What were the cicumstances surrounding The Casino being Voted "Best Disco In The World" by Billboard. Who voted for it. Even after the commercialisation in 75/76, surely it was still not that well known world wide. So how did it get the award?

By the way, Happy Birthday Wigan. My own 36th anniversary is in 7 weeks ish.

Right Paul, what I was told at the time, (noway of knowing if it is true).

When Russ claimed to have over 100,000 members, billboard give it one vote per member.

If anybody knows anything else please post.

Dave.

It's pretty well known that it knocked 54 into second place, but (if as DT says above it was defined by assuming the membership all voted for it) how could we possibly know either way? (apart from the odd person who might have been)...

And if we're talking best 'DISCO' I think that 54 would defo deserve the vote over some manky old dance hall that didn't even have a light show - but surely that's NOT the point of Wigan is it! (or any other crappy old ballroom in the north of england that only allowed some dodgy characters to put an allnighter on coz the venue needed the money)... Terming them 'discos' at all is to belittle the value of the music to us isn't it?

l've never met anyone who has actually seen that.....must be one of the best NS Urban Myths anywhere.. :) Who started it??

It was mentioned in Blues & Soul and possibly Black Echoes at the time,

I remember reading it,

The term Disco a shortened form of Discotheque was used a the time to describe a place used for dancing to recordings of music,Played by Dj's and not performed by live artistes

The term now relates I believe to be anything played at Wigan Casino,But only by people who never went to "The Best Disco In The World "

:)
