Where has Billy Paul gone? :rolleyes:whistling.gif

Was Cleethorpes in the heyday that good?

Yes,

John Pugh from Wolverhampton owns it. And before anyone says it doesn't, I've heard it played, seen it, and held it. So has Chris Anderton amongst others

It's an unreleased Motown recording that was apparently recorded when someone went to Motown for an audition. When you hear the vocal you'll understand why he wasn't successful

Hmm...known instrumental plus weak vocal plus no known sound files circulating - is there any further documentary evidence that it's genuine '60s Motown?

After the Quadrumvirate of Van'Dhal (Soul Brothers from Outer Space) incident, one can't help asking oneself, can one....

I gather you mean Pier / Winter Gardens 1975/1976 ?

Yes it was in my opinion the best niter in the country at the time, the quality and diversity of music, the friendliness of the people made it "THE" niter for me...

What more do you need other than my word ? I've nothing to gain by saying I've heard it, seen it, held it. Nor has Ted Massey. Nor has John Pugh.

He's also had it years, but refuses to tape it for anyone because it is a genuine 'one-off', and as soon as he put's it on tape, it will eventually mysteriously appear somewhere else.

Having said that, I've got it on tape from when he DJ'ed at the 100 Club, 'live' so to speak, so there are 'sound files around'. It's just that you haven't got one !

I'm surprised motown wasted a disc to cut the acetate, tis really bad  How he got through motowns doors let alone into the studio is beyond me

I've been pondering this one at odd times for years and my feeling regarding 6 by 6 is that the tune was obviously arranged and intended to be an instrumental. Motown habitually used brass to punctuate vocal lines. In 6 by 6 the brass often takes the lead melody and it's very unlikely that any kind of vocal would "sit" nicely in it. Simply put, it just doesn't sound like a backing track.

I'm not disputing that the Wolverhampton disc exists, but it might have a funny whiff about it. Just my two Euros.

Well yes, if you'd actually read my post properly, you'd realise that 6 X 6 was recorded by Motown as an instrumental. The vocal is by someone who went into Motown for an audition and sang a vocal over the instrumental. And you're right, the vocal doesn't it nicely over it. Which is proberbly the reason it remained unreleased.

Russ Winstanley in the 70ts tried to have a vocal recorded for the Casino Classics label, but he claims at the time,Motown put an injuction against the song, therefore it was never put out. Are you talking about the lengendary vocal rumored to be around in the Torch era? Or is this one the more recently found unreleased Motown recordings?

Are you talking about Me and Mrs Jones Billy Paul ? Or the Dena Barnes Billy Paul?

Which Cleethorpes, Pier allnighter or Weekender?

Have ideas about the other two but not sure 100% right.

If I recall, the Torch era rumour even came with an artist name; Tony Turner rings a bell. Can anyone else remember?

For playing "Cats eyes" possibly? If so then it was probably me, but John it was only a water pistol.:unsure:

If it's a real story then tell us the full story rather than these snippets man!

The Donna Summer record??? Goodness - when John Manship told me in the 70's this got "spins", I thought he was winding me up when I heard it. So JV played that one as well? I'm no longer quite so surprised he was "threatened" then....probably an early incarnation of the soul police.......maybe some of these 70's 'icons' should keep their powder dry :D:D

Wasn't it supposed to be Tony Turner on Musicor. Just a minute, isn't there a Tony Turner on Soiul Source?

That's right - Tony Turner on Musicor. Mind you, at the same time there was also supposed to be an instrumental of Can't get enough, by the Monk Higgins Band on St. Lawrence. Now that would have been a treat!

I think some of these rumours started through michevious "wants lists".

yep, tony turner was the named artist for the vocal, levine spent a lot of time in america looking for this. Definitely told me back stage at wigan in 74 that he still believed it existed..................

Didn't Cats Eyes get spins at The Wheel?

It wasn't recorded until about 1974 so don't believe so. It is one heck of a dreadful record, and an embarrasing low point on the scene,.,. whistling.gif

You're right, of course! I'm confused now. The Wheel spin I'm think of may have been something with a similar group name or title. There were a lot of quirky instrumentals back then - well that's my excuse!

Dreadful record, but I think all the records have to be seen in context of the times they were played. It must have sounded right to some ears at the time.

hey your on the ball. Actually when you discuss records and the period they were played in you must ALWAYS appreciate the relevance of that record at that time.

Donna Summer was only played a couple of times at Sams allnighter and was very tongue in cheek mainly because of the phone intro like Tony and Tyrone.
