For research purposes - how much on records and how much on gear?

Posted

Total 110% - must have been a good 65% eh?

If I hadn't have embarked on that fateful first night at the Casino back in 79 I could (say - WOULD brother) have been a Milkman in Haydock by now.

Gutted.

Is that all you tight git lol on a serious note though I really have no idea, records thousands, cost me jobs, relationships although Jacqui my wife is a diamond and has put up with so much nonsense from me over the years it's a wonder we are still together, bank statements have been my downfall over the years and credit card bills often record related which have caught me out so many times I've lost count, got better now as I'm less involved with the scene but I still play Mr Dodgy where records are concerned as it's something that never leaves you, I still try and con Jacqui that they all cost a fiver lol lastly although many of us must have spent hundreds of thousands on this journey over the years I feel it's been worth every penny and is something that you can't put a price on simply money well spent I reckon.

Thousands, it's frightening how much I've spent in the last 12 months let alone the last 30 years.

Everytime I buy another, I think that's the last onewhistling.gif and then I hear another quality tune and guess what, it starts all over againlaugh.gif

Kinell, mate it was a joke......quite sure that nobody on here does!! :D

I dread to think what it has cost me , in and over the 44 years I have been involved and associated with the club / NS scene .

Would I do it - and spend it - all again ?

Too bloody true I would thumbsup.gif

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It cost me my first leg-over EVER

Had to run for the last bus to Bolton to get the last one to Wigan

She was raring for it

Never mind though I got to Wigan just in time to be spat at by all those greasers coming out of the Casino after the rock bit they did

Grant (the very older than most virgin in 1976)

I've got to hold my (small-ish..) hands up to doing JUST THAT !!

Well.. since the late 90's I have - so you could say, the past TEN YEARS.. king.gif

Always been meticulous in 'databasing' & itemising any 'new arrivals' - and in even more detail during my Turntable Records list' days. I think it stemmed from NEVER having the type of memory required NOT to have to write things down. Proudly, STILL in possession of ALL my notebooks (and in better condition than the majority of me discs !!)

They actually make very interesting reading 20 or 30 plus years down the line.. Full of all sorts of facts and things that are absolutely USELESS unless you are.. One of us 'got it REEEEAL bad' Soulies rolleyes.gif

It rocks my boat and satisfies my 'need' for an accurate 'history' of my 'vinyl ventures'.

To the original question..

Well - If not consumed by vinyl mania I wouldn't have had to renege on the purchase of Nectar Island, for starters !! I'll let YOUR imaginations dictate how the rest of my 'No Records Allowed' world would've panned out ph34r.gif

I'm fortunate in that (although not since 2003) my wife is stupid about HER vinyl too !! Having an enviable (not large.. 150 to 175ish) collection of 45's herself. A couple of examples of her box contents being Betty Wilson (Dayco) at £280 cost (to me !!) 13 years ago, now. Bill Bush's 'I'm Waiting' - under a £100 - and BEFORE we were approached at Cleggy W'ender 2003 by an 'excited' Scottish Soulie.. As he eagerly spewed the sentence of 'Have a listen to this Cover Up' !! Which we duly did.. Looked at each other - my look saying 'that sounds very familiar' !?! Whilst my wife's look transformed immediately into spoken word.. Thus: 'Oh, Bill Bush is covered up' ??. The look on the lad's face (don't remember his name - probably better that I can't) whistling.gif with his next words being 'How do YOU know the title !??! 'And Artist' ??

I think HE thought he was being clever when (smirking..) he said 'Bet you don't know the label, though' !!

Didn't anybody ever tell him ?? about the relationship between 'Red Rags' and 'Bulls' ??.

Needless to say - he soon 'cowered' away (wishing he'd never bothered in the first place, no doubt - defo ruined HIS weekend ) laugh.gif as my wife, veeeery nonchalantly responded with. 'What ?? you mean Ronn' ?? - I got mine nearly THREE YEARS AGO !!

She favours 'CLASS'.. 'FEMALE' (NOT the girly, Ronettes type 'screeching' - more, well..) Betty Wilson / Liz Verdi / Marion Stewart / LaReine Lamaar type vocals (PLUS an original poster advertising the LL 45 upon it's release !! Hmph.. ).

She possesses that 'keen' an ear for a 'CLASS' tune. She invested in the likes of (and VERY early on.. still lots of peeps that don't even know it, even today) The Bootleggers 'Don't Count On Tomorrow'.

