believe isabell resides in the netherlands ,but one must be tolerant of these foreiners who know nothing about, forum etiquet and the hierarchy of comment on herethumbsup.gif

Brilliant wit! talent like yours is so hard to find nowadays...good luck int pubs n clubs!thumbsup.gif

As for IZZY, Netherlands! Well, im going to take her opinion on the scene HERE very seriously then. laugh.gif I guess she must visit here a lot...loving the music SO much and all? So what events have you been to Isabel?

Forgive me if i dont take your opinion about a film purporting to be dealing with a socio/historical period in UK soul scene history too seroiusly. Were you living in the UK then, were you on the scene at all, to be able to give ANY INFORMED opinion on the subject? Enlighten us please?

Or do you just talk in wishy washy IPSO CRAPTO vagueries by saying its just a film?

I actually think you are quite arrogant Isabel to presume to comment on the film at all...you have no reference to compare its accuracy and content to....You dont even contribute your presence to the country or music scene the film portrays...what a joker...

I dont comment on films portraying the Netherlands, because i know f--k all about it...a bit like you and this film. Enjoy your arm chair music.

does this mean we have to desist from mentioning the north/south divide as wellrolleyes.gif

The fact that Joey & Izzy dont seem to have history BUT a lot to say, points to dodgyness...sorry, but its happened on here before. Also, my point about me commenting on the accuracy of a film about the Netherlands and vice versa for IZZY is very rellevant.

I dont log on to a Rockabilly site from out of nowhere with no contribution to their long established scene and make forthright comments about the accuracy of a film that says it portrays their history and music!? Saying whats right and wrong. WHY, because i have no knowlegde or experience to judge it by.

Whether you like, dislike, agree or disagree with what i say about the film, i have a right to comment on its portrayal of a ,music and club scene and period i was a part of.....FULL STOP.

Joey...whoever he is, insinuates im a liar..who is Joey? In fact Isabal , can you just turn round in your office and tap him on the shoulder. Remind him to reply...thanksthumbsup.gif

oh dont lets get started on this.

is that an off the shelf non italian mudflap on that lambretta with the plastic holdallwhistling.gif

Attention to detail and integrity.....whats the problem with that????. Well it would be an off the shelf non italian mudflap because the picture was taken in 76 and these are northern scooterboys from York who did go to Wigan Casino. You could have had a few of these in the film........but that is research... a dirty word??It shows you care and want to represent the time it was made and not throw something together willy nilly. So it doesnt matter if Adolf Hitler is wearing a digital watch in a film, that the Titanic is actually a tug in Hull.I would have thought most filmakers care about their work and want to present it as best they could especially with a historic film (which is what this film is ie set in the seventies). The first thing you see is the cover of this DVD and it's a modern produced cheap bag.How hard was it to source an original????It shows from the outset that the dirty word care was not used.Still no answer if they are wearing those holdalls in the film. There is no excuse for bad research with the worldwide internet at the fingertips. This may be the tip of the iceberg,Im waiting for them to attend the northern soul wedding in Frank Wilson watches and cufflinks.

"It's just a film"

"It's only a game"

This thread has touched on some quite complex issues; there is real passion and a guarding of the Northernsoul scene by some who see this film as an intrusive look at a slice of people's lives who have dedicated part of their souls.

I don't think it's an easy brush off to say "It's just a film" unless you are in a position to not be effected by any adverse message the film may project.

To not comment on a film before its release, or should I say, to ask not to comment on a film before its release, asks for a too bigger leap of faith for some one none of us know or trust?

We should never underestimate the angst most will be feeling knowing that we have all ready had the chicken adverts and the Lambrini and it does seam that every time we are visited by the gliterazzi that we are plundered with little to no respect or sensitivity.

"It's just a film"

To some its just a film and always will be but to some, and I dare say most within this forum group it may be the writing of history and the problem with that is we don't know who's pencil case is being used!

No one wants or needs a documentary and it will be great to see a true blue feature on the Northernsoul scene but people are far too quick to swallow without tasting what ever is served up by the media and with that in mind a lot of people are worried.

The Europeans to not share our culture, we have a complex and deeply diverse youth culture that I believe is unique to us and the states?

Yes we get the European copyists but this does not originate from social, geographical and economical roots such as ours.

Northernsoul is not just about listening to a record and an explanation of the passion and how this part of black Americana has become part of our DNA, Northernsoul has become part of our very make up and for some it defines who we are, who we aspire to be and it is the theme music to many of us that represents a journey through life.

And it that passion that none of us want to see diminish due to a mercenary.

For f--ks sake, what part of i have read the script and seen the trailer do YOU not understand.

I know your obviously a bit dim..BUT you see film trailers are an industry standard (an industry i AM involved in) to get people to see a film...its meant to excite you into seeing it.

