Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 (edited) Just tried to post this but it disappeared. I'll have another go and hope it doesn't duplicate. As usual our mystery person is an artist who has had at least one tune played on the Northern Soul scene but not really a soul singer. I'll take questions to which I can answer 'yes' or 'no' - and will provide more clues as we go along. All depends on people joining in but judging by previous weeks there are loads of good sports on here. Last week we had Curtis Lee whose tune still (rightfully) gets played. This time it's one from the dark days when anything with the right beat was acceptable... who is the guy singing here? Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 First clue. Although his Northern tune came out on an indie label in the US it was released on a much bigger label in Japan. Actually that's not a very good clue but it is early...

Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Billy Arnell Tough Girl Nope. To be fair, when our guy started off he was in a band. Not a soul band though, as Webby will tell you. In fact there was another band with the same name and they weren't a soul band either! Confused - we ain't even started yet..

Pete Eccles Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Nobody bothered to ask Pete Definitely US. I even know roughly where he's from. Has he had any notable commercial success?
Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Give us another clue what club or era ?,.wheel, torch, mecca or wigan, staffs etc.only 1 n/s hit bobby jason. That's loads of questions and they're not yes/no ones! I'll try though: No, No, No, Yes, No, Yes, Definitely not. Can't say I'm not fair...
Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Wild guess, and it's probably a poor one at that, but can't really focus much, god l must get some sleep before wed's. Jerry Naylor !!!!!! I think we've had Jerry almost every every week
Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Has he had any notable commercial success? Well no, or rather he had quite a bit of local success but I don't think a great deal of national. People in his band went on to do a relatively successful version of his Northern song though, then a later version of that group recorded an all time classic and one of my favourite tunes when it got covered by an unrelated white British artist. And she has some Northern tunes too, but focussing on that may lead you astray

Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Godz just reading that lead me astray Sorry. Mind you I have finished the wine and if I open another it's not looking good for being fresh on Monday morning
Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Just so you don't have to look at previous page: and a more recent pic as proof that he's still on the go

Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Keith, innit?!! This Keith? Bit later when our feller's tune got played
Guest isis Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 This other group with the same name, was it a girl group
Godzilla Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 (edited) johnny rivers or joe south Not as well known as either in the pop world. His Northern tune was (briefly) bigger than anything by any of them though. In fact I think Russ actually played the later version which was connected to his early band by writer and producer. Connected to another guess we've had too... Edited September 27, 2009 by Godzilla
