Picture this....... As Im playing Shake me wake me, by The 4 Tops, I get asked...." When are you going to play some Motown?"

Similar scenario with The Miracles Going to a go go. Followed by me asking what Motown the person wants...."What about Higher and higher by Jackie Wilson?" It didnt seem to matter to the person that I explained that Jacke W wasnt on Motown. Hmmm.

I then play, (not in order)

I cant help myself

Tell me its just a rumour baby

Heaven must have sent you

Tears of a clown

Uptight

Just a little misunderstanding

Whole lotta shaking in my heart

Where did our love go

Aint too proud to beg

I guess ill always love you

Its the same old song

This old heart of mine

Im the one you need

The way you do the things you do

Baby love

SOS (Yeh I appreciate it was Polydor here, but got re released on Motown)

Do I love you, Frank W and Chris Clarks versions.

Little darlin

Girl, why you wanna make me blue

Behind a painted smile

Get Ready

Love is like an itchin in my heart

And many more from the same label

To be moaned at for "Not playing any Motown", and "Why are you playing this northern shit"?

I give up. :shades:

Had something similar happen to me about 20 years ago, while playing James' Brown's "I'm A Greedy Man" to a very full dancefloor at an office Christmas PARTY. Some 'hooray henry'-type came up mid-record and asked if I could play something funky, "instead of this rubbish".

I asked what he had in mind and was told "anything by James Brown will do the trick"...

The 'idiot at the dance' is not the exclusive property of the NS scene! laugh.gif

Berry Gordy has got a lot to answer for . The best Motown tunes have always been performed by what I call the Motown B team , Bobby Taylor ,The Originals ,The fantastic Four etc .

Its a shame people dont appreciate quality .

No normal Motown fan would have come up with those objections given that playlist.

The venue (presumably the Fed, Nottingham last night) has another do, a monthly Northern event. Craig is also name DJ involved at a big localish monthly Northern/Handbag event (Westgate).

Probably punter was vaguely aware of this, and was trying to appear 'clever' to boast to his/her mates how theyd used their vast power of musical knowledge to wind up the DJ as soon as they heard a track not on their sole Motown Chartbusters CD.

Some of the Funk Brothers played on that record but I do know what you mean. Maybe they wanted some Charlene.

Spot on, it was at The Fed, but the biggest moan was from a long time old mate of mine, who was saying it was all northern shit! So it actually wasnt someone that goes to The Westgate. He was actually the one complaining that Shake me wake me was northern!!! I ask you!

Mark S suggested a few quality lesser played tracks, but I have to admit, I dropped into the " It Takes Two" bracket, and didnt dare play my favourite Monitors track for fear of being criticised even more!

Another odd thing about the whole night was that quite a few people had come saying they had seen it advertised as a Northern doo, which it hadnt been, and wasnt, but, whenever any , lets call it non Motown northern was played, there were loads more people on the floor, and yet still the moans came about it, probably from the "Baby Love" likers! :wicked:

I've got no time for people who moan when a night is clearly advertised. If it's an oldies night, expect oldies, if it's northern/motown expect a mix, if it's rare soul, RnB and underplayed... expect a good time  You'll never please everyone but at least if a night is promoted as having a clear music policy you can keep away the moaners. Or tell them not to come back if they don't like what's on offer.

Also if people have a problem with the music, they should complain to the promotor, not hassle the DJ during his spot.

HEAR HEAR WELL SPOKEN SIR

BUT THERE ARE SOOOOO MANY STORIES/EVENTS WHERE PEOPLE SEEM TO BELIEVE IT IS THEIR NITE & THEIR NITE ALONE AND YA PLAYING JUST FOR THEM COS NO BUGGA ELSE KNOWS NOWT etc etc

THEN THEY CLAIM TO BE SOUL FANS COS HEY GO TO DOs - nothing changes does it?

It will happen more and more nowadays as venues use the catch all advertising of venues as Northern and Motown.Nothing wrong with Motown, but "Motown" fans often only like the obvious northern stuff and will only dance to a limited number of real motown tunes.

As a member of the team organising events for many years only once have we advertised an event as "northern soul and motown "-and the northern folks did not turn up.The motown fans were hard to please.Never again.

Talking of hard to please dancers--does anyone know who recorded " Something I Like".Play "something I like" is a common request and I really would like a copy of this popular tune in my box.

typical of the ones who attend disco's and want only well known soul and motown tunes and given when they say we like Motown but if you tell them to seek rare and album tracks etc they look at you and go not for me. Ok so your not a motown fan and stand there and argue with them

Get a reality check, why are you even insulting us by asking serous Northenites this question? It seems like you're playing a pub do, and trying to foist on the attendees a playlist of known Motown gems that are past their sell by date on general soul night do's. But are unknown to the aforesaid. In turn making them look like idiots, and scoring brownie points yourself with committed Soul fans?

