Some right characters on the coach - Mick from Kiddy, Val from Droitwich, Donald, Sam etc etc.

Got that coach several times, great fun, remember Mad Val only too well, unsure.gif , what a character - recall getting the train back from Brum one morning and getting paranoid about MickeyB's sister Mo sticking her head out of the carriage window going through those tunnels!

I used to print Soul Symbol for Iain when the boss was on his dinner break, at the Addressograph/Multigraph plant in Weybridge ,and had the odd piece "published" within.

Do you remember 'Scoops' record bin in Woking market ? That was another I.Stewart enterprise.

What was the mag called??And l was stationed in the army in Aldershot...Remember lan's coaches well..

.............and an all-nighter at Egham!! :D

I organised the Egham all -nighter with another mate.......small world.

Think Ians coaches ended afrer paying the driver Ken? in cash.......but he didn't pass the money on to the coach company.

I'm not sure the driver actually knew the way to Wigan, remember setting off down the M4 once or twice.

Also remember no heating on the coach in winter........ice on the inside of the windows.......nice!

Iain was certainly enterprising. I helped him with transport to & from the market. If he had done well I got paid in cash.....otherwise it was records.

He had a talent like nobody else I have ever met for finding records cheaply. Think he still does a bit of buying and selling, but hes not on the scene, but turned up at Bisley all-nighter a couple of years back with Jasmine, Mick Lloyd & Tracey.

Bloody ell theres a name from the deep dark past thumbsup.gif

Bootlace was one of the best - remember the time he took a fishing rod to Wigan to hold over the balcony! Remember sitting with the Stoke crowd in Roman Candle pub in Hanley cursing him for not being there - that was the night he died in a car crash. Think that was about 34 years ago!!!

Posted

DID'NT Bootlace run the Stoke Coach as he fitted myself and ChrissG on it at Blackpool Mecca going to Wigan? I'D BE SUPRISED IF BOOTLACE WAS RUNNING THE STOKE to MECCA - WIGAN COACH IN THE EARLY TO MID 70's ? MIGHT BE WRONG BUT BOOTLACE WAS ONLY 18 WHEN HE AS TRAGICALLY KILLED JN A CAR ACCIEDENT IN MAY 1975, LIKE I SAID I MIGHT BE WRONG.

Love the pictures thank you- he would have liked his memory to be kept alive for so long - massive character, massive personality GARY WATKINS NEVER FORGOTTEN

Cant remember who organised the coaches from Poole in Dorset (probably Nik Mak or Andy Golding) but when the interest started to die out it was Steve Carter who took the lead and got a 12 seater mini-bus organised for regular trips to the Casino.

Whether he was a 'big boy' or not i don't know - us southerners dont tend to get into them sort of games

Hey Mike

First guy to organise coaches in our area that I can remember was Besty (Mike Best) from Wareham who stopped in 78 and in 79 when the old guard seemed to move on I started the 12 Man mini buses from Poole station and found it harder and harder to fill them as more people lost interest until we ended up with Car and Train Trips in 1981.

Some of the folks from the later days apart from yourself where Pete Kitching, Dave Jackson, Karen Warne, Gary Samways, Smiler, Louisa, Harry, Andy Cole, Speedie, Andy Robinson, Gary Horsfall, Martin Adams and Herbie.

Cheers

hey steve, we had some cracks going up to wigan in that mini bus matethumbup.gif , we were dedicated though, poole to wigan!!, remember the night we had a seized wheel bearing?

mini bus driver asked us if we wanted to be picked up and brought home (from michaelwood services) or send an engineer to repair it. needless to say we voted for the repair and i think we got to wigan for 3 o'clock! at least we got in for free!

full credit must go to smiler though, he used to do the journey nearly every week in a plastic pigohmy.gif ! dorset to wigan in one of those in the 70's!ph34r.gif

Good memories of Jonathon's coaches from Nottingham - late Wigan Sat nights, pick up outside The Salutation, a few to The Fleet and a never to be forgotten expedition to a Yate Anniversary when the coach broke down on the way back well south of Brum - a stabbing on the coach and an epic journey to get home via public transport...

Yep l remember Jon running those coaches Robin. I ran 52 seaters from Skegness to Notts Palais dayers picking up in Boston and Grantham, also trips to Wigan '74-'78 picking up in Worksop/Sheffield - 12 seaters to Cleethorpes.

