any body got any info when the souled out film is being relased i was an extra in it i no its changed its name to a northern soul film but still no relase date any info

Filming and editing is finished. They are in post production at present. Has been a delay - 6 months - on permissions for the music etc.

Depending on distributor reaction, film should be on general release the early part of next year.

The last thing I heard was that post-production is almost complete and music clearance should be finished this month.

Things might start to move pretty quickly now.

Films aren't really my thing, and I'm gonna sound a bit thick here, is this a pukka film that's going to be shown at my local Canon multiscreen , or a flick that's for Art House consumption only, or something I see for a £1 in Tesco's DVD racks. As I said, films aren't my speciality, but I took a look at their website, and hadn't heard of any of their output (which means nothing, I'm afraid) , though "School For Seduction" sounds as if it has artistic merit. Is their other stuff any good??

Their previous output is in the vein of student type films Des. Wouldnt like to comment, but have a feeling that this wont be a big multiplex number. somewhere between art house and dvd i think....unsure.gif Fact they withdrew Youtube footage doesnt show a lot of confidence in their own product.

Hello Des,

I assume they'll have screenings for potential distributors to see if there's enough mainstream interest for a national cinema release.

These days most films (such as Clubbed, for example) get a limited cinema release which may be extended regionally or nationally if box office receipts and reviews are strong.

But they usually end up on DVD within months. And I understand there will be a soundtrack album too.

Its not hard to source an original Adidas bag is it???. This is one of those tat ones that you can buy in any high street shop.They should have got the team who made the seventies cop series on the case with Phil Glenister in it...might be a laugh watching it for continuity errors.Im presuming its set in the Wigan area.Will be funny if he's carrying that bag.John Inman last used one in the Are you being served film when they went abroad...and Im sure hello honky tonks would have used it as well.

Don't really want to knock this before seeing it, if I see it that is. On the strength of the trailor I ain't gonna make any special trips to see it.

Except the actual footage I can't relate to any of that apart from the authentic looking alarm clock scene and the kicking in the bogs.

Summat too plastic about it, just like the bag

Let's just say, it ends up another Quadrophenia,Like with the Mod Revival from the 70's through to today. Loads of young Lads and Lasses embrace the Music like we all did, even try and dress "Northern" and become the next Ace of there scene cause he's/she's got such and such on Whatever records, and they're all lovin the Dances, the friends the stories the nighter Buzz for the first time, hunting the vinyl, Dare say it as they do now anyway, the recreational pharmicuticals and the makings of a man/woman this scene can be...

The majority of us, i would speculate, haven't seen more than a handful of fights throughout all the years of attending venues...and witnessed a lot more friendships built on shared passions.....rather than dressing in black and tellin everybody to FUCK OFF, WHAT YOU LOOKIN AT....I'm hard me I'll Knife ya!

Bring it on, may it be absolutely enjoyable, or a bit of plastic nostalgia...I hope it brings our youth back together again and give them a focus....Rather than them have to go and rob one...(A ford focus love....come on tune in)

Then, also my records will still have value in twenty yearswicked.gif

Carlton Tavern , Morecambe , late 80's - first time I ever saw a gun ! it was shoved in somebodys face in the bog over an unpaid debt , walked in on middle of it and hastily f ++d off ! - and yes I am being serious , Having joined the army later on in life I always wondered if it had been real one, but lets say it had the desired effect on the recipient ! Fook it I'm looking forward to it...ok it's not the scene I attended for last 30 years ("oh yeh did I mention the chicks"...can't say i ever remember going to an allnighter for a shag ever!) but then again me dancing and searching through record boxes for 8 hours wouldn't make a film would it?

Has to be about characters people can relate to etc.....personally I WILL be going down the local odean to watch it and/or buy it on DVD!

If it gets a new generation into the scene then thank god it was made!

Don't get me wrong, I'm only pulling your chain about the "victor" Tag. Yes if the scene were to be that more commercial, because of the film. I understand your view. Yet to love something, and watch it die, because you want to keep it to yourself....rather than share it is a bit selfless. I am not an original Northern souly....My first allnighter was the Parr Hall in 85....Don't mean i love it any less.

If it brings in a few, rather than the generation revolution i hyperthitically put out there...then goodoh......

LOOK PEOPLE, ITS A FILM, NOT A BIOPIC OR ROCUMENTRY...bear in mind its a first and where films are concerned, there is always artistic license so...if some of the scenes are reminiscent of quad...so be it REMEMBER THIS....QUAD WAS THE CATALYST FOR A WHOLE YOUTH GENERATION WHO WERE LOOKING FOR A DIRECTION THAT WAS MORE SUBTLE AND COOL, UNLIKE THE RIOTOUS, UNRESTRAINED ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT STANCE OF PUNK. as a result modernism is very much an integral feature within the northern scene...it certainly didnt alienate society.

unlike what happened in the 70's where naivety allow the press to exploit us, this film will make a statement that will remind the rest of the world that we didnt go away quietly and infact this film is created to remind the rest of the world that 35 years ago that northen soul had taken its place as the instrument of how to dance to and enjoy REAL MUSIC without having to fear you were foolishly following a fad.

when it is released, its highly likely it will be arthouse fodder....WHATS WRONG WITH THAT....from where i stand thats where most intelectually minded film lovers go to see productions that defy the norm and are generally the one's that dont make a big noise at the globes, bafta's, oscar's etc....that dosnt mean there's anything wrong with them and infact i would say this is the middle ground that is appreciated by most film critics....remember this as well....STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN graduated from there and look at the plaudits that has recieved over the years, granted it was a documentary.

