no idea on who played first and where etc jason but rarity means its doubtful its been played that much unless someone can tell me otherwise g.gif from the equally rare album by her on the maple label i reckon the 45 in decent nick fetches around £150/200, maybe more unsure.gif hard uptempo gritty soul, definitely agree with that, some would even call it funk whistling.gif

Worth mentioning that this is of course Towanda Barnes of "You Don't Mean It" fame. The 45 is pretty rare but such is demand for the "Uptown" album on Maple that the single should be cheaper if you can find one. I would say that the horns definitely take this into funk territory. A tremendous record all round.

I played it on the Deepfunk radio shows Wrighty and I used to do. Must have been 5 years ago now? Must have been known before that, although not amongst the funk collectors at the time if I remember rightly?

Cool record.

Hi Jason, I first heard this on the LP which I had over 20 years ago, but the track never registered with me then as "You Don't Mean It" was the tune at the time. Fast forward to about a couple of years back and I saw the 45 on Ebay with a soundclip. It blew me away and I bid on it but lost out, I think to Wrighty. I managed to get a copy not too long after but I don't think I've seen any others for sale in all this time, and I would say it's probably harder than the LP. I heard it and loved it and thought it would work on the soul scene, so I play it out and it always gets people asking me what it is. Is it soul or funk or R&B, who gives a toss, it's hard, fast, dirty and exciting.

What an excellent track - thanks for sharing it......

Oh - not that it matters but I think it's funk (well gritty funk at that).

Crikey that is good! Like others, I bought it for "You don't mean it" and though I played the rest of it at the time nothing else particularly stood out. Presumably because head was in a 'northern place' at that time.

I have a copy of the album but sadly I have never had the sleeve for it, any guesses on what it might fetch? The vinyl is in good nick.

best,

RB
