Sorry to report that Chris Savory died on Tuesday 1st September, aged 62. Chris would have been well known to many members of this forum, as a collector, dealer, record fair organiser, broadcaster, writer, magazine publisher and occasional DJ, among many other activities. He was a major fan of soul music and turned me on to some great tunes.

This really is the saddest news; it really is hard to believe!

He was a real gentleman of the soul scene. His knowledge was outstanding and I can still remember those outstanding soul nights he put on at the Bear.

Some of my earliest soul recollections were of Chris, he recommended no end of soulful 45's and filled our ears with wonderful soulful tunes that we may have

never heard if it hadn't have been for Chris Savory.

I'm really saddened at this great loss.

He will be sadly missed!!!

HOW VERY SAD TO HERE THIS NEWS, I First met Chris at the Casino in the early days, even used to sell HBS for him, He pathed the way for the advancement in Soul music in many ways similar to Dave Godin, He did great write up,s in Black Echos (there is a issue that he writes about myself at the Casino, if any body has a copy of that article I would be most appreciate it?) There was much going for the late Chris, perhaps the fact he started the concept of Record Fairs would be a fitting salute, I remember Mick Smith and myself going to I think the 1st one in Cambridge in 77. When I moved to Kent in the early 70s, lo and behold I ended up about 6 miles from Chris's place, he lived at Minster on the Isle of Sheppey. He'd just started running HBS. We became good friends and subsequently went to a lot of shows and record stores in connection with the mag. On my first visit to his home, he showed me a green London label, single sided demo of Darrell Banks' `Our Love`! When he moved to Newcastle he soon ended HBS and brought out Soul Cargo and then got into record fairs and local radio. Chris was a dedicated enthusiast and the world will be a worse place without him.

Sad to hear, he included a review of Northern nights in Bedford( 1977via Tony Warot) in HBS (Down at the Club section) which put the venue on the soul map at the time and helped bring and convert many more soul fans in the area.....

Spent a lot of time with Chris in the 70's, he was a big supporter of our All-Dayers at The Ritz and Blackpool Mecca and used to come round to see us on lazy Sunday afternoons and talk music. He came up with a Darrell Banks demo on London with the titles typed on, not printed, told me for ages he had it and I told him no way, one day he duly turned up and sold it to me.

Apart from his love of Soul Music he was a lovely human being! R.I.P.

Very sad to hear this.I was first in contact with Chris about 1976 when i was bit of a Detroit collector,and he helped me out with label listings,Missing numbers etc------i finally got to meet him at the Bear at West Brampton(??) Newcastle,Staffs one night with Nick and Johnny Beggs when Chris sold me some mising Impact discs(not rare but just bloody hard to get when you,re looking 4 them--you all know what i mean!!!)Always a smile and so helpful.

Just heard about Chris Savory's recent death. I have to say he was a brilliant soulman, a great ambassador for the soul scene, good alround chap, with a school masters voice. He could be extremly funny or deadly serious. I will always remember him at Newcastle Tiffs alldayers back in the 1970's, with his record stall, and enthusiasm for his Records. He was also a good broadcaster as well, able to hold your attention and impart information in his own no nonsence style. Rest in peace good friend........Brian Rae

This is very sad.Chris was a friend for more years than I can remember.I am shocked.Chris allowed me to guest on his radio show many times.In the early days I used to have stalls at his fairs and even stayed at his house a few times.We interviewed Ronny McNier at the Nautical William together.We chatted to Billy Butler together when he appeared in Stoke.

I wrote the occasional article for his magazines.So many good memories of Chris Savory.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends like Nick.Chris will be sadly missed.

I can't claim to have known Chris but I met him a few times in the early 90's when I had a stall at some of his record fairs (I distinctly remember doing Rolls Royce in Crewe, would have been 1992 and I think I did at least another one as well before moving down south) and he was a really lovely guy, very enthusiastic, friendly and helpful which was especially appreciated by this (then) 24 year old stall holder selling all sorts of vinyl including some northern. My condolences to his family.

just got back from working away read about him in shropshire star remember going to one of his record fairs years ago and i leaned over a knocked a large box of soul off table all over the floor ! he never moaned just picked them up and joked about it ,then when ever i saw him he held the boxs very tightly, nice bloke . remember he was a big dells fan and you cant get better than them can you rip

Several people have asked about a memorial night for Chris. There will be a night in Chris's memory at the George Hotel, Swan Square, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, ST6 2AE, on Friday November 6th (8.00-1.00). DJs will be Dave Bell and myself (the other 2/3 of the team from the Bear, Newcastle, way back when), Keith Minshull and local guests. £5 on the door, all proceeds to Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

It would be great to see as many of his old mates as we can pack in to the place.