THAT FILM WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME....we'll just have to view this film in a more light-hearted manner and enjoy it because it is a portrayal of what life was like for us back then....OR HAVE YOU ALL FORGOTTEN YOU'VE GROWN UP??.

ANYWAY,....non of us are paid up film critics and these producers can only be guided by what they have witnessed now and, like us they can only watch the same film clips that we have done for the last 33 years to give them the background they require for what they are about to put in front of us.

NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER....and if its at a film house or on dvd, watch it from start to finish and forget your inhibitions for a while.....

the producers were (rightly) severly taken to task by the members of soul source about the credibility of the final product . soooo if this film is a success and any good then its the members on here who should be credited and thanked for making sure they got it right innocent.gif

This film will highlight the scene which will bring an influx of new people listing to it which can be all bad

you will get those who will stay and others who will go back to the charts and Rap and so on after all were not all gonna live for ever

this could bring in new blood to the scene which in some cases could be what it needs

Well I was one.

In Birmingham they did the showing in the Central Library Theatre and the first I knew about it was when I saw a flyer in the Library.

Anyone could just walk in - I think there were about 50 people or a bit more - and the age range was late teens thru to mid-50's.

Sorry to upset those who have written off the film before they have seen it - but I quite enjoyed it. It is not a piece of high art. It's a film about a bunch of kids in the 1970's - about relationships - about teenage angst - and very importantly about a special kind of music.

There were no free glasses of wine - trust me. The only freebie was a biro - if you knicked the one they gave people to fill in the appraisal form.

I am as guilty as the next man when it comes to issues about the comercialisation of "our" scene but when you look at it in the cold light of day the northern scene isnt that comercially viable otherwise it would have been huge , the fact is that most people dont like it that much . The film will just be a flash in the pan and wont interest most folk so I aint going to worry about it .

Yep, they did one in Manchester too..............but since then it's gone back for a lot of re-working.

I think the general concensus was that it was a bit wet storyline wise and could do with a bit more grit. Hopefully the finished article will have this. Remains to be seen.

The sound track is pretty well put together and the songs fit the parts of the films they appear in from the test screening i saw. Everyone's entitled to their opinion of it, good or bad, and im looking forward to teh pages and pages of mud slinging that will follow on here ph34r.gif

Ok 1st post on here so getting ready for the flak but here goes...I enjoyed "Once upon a time" pure nostalgia but well done with a terrific soundtrack. This is different and hopefully will reach a different audience if only through Amazon and You tube. Lets give a chance and keep our egos under wraps.

sorry if i disagree....people haven't exactly set about de-constructing your stage production which, was highly successful and full credit to you( i presume im corresponding with mr. sadot?) what you did was put a culture firmly in the spotlight, on a stage where, it was shown to be totally acceptable. people looked at it as a PLAY an interestingly different slant on 70's life, focusing on a musical trend previously unrecognised by the outside world. what we have here, is a transition to celluloid of basically the same concept.

paul, no-one's falling over theirselves to say what you did is twee because you saw the moment was right to connect with the theatrical world using something that following generations had not previously encountered, as a result the northern soul culture has been viewed in a different light and it has not suffered from adverse commercial exploitation, something we may well have been justified to fear.

if the stage production is such an acceptable concept, then the fact a film portrayal has never previously been licensed, should prompt enough people to give it a chance at the box office...it could become a cult hit. WEVE NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH A FILM ( not documentary ), DEDICATED TO WHAT WE, THE BRITISH, CREATED. just that fact alone should make a person's hairs stand on the back of the neck.

as a playwright, your impartiality should be formost in your thoughts, these producers, whoever they are, are just trying to translate what THEY see....for all i know they could be 20 years younger than us and their parents may have been northern soul fans and as a result they wanted to voice their perspective on the scene.

theyve been out and experienced it , probably spending many hours pouring over film footage and travelling many miles to get what they want...we shouldnt rashly pull out the carving knives and slice up the dish before it has been served.

i like many, am just waiting to see it so ill reserve judgement and i suggest that in the case of everyone else, discretion is the better part of valour and as such, you should all do the same.

Some good points of interest Rob....

I think some of the comments come from people who have seen the film already, they did a little screening session last year some time... Quite a few adverse comments have come not only from some who have seen the film but were also involved in the film.... I think some of these comments have put others off before they have even seen it....

As you say, let the music play before we pass any real comment.... Not long now i guess...

Maybe the test screening was just that, maybe now they have changed some scenes???? i don't know, maybe some who were part of it can comment...

I am sure there will be a thread of epic proportions once the films released, some will love it, some will hate it and some will be sat on the fence, just like many other topics on this forum...