Why do you think I MARRIED her ?? yes.gif

The last time we went through her little 'gems' - EVERY one of her purchases had seen an increase in their value - a few, quite substantially - in comparison to (her) the initial outlay.

And talk about FUSSY !! - she MADE ME return her first copy of Liz Verdi's Columbia 45 'Think It Over..' because she heard TWO CLICKS... You think that's bad ?? The clicks were both on the RUN IN GROOVES ohmy.gifno.gifunsure.gifohmy.gif .. yes.gif

More recently she rejected my (low four figure cost, to me..) supposed 'SUPRISE' & 'GIFT' for her.. The last remaining 'outstanding' 45 from her original wants list. Because (she claimed) it sounded 'off-centre' in the early few bars of the discs intro.. So she would rather wait for a BETTER COPY !!!!! The only PLUS to her rejection being that I am now the proud owner of a Bad Weather Inc. 'I Never Never Knew'. good.gif At least ONE of us was happy smile.gif .

Anyway - I digress - she is 'aware' of the sorts of sums spent over the years but, ever since she clocked the £20K+ figure - for the FIRST quarter of that year.. she chooses to NOT want to know 'exact' amounts.

Yep, you're dead right - JUST AS WELL, too !! whistling.gif

(An EXTREEEEEEMLY poor - for MORE reasons than one..) Fingers ph34r.gif

I have no idea how much I have spent.

I sold my first collection between '78/'79.

Started my second in '80! Whatever I have spent was well worth it, but (there's always a but isn't there?) - on reflection I wish I had spent more of my money on travelling in the '74 - '78 period. When I think of the times I sat at home instead of travleing with mates because I had spent a weeks wages on a tune. And I never spent any money on gear because I couldn't have afforded both!

It turns out I got my most of the things in the first collection back for less than I had sold them for in the slump of the early 80's, as well as a lot of things I could only have dreamt of owning as a 'kid'. So it turns out records are replaceable, but the opportunity to go to WC and the Mecca wasn't....though we thought they would be there forever at the time.

So what i'm trying to say is, it isn't things, it's the memories that are the really valuable part of the soul scene.

best,

RB.

I have no idea how much I've spent; tand this is the odd bit; or if it's been worth it. There's times when I have absolutely no doubt and would do it all again. Then there's othertimes when I've spent money on records that I shouldn't have and I realise what a selfish t**t I am and at that moment its not worth it at all and I curse the addiction just as surely as Jekyl must have cursed Hyde.

from my youth club days to now , god knows

traipsin round second hand shops for suitable shoes, train tickets , entry fee , sodas and limes and refreshments, audio tapes , mp3 and discs for youtube, baccy but whats really killed my pig in this last year is the rate at wich bus fares have escalated from west yorks into lancashire and south yorkshire . AN ABSOLUTE SCANDAL . theyv gone up at least 70p and of course a day rover is no good for a nighter . oh well  . it was all worth it

What a silly question to ask!!! If I added up all the cash/jobs/friends/etc I've lost I think I would slash my wrists!!

But would I do it again?!?! F**k yes!! and I am still going, will never be a millionaire but I am rich as hell, if my experiences were cash!!!thumbup.gif

Call that a receipt?!! wicked.gif

I think that a far worse feeling than dwelling on the price (or physical act) that you've paid for a record, is that endless gnawing feeling when you have missed a record because at the time you thought it cost too much. Or even worse when you see it for sale, hesitate to think about it and when you go back to get it, it's gone!

I understand you completely Mr Parker. I have those moments myself.

Some of the bollox I've spent money on, you wouldn't believe (well, you probably would

actually) biggrin.gif. I'd rather not know what I've spent. Blowing fortunes on emergency outfits for alniters or weekenders that normally I wouldn't dream of buying, or getting carried away in auctions or making my mum drive me all the way up to blackpool to spend rediculous sums of money on a little 7' record to then give it away as a present..thumbsup.gif (many times over!)..all in the name of soul. why can't I be normal, spend £10 on cd's in the supermarket occasionally and have just been happy to buy people a simple box of celebrations for a fiver instead!.

sending a taxi to a record shop to bring me a record when I couldn't get out of work because they had one of my wants appear on that day's list, that got me some odd looks in the office and probably wasn't one of my smartest moments.