So, whether you like it or not Joey the lip, i made my decision based on the crap trailer. It made me not want to see it.

NOW..If you want to call me a liar and suggest i lie about stuff on here, you need to be careful mate and step up to the plate, or just quieten yourself. Better still say it to me when im out...best Paul yes.gif

My dear Paul...

I understand it's possible you have read the script, and I understand that you have seen the trailer - that's not what I was commenting on. You missed the point Paul - to clarify...

You said the script originally had nothing to do with Northern Soul and the makers just jumped on the bandwaggon - I was pointing out that this is just not true.

It is either a mistake, or invented, or a lie.

It's an open forum so no-one can stop you ranting that you think the film is a piece of crap, but it's unfair to sway people's opinions by telling untruths about the film.

And, just because some people are waiting to see the film before they pass judgement on it, it doesn't mean they work for Ipso whatever...

We are actually discussing a film that on its outset, purported to be a story set around Wigan casino and the Northern Soul scene (a socio/historical setting). You dont expect to see a film about Cromwell with the guys wearing 2nd world war helmets?? So the setting and accuracy, once you decide to SELL IT based on that, has to live up to its promise.

....But people are arguing about the type of "holdall" and whether it was authentic "Casinowear" f.f.s. We're not talking about centuries of innacuracy here (Cromwellian helmets), especially as there was such an eclectic bunch of people from all over the UK that went to Wigan.

I tell you what we should get the film makers to recreate The Casino at Elstree so it's a full lifesize working replica. Will the budget permit it?

Then we just need to find a slimmed down version of Russ to play the DJ.

For your information, sir, I never planned to post on here - I've been here for learning purposes. Until I felt addressed as an outsider a few pages back....... I have as much a voice as you lot, and right to a voice, and I gently addressed the issue. In no way have I pretended or assumed I know anything about Wigan's history or the Soul scene or whatever. It's been a very lively discussion in here and I am not arrogant. I would have been if I had meddled with the deeper details. Read my post where I start by saying, "I don't mean to meddle in this discussion as such", and I explained why I felt like posting. Nothing more than that. We do live in a democracy, don't we.

I have always kept my respectful distance in here.

As I posted earlier,I'm not commenting on the film ........................I can't until I've seen it.It probably will look a bit cheesy, because there was a lot about Wigan that was cheesy..........I may be wrong.

Are you saying you have nothing to do with this film in any way then?

Bloody hell had a few PM's telling me to have a look at this, need to digest it properly, but can't believe some of the people of the live and let live type opinion, I suspect Paul's personality on here means people want to have a dig at him just for the sake of it, but he raises some interesting points that, as usual, no-one answers.

I'll say same as I said at start, I don't expect a documentary, that would be a mistake, but I see no reason to accept sub-standard research and characterisation just because its about Northern, I really struggle with so many people saying who cares, its better than nothing, anyone remember the play on TV towards end of Wigan, was that better than nothing, I totally agree that this should be judged on its merits as a film and not as a documentary of the Northern scene, however that doesn't mean any old shit is acceptable, it should have standards of integrity and care that any period piece has. I want a great film that makes me proud of what I was part of not embarrassed, and that goes for any film about anything I care about, its almost a f**cking crime on here to care these days.

And as for everyone being nice about Isabel, she is the one saying its only a film, lots of people care too much about Northern scene to be bastardised so why should they just accept that opinion, if you are going to put opinions up here surely you should be expected to justify them, rather than say lets wait when that opinion is challenged.

At end of day lots of people have spent lots of years and lots of energy on the Northern scene, off course they are going to care, if people don't care why bother getting involved, the least we deserve is respect and artistic integrity from the film makers, if they don't care about their product why should anyone who is interested in the scene care?

So far some of the schoolboy errors on clip and the fact their people are refusing to debate some of the points made, does not bore well. Lots of my points could be answered by some dialogue which seems to have closed down as soon as the negative opinions appeared.

I suppose you lot thought Escape to Victory was acceptable because it had some famous people and was about football......

I'm sure the Oakland Chapter of the Hells Angels would have had something to say if the cast of Hells Angels were riding Jap bikes and wearing leather jackets with studs and BSA on them.Sonny Barger had an active input on the Hells Angels films so they didn't get it wrong. They also have Hells Angels trademarked.Who has Wigan Casino and northern soul trademarked then??? .I'm not asking the producers to recreate the Casino at Elstree (there's plenty of venues similar) but things like clothing, cars, magazines, badges, records, language, hair, furniture can be got right at little expense. If you can't get the bags that were used right and you stick it on the front of your poster/DVD cover what hope is there?. Who are they asking? What is wrong with attention to detail? If the producers are reading the threads who were their advisors on these matters??? Wheres our Sonny Barger?

