Percevere with me on this one , as there is a point to it ......

Lady B and I spent an enjoyable couple of hours on Sunday in Cleethorpes ( I know - the words " enjoyable " and

" Cleethorpes " are not normally used in the same sentence ) , and as part of that sojourn , we walked down the promenade from the Pier in the direction of what was the Winter Gardens .

Nearing the site of the WG , an old mate ( the first time I had seen him since Adam was a lad ) shouted me from across the other side of the road , informing me with a broad smile " slow down Burton , Gardens is shut "

After much hugging , enquiring as to each others' health and general boring matters , the subject turned to the halcyon days of Cleethorpes , and the walk between the Pier and the WG , to which he made the comment " it were a bastard if tha was blocked ,and it were a bastard if tha were straight "

That walk is unique in the history of NS venues .......

Hi Malc, was the Winter Gardens open all the time when the Pier was on?

The reason I ask I only went to Cleethorps a few times, and only once did we walk from the pier to the gardens and back.

Marie Nolan used to run coaches from Accrington to Cleethorps, that's we got there back than.

Hi Malc, you sure is right. Made that walk myself many a time and shuffling along the seafront at weird hours of the morning was a part of what Cleggy was all about.

I might have showed you this before but if not then just to upset ya

Yes : Mary opened the WG to take the overspill from the Pier , caused by its' success , and was run in tandem .

The site of the WG is still as it was following the demolition , albeit the ground on which it stood is overgrown and covered in weeds . The car park is being used - not surprisingly -as a car park .

I saw a newspaper hoarding outside a shop , stating that Cleethorpes residents had demanded to know what is happening with the site .

God i must be well outta touch, i never even knew it had been demolished,.. a nother one bites the dust,.. but the memories last forever

Cheers for that Malc, like I said only went over to the WG once at the time of the nighters.

Went to a good few of the dayers there in more recent times.

them was the days it was part of the night too, walking down to the gardens middle of winter . give the gums a rest take in some refreshment by way of a ice lolly (yes ice lollies were available in the cafe on the pierwinter and summer ) also caught some good sunrises in the summer too. FOOKIN BRILL DAYS.

Hiya Malc, sounds very familiar to a situation some 28 years ago in Lancashire does'nt it?? Apparently the site was gonna be used for an old folks home and i did'nt know until now that it had'nt been built. Anyway mate i can remember some fantastic times on the Pier, dancing to the Commodores, the zoo. Bloody thing used to rock on its stantions to that record. How it never collapsed into the North sea is beyond me. Anyway i'm back in the U.K soon for the Skeggy weeknder and might just take a ride over to Clegg to show the missus where all the fuss was created. Any idea what Mary Chapman is doing now ?? I have not spoken to Mary for a few weeks , but the last time I did , I can report that both her and Colin were well , and in good spirits .

Am I right in saying that the Winter Gardens closed an hour after the pier? We use to walk down for the last hour or stop at the little cafe in the promenade wall for a brew.

Then if the weather was good (summer!!) sit on the beach and listen to the nights sounds on a tinny Cassette recorder.........happy days indeed.

Ah yes, spent many a happy hour walking between the WG and the pier as the sun came up.

Who can forget, on the walk back to the pier, the distant sound of THUMP, THUMP, THUMP getting louder and louder as you got closer.

Yep, it was the feet of a crowded dancefloor at the end of the pier.Magic.

Once stashed (foolishly) some blueys & chopsticks on the beach before I went into the pier, came out for them about 4am and the tide was in.

Happy Days indeed.
