When younger I loved the NS instrumentals,

Just got a load of Instr tracks and listening to them again,They sound so old fashioned!!

Condition Red sounds like some bloke on an organ in a workingmens club

Astral Trip just like a soundtrack to some B-movie sci-fi film

Loads more

What do you lot think??

Yes I know there are some brill Instr tracks,Just a point of view

Was chewing the fat with Mr.Hennigan yesterday and a few instrumentalsreached the decks during the session...including Total Eclipse - Sixo'clock and Sam Ambrose - they'll be coming.

Both from certain eras and both popular for various reasons he told me.The former is a huge production pop-tastic mover that could've gracedany late 60's early 70's TV drama...Guy said it was the breaks in thetrack that made it and it needed a large venue (WC) to put it into fulleffect. WOuld it work today...possibly at Stoke (large venue)? I thenplayed him Jimmy Bowen's ' The golden eagle' and Peter HamiltonGeneration 'Hey girl' as they are in the same bag. The Sam Ambrose I'vealways had a soft spot for...especially the vocal side, which wasn'tfeatured back in the day, as instrumentals ruled the dancefloor at thatpoint. Oddly enough the vocal version (on the flip) sounds like itwould've fitted in perfectly during that era...was it not played at all?

We both agreed that some instrumentals are simply good pieces of music, regardless of the musical genre, and if they had the beat then theywere fair game! I also confess to liking 'Condition red'.

Shades Of Brass - " Windy "

Mirwood Strings - " The Mix Up "

Ebony Jam - " Ride On "

Valatone Band - " Something Good In Everything Bad "

Patrick Bradley - " Just One More Chance "

Johnny Pearson - " Rat Catchers "

Wouldn't surprise me at all grant, but GuyH reckoned not. The vocal is sooooooo that era though!!

He also added that it was IanD aka Frank's biggest spin for a while, but that the cover up name he had for it was woefully 'incorrect' in that it didn't match the sound...any takers for guessing what it was?!

Just a thought about instr tracks

"Strings a go go" OR " Double Cookin" What do you remember it as

Strings for me

Grant

There were quite a few " Go - Go " cover ups , one of the most notable being " Jerkin' At The Go - Go " - Al De Lory . which was of course , " Right On " by the same chap .

Never really got "Cochise" Or should I say never really liked it,I still bought it though,But then again as a 15 yr old I bought everything "Northern" I could,Maybe just trying to keep up with the "Jones's" Or trying not to lose face with my mates who had also got them

Bari Track still does it for me after 30 odd years. So does Makin' up time (thanks Hippo!). Even though I'm not into oldies all that much these days.

Harry Betts " Straight Ahead "

Chiffons Band " Sweet Talking Guy "

Mr Bloe " Land Of a 1000 Dances "

Libre " Apollo 11 "

Doc & The Echoes " Why Wonder "

Al DeLory " Moon Racers "

Harry Betts " Straight Ahead " - i love this - haunting inst...

Chiffons Band " Sweet Talking Guy " - one of russ's on offs...

Mr Bloe " Land Of a 1000 Dances " - classic early wigan!!

Libre " Apollo 11 " - took me years to find this ,,,c/u as mystic moods

Al DeLory " Moon Racers " - Defo not for today but always have a soft spot for this.

Definitely played Dave. Have a tape with it on from Wigan. But the inst was played ten times more.

Strange you put the Jimmy Bowen in with Peter hamilton, chalk and cheese there, think the Peter Hamilton is way up there with the top insts.

The best insts of all time have to be

Exus Trek

Bari Track

Frantic Escape

The Champion

Cigarette Ashes

one of the worst is Tough Girl

Don't get me wrong...not for brilliance...just the fact that it is also a big string section production and along with the Total Eclipse it kinda worked.

Besides, there was nothing on TV at the time!

I still love "Ooh Pretty Lady" by Al Kent and "All Turned On" by Bob Wilson.

Not to forget "Festival Time", "Double Cookin", "Bari Track", "Detroit City Soul (Focused On You)" etc.

And the instrumental of "Gone With The Wind Is My Love" of course.

I even liked those Mirwood instrumentals that Soussan issued... "I'm Satisfied With You", "Same Old Thing" etc.

Posted

....another favourite is "Don't Leave Me" (Instr) by Holland & Dozier on Invictus.

No matter how much I love the vocals, I still enjoy the backing tracks.

Posted

How rare is that....think I've only ever seen one for sale.

Very very rare - I got 4 off the same guy off ebay and put Mark F onto him as well, apart from the ones that guy had, I don't think there have been any more on ebay. Managed to hold on to one of my copies for myself.

Hiya, mate,it's your favourite stalker/immitator...l also loved some of the Soussan stuff,'Pretention','Shoot The Duck'etc

Yes they are brilliant - especially the inst of Don't Pretend and Temptation Walk

Posted

Didn't know there was one!

Hello Pete,

Yes, the recent Kent single has the long vocal version with an instrumental on the flip.

The instrumental version retains the backing vocals. It really shows off Jack Eskew's orchestration.

Send an email to info@millbrand.com and I'll send you an MP3.

By the way, 'Gone With The Wind Is My Love' was recently licensed to Nokia for an internet advert. It's probably already out there somewhere.

Back in the day, the instrumentals ruled OK, but today you dont hear much 'new/modern' pure instrumentals.

Its always great to hear any tune that youve not heard in years, especially if it meant something, instrumentals included.

At Cleethorpes WG you could hear Strut in time, Love music, Right on, and loads of other instrumentals every dayer and nighter and they were popular.

There was a shift in the early 80s to bring back the soul into the scene as an integral part of Northern Soul, and so the instrumentals were pushed away.

Nevertheless Little Queenie/The Champion/The trip and ilk are still much loved.

Hold on help is on the way, was always my fave, just gets the toes tapping.

Absolutely! Loved `Ton of Dynamite` since I first heard it at Blackpool Mecca & it still sends the shivers up the back of my neck. Not many instrumentals do it for me these days really, especially some of the afore mentioned Mecca disco type sounds. Although at the time I watched those perfectly poised, elegant, dancers, shuffle around the dance-floor to some of those now very dated sounds. I stood at the edge of the dance-floor with my gob open :P I never did managed to look like them, I'm far too common.

Wow......was the seller's name.... Bob? What an opening to a record it has with a fantastic beat...made for dancing to. How much did you sell them for Pete?
