Davenpete Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 (edited) I notice that the header ad strip for the new book has a quote from Pete Lyster (who is he BTW - Pete doesn't know him) saying that people were requesting record centres to be punched out to make UK CP and Stateside issues records look like US issues - Pete worked there through the early 70s (71 to 74 with RS) and says he NEVER came across this - obviously Ralph did have a press, but this was for the purposes of juke boxes. Interesting how legends like this are born, I once invented Bud Harper 'Wherever You Were' on Burgundy Vocallion only to be lectured by the guy I'd wound up about it a year later about how it definitely existed coz he'd seen one. Neil Rushton Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Pete Lyster is Pete Lyster, from Manchester originally and now lives in Somerset where he and Cathy promote the excellent "Soul Nights @ Bridgwater" A top top bloke and DJ and has one of the best Soul collections - British and USA - imaginable. He is not a liar or confused. The quote comes from pre 1971 - when he was a kid in Manchester, Pete used to catch a bus on a Saturday morning to Ralph's and stand in the shop for hours watching what was going on and that's when he saw the centres knocked out.He loves his British stuff so much the horror of it has never left him! Neil

Neil The name is not that familiar unless he's Pete the Fireman from Rochdale was it? Think he moved away from civilisation down to Midlands somewhere. But anyway I too used to go in Ralphs although spent most time in the Stockport branch. There were 45s on show in Manchester with one of those "locking bars" through the centres. There were UK records in there so obviously the centres had been knocked out. Who by no idea. ROD
mischief Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Nice bloke Pete.. awesome DJ.. always does the business for us down at Exeter.. and if you do want to hear how fine a dj he is, he is down at Exeter on the 31st of October.. (cheap cheap plug there)

Dave [/quo Contradictory statements , "Pete never saw it happen" but "it was done on some sort of pressing" ....................... ???? Anyhow the practice was quite widespread in those days, I remember butchering a uk polydor (solid centred) copy of The Amboy Dukes, trying to make it look like an import. Looked a right foookin mess, and never played right again when I'd finished ,good job it wasn't anything good !!!!
Quinvy Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 What the fook are you on about? What new book? Please can you make your posts coherent then maybe we would know what you were on about. Very confused of Barnoldswick.

Mike E Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Pete, Runs one of the better Soul nights in the South West, together with the delightful Cathy. He is a resident DJ at my All nighter that I recently set up in Gloucester. A true supporter of the scene and a nice bloke to go with it. I agree with the positive posts above from Torchboy and Mischief in particular. Mike

ROD Rod You're on about Pete Thorp who moved down to Gloucster area i think? And not Pete Lyster. A bit confused about some of the other posts though? Is this the Pete Lyster appreciation society? What's this book got to do with Pete being a nice guy? I dare say he is, heard nothing to the contrary. Wouldn't dispute it. So what appears to be the problem? Nobody's attacking him? So why's everybody defending him? Confused????
Guest lifeandsoul Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 i'm sorry but i still have no clue what book this thread is about. I've waited for the banners to turn around, refreshed repeatedly and still not seen an ad about a book!

Funky 4 Corners Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Between '69 and '72 I spend rather too much time in Ralph's, at that time he wasn't in the shop that much and left it to Zan (John Sneddon) and Doreen plus another girl, slightly built with reddish hair. Richard Searling worked in acity centre office and also spent an unhealthy amount of time there too. Although I never witnessed any dinking out of UK record centres (other than Jeff King's Souls Sounds and the other early boots from Selectadisc, (BJD, Greenlight etc.) I can well imagine it went on. Don't forget that the sight of a US import even as late as 1970 was a BIG DEAL, I was so bowled over that I sat at home with one of mummy's knitting needles, heated on the gas stove and burned `cut-out` holes in all of my 45s!
Guest Angela Lawrence Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 (edited) Pete and Cathy are away for the weekend so they are unlikley to have seen this post.I am sure Pete will reply to this in due course if he feels he needs too.. This just might be the Pete Lyster appreciation society! I think the first post suggests that Pete may have made up an amusing tale . Anyone who knows Pete will know that he would not do that but I am sure that this is light hearted banter from Dave and Pete Edited September 13, 2009 by Angela Lawrence
Nige Brown Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 I was lucky to see a pre view version of the book that Neil very kindly let me see last night at Lea Hall!! I really is a GREAT looking read! Crammed with information and quality photos! It must have taken a lot of work and time to compile , i for one cant wait to get one!! Nige B

Neil Rushton Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Look forward to reading this book Neil, sounds like you,ve gone to the "Source" and included lots of stories "From the floor" Did anyone else follow Hermans link and see Neils other books ? Worth the time to look LOL Rob Um - I haven't done any other books unless you mean the Booklet that was part of the Sanctuary "Keeping The Box" set? The new jobbie is a proper stand alone 256 full cololur book. Been luckily to get some great interviews - some great stuff from the 60's about Guy Stevens at The Scene, Dan Penn blagging his way into Fame to watch Otis Redding produce "Sweet Soul Music", Eddie Levy talking about his Dad owning Oriole Records and Berry Gordy falling asleep at their flat after Sunday lunch in London, Norman Jopling on being "the world's first R'n'B journalist", Tony Cummings on nicking records and the start of the Soul fanzines, Donnie Elbert being arrested for being found with a gun during a police raid, Emperor Rosko making a prat of himself, Sidney Barnes on forming Geo-Si-Mic productions with Mike Terry and George Clinton, Golden World promotion man Casablanca on the ways they tricked the radio stations into playing Ric-Tic singles, Georgie Fame discovering jazz and how his Live album had to be re-recorded on a Tuesday night as the tape recorders didn't work on the Saturday which has down in legend as the night it was recorded....the list goes on. Seventies section being finished now...John Manship's stories on the drugged up cat that led to him finding the first copy of Larry Clinton and the lad who in the middle of Wigan Casino looked at a covered up copy of "Trypt On Love" and memorised the matrix number pretty good too, and the Levine haters will no doubt be entertained by his stories of death threats and clearing the Higland Room with the first UK play of "You Left Me" - The Admirations because the crowd wanted the likes of The Carstairs. And Graham Warr's account of finding records in Miami in 1971 is jaw dropping. What I could so with - some mad stories about the druggy side of things in the 70's.] Thanks Neil
