ImberBoy Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Underrated, underplayed or just underwhelmed? What are your tracks? Can we take a track on its own merit now days and just hold it up to the ear without and connection to the dance floor or to any hype? I think we can and I think now days is the first time we do this as a scene, prior to this was a reactive ear after the dance floor had approved or disapproved it? For example, Drisabone played cold for the first time on ear phones doesn't quite have the impact as hearing it with a few hundred people going mad for it at a nighter and can we now hear the out played oldies and appreciate them as musical works without their former divvy label or without the Casino clutter? I have just heard Seventh Wonder Captain Of My Ship cold and it is a very underrated track, my opinion of course but can we now listen without the baggage and if so what holds up and what surprises you now days. There are loads of records that deserve a clean slate and some that should be turned into ash trays.
The Tempest Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Always been a big favourite of mine for the last 25 yrs , but so underplayed !!!! Cheap as chips as well !!!

paultp Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) I was thinking of doing a thread entitled "Records considered "played out" (i.e. overplayed) that you wish weren't" which seems similar to this thread. But unless my ears deceive me that is a truly awful tune. Just IMHO etc. edit; this is my opinion of a great record that has been flogged to death but I wish it hadn't been: pat and the blenders - just because - Edited October 10, 2009 by paultp

But unless my ears deceive me that is a truly awful tune. Just IMHO etc. Agreed !!!! Always remembers me of a terrible soul night I went to , 20 people tops , and this guy was completely pissed and danced to this record by spinning and losing control , flattening a girl going to the bog !!!!!!!!!
Guest posstot Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 A good chunk of my Collection is actually underated, underplayed or undervalued. I love digging a little deeper and could suggest quite a few for your interest. Only if captain of my ship is one of your choices....I could do with an ash-tray . Here's a few i would suggest; driving old school "northern" soul. double sided driving dancers. (i have a apare of this one with knackered labels but decent vinyl!! Seems to be picking up interest this one. But for the "don't leave me behind" side.(infact had an inquiry about it this morning). the "my last love" side for me is the superior side. Not taking anything away from t'other as this is a superb slab of double sided vinyl. Watch it's interest and value increase over the next few months!! Mike

Guest REVILOT Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 You make a good point Simon. Their are so many records that fall into the "Underplayed goodies" section Why do records become "underplayed"? I guess the main reasons are 1 Underplayed because - they are thought by many DJs to be too "common" 2 Underplayed because - not many DJs have them. and of course 3 Underplayed because they are ash tray fodder as you mention 4 Underplayed because they have been overplayed:thumbup:
Stubbsy Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Underrated and underplayed - Betty Swann "Lonely Love" - on Money 129. Great record. Cheap as well!

Epic Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Tis been getting lots of plays down south, but northerners wouldnt know that, would they Agreed !!!! Us Northerners no nowt !!! Believe Lou Edwards had a couple of spins thirty odd years ago in the area where the M6 has cobblestones. My underplayed (& always has been) tune is "Somebody I Know"- Wales Wallace. I suspect had this record been rare it would be a true collectors trophy piece.

Miss Wasperella Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Personally I think the Masqueraders "How" is brilliant and definately underplayed - it sounds slow but the beat is defo a shuffler (well for me anyway) just love it so for all you DJ's please play it

purist Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Whhat about BILLY KENNEDY - THIS GROOVY GENERATION - THELMA Personally I love all the Thelma stuff, but this gets lots of plays just about everywhere, and the flip. Funny isn't it that a lot of the Detroit stuff found back in the early years is played at, and deemed acceptable at, both Oldies events and Rare Soul ones. hmm...
Guest miff Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 This has got to be one of the most underated 45s out there Just pure class Freddie Hughes - I Gotta Keep My Bluff In - Wand - I guess its just to common for the big boys to play and so cheep

Ian Parker Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Run For cover - The Dells actually if i hear that once more i'll strangle someone..... Anyway, when it comes to 'oldies' there is one which i would love to hear played (i will spin it on my next outing behind the decks)..... CANDI STATON - 'Upper Hand' also : The Deadbeats - no second chance (a top late casino spin via Richard) Todays People - S.O.S (for dancers only) The Outsiders - Lonely Man (Palais monster) Little Lisa - Hang on Bill (very girly but massive once)
Jimmy A Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 I've always wondered why Lou Edwards - Talking 'Bout Poor Folks has not had a second lease of life - it sounds so much better for today's scene than it did in the 70's I use to play this alot Kev a few years ago..but like alot of tunes on the local Notts scene it was considered shite

Mark B Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Is that Patrick Vierra on the stairs!! has had spins but was probably more on the modern scene and gets the odd spin at crossover type venues. mark
Miss Wasperella Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Another good track underplayed "You don't Mean it" Twanda Barnes
Dylan Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Jimmy Braswell "this time its got to be for real" jar val marcus daniel "my best years" plaza both underplayed and underappreciated also the joe tex "all the heaven a man realy needs" recently changed hands on here for a fiver. Must now be worth its 15 mins of time in the spotlight and the inevitable silly prices
