simonb Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 you say: To knock a man who's output clocks up 30+LP's is stupid - he'd made at least a dozen outstanding tracks. That knocks more or less any individual artist championed by the Northern scene for six. he's made hundreds of tracks (as has already been pointed out, even 30 lps only scratches the surface really) and if you only think a dozen of them are outstanding that leaves a lot of mediocrity. you're making the argument for me! link You're just sounding obtuse Dan. Northern Soul's always been based on Song not artist. Many of the top Northern sounds are one hit wonders. Most recorded no more than a dozen songs during their whole career (I know there are exceptions). I'm not making the argument for you, you're ignoring the fact that James Brown's recorded more quality records (let alone just good ones), than most artists revered on the Northern scene, have even laid down to tape. Its got nothing to do with all the ones you dont like (Unless you're Perspective on life is negative or stupid). How many times have people tracked down artists to turn up copies of some gem, Only to be told I've not got any now - but listen to my latest recordings, which are way off the mark? James Brown is not everyone's cup of tea, this I understand. However, I bet most people like at least a few. Prisoner of Love for example is about as soulful as a song gets.

Guest in town Mikey Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Who's James Brown? link I think he is a character in some films. Rex Garvin sang a song dedicated to him, called - Sock it to 'em JB, on Atlantic

Steve G Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 James Bond!! What a ridiculous idea link I thought James Bond was "Agent 00 SOul" - hence Sean Connery appearing in a promo film for Edwin Starr's Ric Tic release at the time.....

Guest Kolla Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Ha ha that's got all the bits I couldn't remember. Only know Specials version. 1980 - what a good year! Mhh what was JB doing then?
Guest Soulpower Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 i just don't agree that JB is all that good, that's all, and no amount of obfuscation by german djs with axes to grind will make me change my view. First it was the Americans, now it`s the Germans. Do you have anything nice to say at all about people outside your own little cosmos? Or will you continue to flamebait? Seems like you call people names because you have nothing else to say that holds any true meaning ...
Guest Soulpower Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 1980 - what a good year! Mhh what was JB doing then? link Don`t even ask. The lowpoint of his career .. which lasted until recently. 1980 was when JB really started loosing his mind ... which would have been easier to accept if his music was good. Unfortunately, he lost touch with soul music that year as well... at least on his records.
