Please lend your support to Radcliffe Civic Hall and The Longfield Suite. The Council proposals are to scrap these venues and sell off Ramsbottom Civic Hall. I'll post more details up once I've got this underway but more than I've ever wanted help or support at any venue, I really really hope you can spare a minute sign the petition - above link.

Email me or pm me for more details.

All the great traditional venues' are dying off, there were many comments at the NCSC Manchester niter at Radcliffe Civic that the venue was perfect and like the old middleton civic - please help do what we can to stop this venue going in the same direction.

Hi Jayne,

I've signed, Bury council :wanker: never cease to amaze me, tories or labour.

Phil

Hiya,

Thanks Phil - much appreciated.

I know, tories this time. This tory council are planning so many cuts, it's untrue!, but doesn't matter which party they are. Plans are to sell off Rammy Civic & to have 'Friends of Ramsbottom Civic' running it, coverting Radcliffe Civic Hall so Adult services and the Library move in there and having no plans for a suite at all within the redevelopment of Prestwich village. (2 Tesco's and more and more shops but no venue to do anything other than flippin' shop!).

Saw it in The Bury Times on Friday,

Crazy and madness do not even start my thoughts on this,

All that money being spent in Bury at the moment,On the new shopping centre,When the town centre is half empty and the only shops left open are charity shops,

Need to speak to Bury mbc, about the Radcliffe renewal scheme, and why close a perfectly good venue,Its only been open for about 30 years if the truth be known

A Disgrace

If you need local support on this issue please PM me

Live in Bury

Got to keep Radcliffe civic open

If you are on Facebook I've just opened a page called "Save Radcliffe civic hall"

Go and say your bit if you have any photo's old or new post them up and say your bit

Grant

Cheers Grant - you're a star!. Just found it on facebook.

I'm working on the petitions and I spoke to one of the managers last night (Sam Williams) and Sam did say that everyone should email the civic if they have concerns and the civic will pass the emails on to the chief exec.

All petitions are via email at the mo so I'm going to go to the civic this week and take some good old fashioned pens and paper in so the older folks who go indoor bowling can sign them too.

Done my bit Jayne.

You should make sure Sam Williams doesn't let the venue "Slip through his fingers" tumbleweed3.gif

Sorry I know this is serious but I couldn't resist.

Thank you so much for signing folks thumbup.gif - really appreciated.. still need a few more.

Duh...Pete / Ged - I can't believe i didn't spot the Sam Williams thing!... rolleyes.gif .... I hope SHE won't let the venue slip through HER fingers either... (biggrin.gif )...

Got a good response from the MP today, he's done petitions already so I can just print them off, I guess now's a good time if you want help from these MP's.

If anyone can take petitions to venue's with them, I can mail them across and I'll have them with me whilst out and about at weekend too. I think the final decision is made on or aroudn 12/14th October. sad.gif

Just seen your post Jayne and signed the petition.

Places such as civic halls are important and should be kept open as they cater to the needs of a range of local people, particuarly pensioners. Important to soulies too as they are often the ideal venue.

Keep up yor fight Jayne.

I would like to say that this news shocked me but it hasn't an indication of many local councils today were they take, take, take yet give very little back.

I suppose Civic venues are a dying breed and perhaps something of the past, community spirit is less and less important as time passes by, perhaps the proposed closure of these halls is an idicement of that. Personally I disagree but hey what does my opinion count.

I've recently moved over here but have been attending gigs at Prestwich and Radcliffe for a number of years, both are fantastic venues for all types of events and have been an integral part of these communities. They are litterally at the heart of both Prestwich and Radcliffe, Radcliffe is an area lacking in any kind of investment and apart from a new health facility the town centre is in a sorry state if the civic hall was to shut as well it would be the death knell for the town.

Another element not considered here is the potential loss of jobs, only around 30 full time staff are employed across the halls which seemingly is a drop in the ocean for the council but that is only due to the fact that casual and part time members of staff haven't been countered into it. Many of which rely on the regular work from these halls as an important part of their monthly wages.

Thanks very much Drew, you are completely right,

I've contacted every group I know who use the civic hall this week and I'm glad to say they had approached this with the same attitude as me and already had petitions going around. They have indoor bowling, 3 nights a week for 6 months a year and these people aren't able to travel elsewhere, Elizabethan Suite would be the nearest venue and the main room isn't big enough to accomodate the indoor bowling mats. That's only one example.

oooh, I'm ranting and it's not even 8am..

Cheers m'dears!.

Just been down tonight and as they're staff, the civic management aren't allowed to support the petition! how mad is that - not being allowed to fight for your job. There are of course petitions in the venue and someone stood at the door with them, only the casual staff are able to be involved though... our managers didn't stop us..

We're doing alright but we've only got until 14th to get the petition in before the decision is made. KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED for us!

This is happening all over the country I'm afraid. Then they'll be saying there's no community spirit, and the kids have nothing to do, and nowhere to go.

I presume it's supposed to be about saving money, or is it that the land is valuable?

I once enquired about hiring my local community centre. The caretaker nearly passed out when I said that I wanted to run after 10pm. Also the rules and regulations that were required were ludicrous, and all costs were per hour. How people manage to run events in these places, if their councils are anything like mine is beyond me. No wonder they lose money.

I wish you well with your crusade.

Phil.

Cheers Phil,

Nah, the land isn't valuable, they'll use the building for adult services / library (which we've already got) but not run it as a venue anymore, job losses to all of us. :-(

I know what you're saying, if they marketed the venue's properly, they'd easily pay for themselves.