One trip to Wigan we had the side windows of the coach shot out by kids with air rifles on the M1 near Wakefield

made the trip there and back freezing one Jan/Feb trying to keep the cold out with bin liners taped to the window frames.

Some of the coaches used were so bad you could hear 'em coming before you could see 'em.

Some of the Skeggy regulars back then... Hoggy, Mick Smith, Pixie Mick, Gus, Mart Davis, Mac, Bogey, Russ Fenby, Mogul, Sharkey, Joey the Jewel. Boston lot ... Bluey, Bim, Vic, Mick Pheonix, Malc.. Worksop/Sheffield... Pete Shirley, Suzanne (now) Whitmore, Pete..

Great times just wish l had taken more photos of those days and trips........Anyone got any ??????

Went to Wigan in a purple, hand painted (I think) van driven by Ian Walker (Nottingham): His mate Phil Jones and I cant remember if Rob Smith was in it as well (He knocked about with those two at the time) my friend Janet and others who I can`t think of through the haze of time.

Went to Cleethorpes on a bus from outside Ilkeston Co op: Can`t remember who ran that either! Can anyone else `coz it was usually full..... (Think my Alzheimers is getting a grip)!

The Bedford coach was also run by Chris Blackburn for quite a few visits to the Casino, picking up all over the place.

The coach company was called R.Souls of Olney!! they dropped the R when they got fed up of the jokes!!

They also got the hump when the driver slept in late and left us all freezing in the snow so we had to break in to the coach to stop shivering.

What you had to go through in the olden days, no mobiles then!!

Yep remember that night, sweating like a bastard comin out in the morning, then freezjn ya balls off, That freezing morning soon brought you down. I came from Irchester but used to hang around with the Kettering/ Corby crew at that time frank vincatori, Brillo Bob Barr willie Hey etc etc we used to make our way to Northamton and pick up the Bedford coach. I remember the pill bottles rolling toward the front when the driver braked. Also Brillo and Sarah with wage packets full of the nites essentuals. What a brilliant time to be young and being as cool as f*** which we thought wwe were. Soul really enriched my life getting to know so many brill characters and it still does. Kimbo aka the fly!!

Nice one Kimbo, I would think we knew each other depending on the time line, as I gave up the coach for the luxury of Paul Shirley's ( rip) car and then scraped togeather the cash for my own MK1 Cortina complete with Starsky & Hutch stripe. What an embarresment!!

If I remember right, we used to pick up two great girls called angie & Heather from Worcester area and a great bunch of lads from Wales.

I also used to thumb it from Bedford with a mate called Jim Thomas also from Bedford. If we sold a few sounds we would get the bus to Nottingham and then Bedford via Northampton, but that must have been on a Saturday after a Friday niter or could have been after Samanthas. Not many cells left!!

Well back in the day i used to borrow a van(legaly) and meet everyone at a pub in Letchworth on a Friday night at 6.00,Mick Smith,Roger Stewart,Taffy,Diane plus a load more would pile in this shitty old van to get to Wigan on the Oldies all nighter.

But it was worth it...i think..oh happy days

I think I may have been in that van!.. I use to live in bedsit above the hairdressers on Ley's Avenue, with a guy called Charlie Frost ( wonder's where he is these days) and some others...

happy days indeed

boxing.gif The Bedford Coach was a good one to be on, and yes it was the SOUL BROTHERS coach, I remember Charlie Frost from Norwich while living in Letchworth organising a mini bus to Wigan, Taffy gave me a photo of the event, but it is so poor its not worth putting on, The thing I remember about that night I had a few wraps on me to sell? as soon as we parked up next to the Casino I can remember the Bedford coach across the road (see my photo) and Charlie got pulled by the Squad and frisked (charlie never took any Drugs) while I just walked by saying "constanoon aftable" The Bedford Coach, didn't Bootlace run the Stoke Coach as he fitted myself and ChrissG on it at Blackpool Mecca going to Wigan? thumbup.gif I think Ady C comments about traveling to all nighters in the early-mid 7ts is apt as we really payed our dues going up "t"northph34r.gif DAVE KIL

Just seen this thread, saw the list of names there - Mark Bicknell's phone no. for Reading coach. Ran a few myself about 1975 ish - didnt even have a phone then - picking up anywhere north of Reading, often had a 52 seater with 70 on it!!

