Do You Have An Old Photo From Your Days At The Casino (Or Depending How Old You Are From The 60S, 70S Or 80S)

Recommended Posts

Here are a couple of photos taken in Mr. M's around 1981. Not very good quality I'm afraid as the condensation played havoc with the lens. These two and another four like them are the only photos I have of this period of my life, bit sad really.

Got a feeling that may be the back of my head in that 1st photo - we used to sit in the second alcove in as you came through the door from the main room

Nice one Mr C, glad to see not only one who has lost the svelte figure, if only a little in your case!

Yes one of the many quiet Saturdays then, we were probably in the far corner huddling against cold, as it was about then we started going regular.

Hope you are well

Hi Jocko - hope you're well mate. Here's the bad news.....my svelte figure is coming back yes.giflaugh.gif

Just after I first met you at "The College Of Knowledge" wasn't it Steve?

Yes it was mate - the train journey in itself was a nightmare. A couple of soulies got on at Crewe who knew Dickie Bird and decided they didn't like the carriage we were sitting in. Needless to say there wasn't much left of it by the time we got to Wigan. Should have gone with someone more sensible..like you whistling.gifwhistling.gif

we used to wear made to measure Italian-style suits with bum-freezer jackets-often pin-stripped.When the later style went to longer jackets single/double 12-14 inch vents were introduced to help dancing moves. I've spent hours on dancefloors waiting for mine to help me but they don't want to know - as you'll see at the next Ad-Lib night in Lincoln.(5th Dec-sorry about the blatent plug).I'll be the one standing -still in the middle of the dancefloor with my suit on -that doesn't work !I'll try and dig some more photos out but in the 6ts venues i went to relied on a professional photographer doing the rounds and giving you a ticket to see the proofs in his shop a week later.

Hi Neil

That's a blast from the past. Andy Berry is from Parbold near to were I use to live. Janice is from Leigh from what I remember. I sat with her once at Wigan Northern Western on the way to Morecambe Pier Allnighter, she was pregnant at the time but it never put her off dancing. Drove past Andy Berry a couple of months ago, he was outside the pub on his mobile!!!

Here are a couple; first one taken outside the Casino (pretty typical photo actually) shortly before it shut and the other I took of a few folk from Norwich at St Ives circa 76. I have some more which I'll dig out some time over the weekend.

I think this is around 74.

My hair was naturally dark brown but after an accident trying

to have streaks in, I decided to have it bleached blonde. :hatsoff2:

It was Sunday afternoon at Wigan Rugby Club after the allnighter.

Russ's Triumph Herald and trailer are in the background.

Anyone who remembers going to the Rugby club and dancing will remember

the custom of the local-yokels was to throw coins at you...pricks!

Here you go. A few more from St Ives circa 1976.

Top left is Keith Dunhill who was dancing behind Billy Whizz in the This England film (he has a white shirt, black tie & baggy jeans on). The photo under that one is Cheryl Bush who was in the year below me at School - always a well dressed young lady. The photo to the right of that is Keith again dancing with Mal Rose in front with the beige bags. Can't remember the name of the guy in the last photo (he wasn't one of our crowd) but what a dancer he was - a shuffler extraordinaire......

wow I'd forgotten how that place looked inside. over 30 yrs since i set foot in the St Ivo recreation centre !! . i could only dream (around 76/77) as my peers went along to those niters at that time. the Rice brothers, Paul Sadot, Kev Doughty etc etc were just a tad older than me and were goin places. Late 78 i first went there. thumbed a lift and managed to get a lift back in someones car. one of my fave venues ever, i loved it there. good.gif

My first all nighter was Peterborough Wirrina followed very closely by St Ives back in the summer of 76 (they alternated week about I think). I preferred it to the Wirrina as the dance floor was slightly bigger although couldn't get my head around the Theatre which was pitch black save for the DJ lamp over the decks (although I now know why quite a few people liked it like that if you catch my drift).

My mate Danny and I had a motto "Chubby Checker for Prime Minister" - our fave tune was of course You Just Don't Know (in my top 30 on here).

yes Mick, the 'theatre' or oldies room... i can see it now, pitch dark, gym equipment?? , just light from the DJ corner. i always thought the light was from a door into an adjecent room (long time ago). that room used to be heavin with grantham folk. wonderful place

The main room was the first place i heard things like the burning bush, the ellingtons, billy watkins, billy prophet etc. they may have been played at other venues, but St Ives is the place i heard em first

Ten To One - Lou Roberts & The Marks

By Yourself - JD Martin

That's Not Love - Holly St James

Salt & Pepper - Esko Affair

Tough Girl - Billy Arnell

Stranger In My Arms - Lynn Randell

Playing Hide & Seek - Eddie Regan

can i jump in with a quick q to the photo posters

would a category in the gallery for old venue photos be a worthwhile addition ?

with a category anyone can add photos to it unlike the members album

do have a new category up there now

called members categories -third down

could have a past events one with sub cats for all the past events

stafford, wigan, and so on in there ?

let us know thoughts and if looks like people will use it will set up

thanks

searched my computer and photo albums, sad to say I don't have much from that era but I did come across this. I'm taking the picture but I remember this as clear as day.

Taken in 1979, we had just come out from an all nighter at the Palais into a bank holiday Monday morning. We didn't really want to go home so we just spent the morning dossing around the back of Broadmarsh Bus Station.

So I give to you Sharon Dring (my girl of the time), Jackie Sirsee, Mark "Jarvo" Jarvis and the late but loved Colin "Shippo" Shipstone. There's also a fella from Newark but I can't for the life of me remember is name. He used to hang around with another fella from Newark called Andy Cannon who I went to Wigan with. Wonder where he is now??
