying over you" that some one posted the scan of, the flip "Nothing but love" (also issued as John Rhys) definitely belongs in the thread about dated instrumentals, though I remember having the red Impact Kaddo strings copy, and being so pleased when I finally got it. Strange how things change eh?

best,

RB

Mike yes it's so often the case that the one you hear first is the one that you go with & of course 30 odd years ago I certainly listened, enjoyed & bought loads of stuff that I wouldn't give the time of day to now & there are others that though I wouldn't want to hear out I may occasionaly stick on indoors but that vocal is truly dreadful IMO.

30 years ago muriel day packed the floor....doesn't mean anything thumbsup.gif ('cept people, including meohmy.gifblush.gifblush.gif needed to clean their ears out)

Jessica played it on the Saturday afternoon session at Cleethorpes.

Great tune, and ad me to the ones who prefer it to Duke Browner. Just like its quirkiness.

Maybe its the Yate influence in my formative years.

So do we know the real singer behind this?

I always loved the record, still do, I think I got mine from wigan about 76/77, and still got it, I would love to play it out, but wouldn't coz it's a boot (or is it?)

yes its a boot but according to the 'rules', as there is no other copy of it, it is ok to play out - but not ok to play the B side

Dena Barnes---These Heartaches -was done at the time as a complete Piss take --as S.S. hAD fallen out with virtually everyone,he said this -out of tune, flat, load of bollocks would be acceptd,i remember when i first heard it about 1977(???) with Rod Shard and we both said "No way will people ,accept that sort of shite!!"----they didn,t --and thats why it disappeared up its own arse----i can,t believe peoplle are discussing it in 2009---Get a life---as for the identity of the singer--who cares??

I don't remember that really Tony but as usual judging from this thread I was wrong!! That may have been the night though where we agreed that the bags with beer towel look was a real breakthrough in style innovation.

No one is inferring it is an unissued Detroit thing? It is a Simon jobbie. Was it recorded underwater? I am a technical muppet but is there any way that the vocal was speeded up at the time. Could it be Duke or was it a real if terrible singer. I know he speeded Epitome up at the time as Moses Smith but that was both backing and vocal wasn't it. Although vocal didn't sound "odd"; from memory anyway.

God has spoken, end of thread

now all those that did like it can stop liking it now - and we shall all stop wearing clothes when certain individuals decide that we should stop wearing them!!!

good grief, and you have the nerve to tell others to get a life

Just a pointless exercise imo.

On par with Ruth Swann, Jezebels et al.

Awful screeching vocals which should never grace a turntable again.

Deffo a pime candidate for Room 101.

Was it called " There is a heart " ? There was the vocal to " Rhino " - " Dreaming up a world of fantasy " and the vocal to " My Little Girl " - " My Sugar Baby " - Shirlie Matthews [ that wasn't bad as far as I remember ] , and the vocal to " Double Cookin ' " .I remember getting a list from Simon at the time 76- 77 ? Still got it somewhere ......Best,Eddie

If Shirlie Matthews is a S.S thing why is it on the old Inferno L.P 'Mirwood the sound of swingin Hollywood' (Burn 1 - 1984) then? In the sleeve notes it boasts that Sherlie (yes, spelt with an e) is a Mirwood mainstay.

Maybe thats a kosher track then , I do know it appeared at the same time as the other tracks so was roped in with them , can anyone confirm ? Best,Eddie

Eddie, it was 76.

" My Suger Baby" was quite good, and the "Double Cookin" vocal was Del-Satins "Baby, you're the fire" or a title something like that.

I remember it being played at the time, and I'm quite disturbed and ashamed to say I thought it was ok..shhh.gif ...but discotrons had that effect..tongue.gif

..30 years on though, it's bloody awful.........it's obviously been speeded up, which might explain why it sounds so bad.....there could be a half decent voice in there at the right speed.....anyone care to pitch it down to see if she can really sing....g.gif

Edited by Wrongcrowd

regarding the above recording - this track is out of a box that are all knackered in sound over the years (can't seem to bring myself to throw them out)- it might be better if someone with a more playable copy had a go whistling.gif

Posted (edited)

It is Pattie Brooks on "These Heartaches" (somewhat speeded up tho) - She is the singer on loads of Simon Sousan's legal and illegal stuff including "Shirley Matthews", "Del Satins" "Tartans" "Charades" "The Rubys" etc.....plus official stuff by The Sharonettes. Arpeggio, Romance, etc

She was an established LA backing singer working under the name Adrienne Williams and is credited on lots of 70s west coast produced disco stuff. I think the "Del Satins" vocal to "strings a go go" (double cookin') says features "Adrienne Williams" too.