Just caught up with this thread, prior to Chris Blackburn running the coach from Bedford myself and Danny used to run it, we often didn't have enough money to cover the cost and we would have to have a wipe around before the driver would go...we never generally had enough, the usual drop outs meant we were short but he'd go anyway because he'd generally have company for the night (if you not what I mean!!) caught the comment about Paul Shirley (RIP) can you PM me what happened/when? Went in his car many a time to nighters.....god knows how we got there half the time....really sad to hear he's gone....

I remember Jim and there have been a number of questions about Paul Shirley. Paul was one of my best mates, he got back in touch right out of the blue about 4/5 years ago. I know he made contact with Tony Warot and Andy Felts. Sadly Paul took his own life in 2007. Tony, Andy, Tony Hirst and myself went to the funeral in Gt Yarmouth. Very sad. As for the Wigan coaches the driver was called Brian and he used to look after our gear just in case. Are any of you posters from Bedford Paul Aisbit, I think thats the spelling. Anyhow see you guys soon. DJaying tomorrow for the Alan Pollard night here in Stockport. Getting right in the mood for some good sounds. Regards. Steve Foran.

The coach picked up in Bromsgrove then, Jethro started running the coaches afterwards, and started picking up in Redditch. Happy days.

Hello Ady

The late much respected Tony Connolly also ran buses from Newcastle to Wigan and wee Duncan Mcallister - I think there may have been 3 coaches at one time. It was coach wars for a while with buses being cancelled at the last minute by mysery callers. Great times and quite funny now when you look back. Coaches did take the fun out it a bit though - I missed the shady characters that used to hang out in Rowntrees Sounds in Manchester and the drug squad at the station dressed in bomber jackets carrying holdalls asking if you had any gear.

Cheers

Hardly hard core, but I drove an escort van with 6-8 of us in it from Hemel every fortnight, which was the pre curser to Jon Buck doing it properly in a coach. Then migrated to a mini bus (well a VW caravelle) with 12-14 in it. Also did trips to the Cats and the Howard Mallet on Friday's.

Being as young as we were then - Question - Did we really appreciate the 'scene' and the music we had then?

or did we just go along with it all, moving from one nighter to the next, enjoying it of course but did we realise how special it all was? Just a thought!

Cheers

I do believe the lads from b & S and/or Record corner did organise a coach up there, there's a photo in Mike Ritson's book.

Who where the big boys back in the day?

Who booked the coaches and organised the rabble?

I remember a coach outside the New York Pub at the top of Anlaby Road in Hull ready to take us off to Wigan Casino, we heard of this through the grape vine, never saw a flyer and it was way before most had telephones.

We kinda take these organised trips for granted but they where a real fabric of the Northernsoul Scene, I certainly couldn't afford the train fair and owning a car was for big boys.

Who organised the coach trip from Hull?

Who organised the trips from your end?

"I never ever thanked any for this, bit late now but ................. thank you"

We ''borrowed'' motors in Luton, till we had our own that is, to go to Stoke, Cats, Torch etc etc etc

These are definately the stories of the"true"northern scene  don´t let anybody kid you it was"just for the music mate" when you are in your teens and right off your trolley on assorted substances :shhh: anything goes!

Example :- Couple of skint young lads hanging around Gloucester(no names) but ikey comes to mind :D how we gonna get there then?-pinch a car,but what about the dayer? pinch another one then how do we get home? i know :shhh: someone from Gloucester sure to be there get a lift with them........................We did ha ha .................in a stolen motor!!!

Remember in the Frank Elson column when they said the Raven at Whitchurch was in danger of being stopped as the thefts of cars between Wolverhampton and Whitchurch had increased on Friday nights :D was there even a train service to Whitchurch? right out of the way place ,

don´t think the playstation generation would even be able to think of "other"ways to get to places nowadays,do people thumb lifts nowadays?(too dangerous?) more dangerous for the drivers in the seventies :excl: with some of the dodgy charachters holding out their thumbs

Sometimes the best fun was gettiing to and from the allnighters and dayers...........................as long as the nessessities had been organised  ........................Now thats a whole new chapter!!!

Swish wheres your book ? got the title yet?

THE NORTHERN SCENE::::::::::::::::::THE REAL DEAL :thumbup:
