No Recent Northern Discovery Would Have Cut It At Wc

Slight drift from the thread, Has Edwin's version of I can't escape your memory been played anywhere? I think this would have been huge at Station Road, and should be huge now. Sorry I can't put a clip up. It is on the Involved LP.

Sorry Brian, but in my humble opinion, not in the same league as the Four Tops version mate. thumbsup.gif

Phil.

Hi Phil,

As a fellow Burnley lad in our usual East Lancs tradition, I must disagree with you!

I think the Tops version is great, but Edwins is tighter and has more of a Northern feel. Up the Clarets!

Ok Steve just seen this, Ok im naughty boy on here thats my handle for other reasonswhistling not because i got one, but yes IMHO and in Kevs it appears IT would have been massive way back in those days i agree pure gritty northern thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

Now Steve youve known me years I like it all from way back then to present day included in that modern also. There as been some fantastic stuff been found since those WC days .. A lot of the stuff found in recent years is good but imho it does not cut the mustard as far as a great dance record ( But i like to dance not just listen depending where i go)but cuts it as a rare soul gem. On the otherhand there is some right crap getting a play but ill leave that one alone "CLOTH EARS EMOTICON NEEDED HERE"whistling .

Rob

Hi, Rob, I agree it would have been massive. Just doesn't do it for me at all.thumbsup.gif

Never went to the Casino but surely Butch's Martha Jean Love c/up Old Time Lover and his Just Brothers c/up Go On And Laugh would have done the business?

go on and laugh was played wasnt it.

John Vincent and Richard Searling both owned the record while the Casino was open, but I don't know if it was actually played. Searling is rumoured to have offloaded the disc claiming it was "too good" for the NS scene of the time.

Three quality choices John, Edwin Starr in particular would have stormed the gaff, as it is very traditional, but what a sound..........thanks for posting mate.

John Vincent told me that he offered it to Richard S and it was turned down with the "too good for the northern scene" comment you mention. Not sure if it was after Wigan closed or at the tail end when offered to Richard. Great record!!

Hi Russ,

As the original DJ there along with Russ W, I can assure you none of the above would have worked.

There's a handful that would have done the business..Joe Jama and Bill Bush spring to mind, but the receptive audience had so much to choose from and, don't forget the playlist

was short. We might only play 100 records a night due to 2,3 and 4 plays a night.

Wigan was unique in it's make-up. Today we are older, wiser and willing to accept different styles.

If the Seven Souls and Silhouettes failed to entice at Station Rd, I can assure you the Mello Souls would have failed.

In my humblest opinion of course!

Kev

Seen to reall you and me having this discussion before Kev. Still think the Mello Souls would have made it, maybe not in 1973/74 but towards the end ('79/'80) if RS had got hold of this I still think it would have gone down taken the roof off :g:

Two more from Butch that I thnk would have gone down well, Shirley Turner (Ann Robinson) World of Happiness and Jesse James Love Is Alright. Diane Lewis - Ain't Got A Chance Too. All in my opinion of course.

little jewel i want to. dorothy berry im not satisfied irma thomas what are you trying to do?maybe.

Little Jewel was know back than by collecters and dj's but wasn't really pushed in the bigger clubs.

Too cheap at the time to be played out, you could pick it up for a £1 or so.

Same with Carol Anderson Taking my mind../I'm not worried, alot turned up in soul-packs back than.thumbsup.gif

Great thread Russ, with some equally valued and respected input, and whilst individually many of the titles suggested are mouthwatering in their own right, rewind 35 years or so, and the mind boggles .Appreciating the playlists back then contained both good and some bad on the ear tuneage.....IMHO a "fly on the wall" back in time session would be the best way to gauge such rightful "debate" ...... best wilxy thumbsup.gif

  • 3 weeks later...

After a comment on a Look Back thread today, i thought the remark might be interesting as a thread on its own 'the new stuff thats around just don't cut it....would'nt have then and does not now...'. Now instead of this turning into a sh*t slinging contest, how about records from the last 10 years that could prove this remark wrong I'll start:

Mello Souls

Tommy & the Derbys

Roy Roberts (Sugar)

Sheepherders

Johnny Praye

There are loads n loads more including almost all 100 Club 45's. So c'mon lets post up the monsters from the last decade that would have also taken the roof off the WC.

Russ

ok my favourite subject the trouble with people on the scene today is many dont travel further than their own doorstep .and tend to have cloth ears nothing new there having travelled the length and breath of this country for thirty plus years supporting any d.j .s with that bit of balls to play new sounds like gilly and the hand full of others at the back end of the casino searling was great along with sam , pat brady and gary rushbrooke, in the 80,s it was firstly mr,s darge ,hennigan,mr crosdall in london jim wensoria

etc the last decade and a half has belonged to butch ,andy dyson mick.h .kitch etc trouble is these records dont get heard due to to many venues each week anyway i reckon thgese would have rocked any golden era venue

MELBA MOORE " MAGIC TOUCH " MAXINE BROWN " TORTURE " TIARRAS " SUPRISE " APPOINTMENTS " I SAW YOU THERE " THE TEMPTONES "YOU KNOW YOURE IN LOVE " NEW WANDERERS " RENDER MY SERVICE " JEAN CARTER " I WANNA KNOW " DIANE LEWIS " YOU AINT GOT A CHANCE " MIGHT LOVERS " EVERYONES SAYING " CALVIN GRAYSON " LOVES JUST BEGUN " GIGI & CHARMAINES "DONT WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE " THE CARPETS JUST CANT WIN "MAC STATEN & NOMADS " THERE SHE GOES " THE PRIMERS " HOW DOES IT GRAB YOU " . plus a endless list of other top quality sounds that would put many of over played sounds to rest given the chance.
