I suppose we saw most of them at the Dixieland Allnighters - '78ish - at Colwyn Bay. Still got a flyer for that great event. It was the only allnighter that sold wine as the only alcoholic drink that I can remember!

I have just read the article and I realise it is predominantly referring to the late 70s, and apart from Colwyn Bay I did not go out on the scene much then but I feel that the North Wales scene was alive and kicking in about 1974 (and earlier, but I was too young) and was championed by, IMO the greatest female NS DJ ever, Patti Swallow from the Orbit (Palace Hotel) Rhyl.

 As Colwyn Bay happens to be in North Wales I'm not that surprised that " We saw most of them at the Dixieland niter " by the way who are "We" ??

North Wales in the 70s

Try out the following web site

www.paynesreunion.co.uk

Paynes Cafe Royal was a club on Mostyn Street in Llandudno.

It was a jumping off point for many who would follow the paynes sessions with a trip to the wheel.

The above website has some amazing photos from the early 70s, they hold a reunion every year, no big names as djs but had Edwin there a couple of times before he sadly passed on.

If you do decide to pay a visit, please leave a message in the guest book !!

cheers

I was stationed at RAF Valley in 73/74 - and ran the No 10 Club on the base. We had a Northern soul night every Sunday which was reasonably well attended - possibly due to the fact that you could get a drink.

Managed to get JJ Barnes and Edwin Starr as live acts however and hosting them will always be one of the big memories of my life.

The most amazing two years of my life - which peaked with an All Niter on 26th May 1974 - which had 1000 tickets sold - and was in aid of charity - sad footnote to that was that one of the guys on the organising committee did a runner with the money and deserted - never did find out what happened to him.

Worked along the Coast too with North Wales Soul Club ( Glbert Gillan and Robert Redhead) both sadly not into the scene anymore

Also met what turned out to be the love of my life and a my true soul mate during this time too - but circumstances dictated that we were not destined to end up together !

I can honestly say that my time there actually moulded me into the character I am today - the friendliness and solidarity was amazing