As i said, the original script had NOTHING to do with Northern soul its only mention to any music was a bit about a Kim Weston record (not even one off the scene) and JOEY, people on here have known me a long time and one thing im NOT KNOWN FOR, is holding back on the truth. My history and exitence on the scene are not in question. You, however seem to know f--k all and appear to be an IPSO Crapto mole!! Not a very articulate or good one either!

SO Joey, you seem to know a lot about this script?? Where you from again, where can we see you out this weekend. Really IPSO guys, you are so see through and Joey , you are all bluff and no knowledge so stop the lip.laugh.gifAnd get back to producing dodgy films.

WINSTANLEYS book is so far off what Wigan was about, if the films based on it, its just confirmation that its a pile of cack!? If you knew anything you would read Winstanleys book and see how much is missing (no drug references for instance, no real grit.) and how superficial the script writers research was if thats his inspiration. The Winstanley book was written with a view of promoting a modern day clean cut image so that Russ can keep reviving it via a Wigan Borough Council who dont want to know the real truths! .hows that for authenticity Mr Ipso.

You're right, Russ's book was not great, he seems to have forgotten some of the basic facts, not only about certain records, plus the way he lords it over Richard is embarassing. Dave Shaw's book is about the best concerning the casino.

Read back on the thread and ill think youll find that Joey no lips started the personal stuff by suggesting people on here thought i was a liar...with no evidence i might add. Also, this guy STILL Has not explained WHO HE IS and why hes so informed about the original script...hes a mole.

He needs to introduce himself and tell us how he can comment on a script i have seen, but he admits he hasn't? Or is he basing his comments on a you tube interview? In which case its second hand, uninformed commentary..You have to stop letting outside commercial interests coming on here and promoting their shallow wares.

CHECK Joeys profile...top ever sound KIM WESTON ...no title just that. And thats ALL that was in original script that i read...a Kim Weston track in a record shop scene.. NO OTHER TUNES WERE IN IT.

Also he watches Blue Juice clips, obviously to compare how his film lines up to it.

This guy is SHIMY MARCUS (Craptos writer)i think or another IPSO insider...he should state who he is and who he knows or take him off...NO intro go home!yes.gif

If you read my post you'll see I was talking generally, I wasn't aiming it at anybody in particular as there are plenty of people on this thread disrespecting other members.

Please can we get back to the subject of the film itself unless everybody is fed up discussing it now and I'll close it.

I think Paul has rightfully laid down a gauntlet which has yet to be picked up or even addressed - IMHO this thread should therefore stay open until it has..whistling.gif

CLOSE IT REG....there are two IPSO FACTO promotion moles on here. yes.gif

IZZY has gone all "CUM BY AR" folky insulted on us...after she insinuated people had closed minds on here. She will NOT be insulted, so best close it...her and Joeys articulation are an insult to anyonelaugh.gifLook forward to her supporting the scene in person, like a lot of other Europeans do, rather than via her arm chair. Be a better contribution than reporting people every 2 minutes cos they dont agree with her. I NEVER report people because i have nothing to hide and am prepared to attempt a response myself.

CLOSE IT...it only advertises a dead horse of a film....PEACE!wink.gif

As I have said on this thread before I saw the film in its preview format in early 2009. I will do my best to answer any specific questions you have about it - anything to get your blood pressure down a notch or two. Albeit I didn't go with the intention of remembering/nitpicking about every small detail.

There was a fairly mixed crowd at the preview I was at and I can assure you nobody walked out in disgust.

There was guy near me who pulled out a wadge of photos from HIS Wigan days. We ended up having a discussion with one of the Ipso Facto guys at the end. He didn't seem to have any major gripes.

Having said that I thought the overall feel was a bit low-budget but that sort of suited the time in which it was set. It wasn't a major work of art or a deeply religious experience but if I had paid an entrance fee to watch it I wouldn't have been demanding my money back.

All in all I pretty much enjoyed it.

To avoid any thought of conspiracy theories am attaching a scan of my Catacombs membership card so you can see that my involverment in and love of rare/northern soul dates back long before Wigan.

Maximum respect for your passion but don't let it turn into vitriole.:D

Wow, MBARRETT, sounds like a law firm. Just because Joey wont declare (as house rules state he should) who he is and IZZY wants to report anyone that doesnt agree with her, dont mistake my questions for vitriole. I could say your complacency and a statement about some random guy with a few Wigan pictures is dispassionate and flacid! ....each to his own.

Joey already said he saw an interview (with himself:laugh: ) where the writer said he was inspired by Winstanleys book...which MOST on the scene know, is WAY OUT and very innacurate..and was done to keep promoting Wigan as a money making enterprise! so that says it all....Shimy has admitted his source of reference...

LOW BUDGET...jeez thats an understatement. But cost doesnt equal the products success or failure..integrity and knowledge do...two traits that have been lacking all the way through this film. From conception to completion..a membership card means f--k all to me im afraid.