People who frequent pub do's only want one thing, don't profess to be knowledgeable, and are just out for a good time.

You are obviosuly right Martyn, after all what do I know, Ive only been playing that sort of music for 30 plus years.

All of the radio stations I have worked on doing normal and speciallist soul shows didnt teach me anything.

And DJ'ing at The Regency Suites in Ilkeston, that Echoes magazine quoted as being the best soul night in the UK hasnt helped one iota.

Ditto for doing the monthly Soul and Motown night alongside Kev Roberts, Soul Sam, and Chris King..........nope....nothing.

Oh why cant I do anything right.................

With all that experience craig you obviously knew the answer before you asked . The only other reasons are you were looking for reassurance which you were never gonna get on here or you wanted to impress which that list will never do .

Daviee.....Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

I posted that here just to get across my feelings of frustration, nothing more, nothing less!

As for the list, it was what it says, just the bunch of tracks that were played, how on earth could you misconstrue that?????? How the hell could stuff like Jimmy Mack impress..I ask you!

As I recall, there wasnt actually a question to be answered Davie, so how would I know the answer? :chinstroke:

Hello there, just having read the the post's for this topic i feel that it need's clarifying that the soul night put on at the FED!!!!..... your do was put on at the same venue but this has nothing to do with the original FEDERATION SOUL CLUB which is run by Gary&Mall, this is a well established club and has it's 3rd Anniversary coming up on Saturday 5th September.....

Absolutely!

Then again, did anyone ever imply it was the regular soul night? However, the actual venue was/is unimportant, and was only acknowledged as someone posted where it was, and I confirmed it.

I certainly didnt mention The Fed by name, obviously apart from where the doo would be held. It was always referred to as a Soul & Motown fundraiser for The Nottingham Hoods, with as you say, absolutely no connection to the above mentioned.

Although someone did accuse the organisor of poaching punters from it, which wasnt true anyway, it was only held there as the regular venue The Polish club, was already booked.

No offence my owd but thats someones opinion and i would say the best attended soul night in the country, without a doubt

That dont make it the best to many. Big upping these type of Events seems to have been the trend.

The Big One at Wigan i ask you?

Its a fairground ride at Blackpool innit?

A Soul do in a Shopping Centre,FFS

The Wigan faithful would have certainly rubber stamped that in the mid 70s, Right on

Bet folks wouldnt accept 70s wages, Martyns just making a point and at the end of the day, who really

gives a flying fook what some clown has said about certain Motown records in 2009, that were popular in the late

60s and early 70s. Just shows there ignorance anyrode, risev above it fella

Guys, as can happen on forums, when only the printed word is there, and not an actual human being speaking it, things get slightly/overly misconstrued.

My original post was to show my frustration at what was being said to me, when I had obviously played nothing else than Motown, to be the asked when I was going to play some!

I admit to rising to the bait over the "pub" gig thing by Martyn, and my reply was meant to show that Im not exactly inexperienced at playing a gig or 2, so please take my answers re those gigs in the spirit meant, hey, I wont even mention being asked to introduce Alexander O Neal @ The Royal Concert Hall, when he first came to the UK, or how when I was interviewing Bobby Womack, he spilled coke (cola""") all over the mixing desk!

Just in case the point of my OP has been lost, I'll repeat what I was trying to get across, and that was just sheer frustration having played 30 plus Motown tracks, and then being accused of not playing any! (yet)

Now, lets all play nicely again can we? :tumbleweed3:

Couldn't agree more "talk about stepping on peoples toes" because when a charity night or fund raiser is being held at, and same name used as the regular monthly event and people have ago at the dj or visa versa, it gives it a bad name, ie reply number 3. ps some nice tunes on list though.

I have no idea if the same name was used as I didnt see any flyers/tickets for the event.

I would assume that they would have mentioned that it was a fundraiser for the Nottingham Hoods, and that we would be playing soul and Motown.

Am I wrong?

Show me a flyer if you can, and then I will be able to see for myself if it stepped on the regular events toes, in as far as using the same name as the regular event.

However, surely a venue is at liberty to hire its self out to anyone who is willing to pay for its use, and they (the hirer) would certainly be at liberty to play whatever they wanted.

Just to add, most (not all, thankfully) of the replies here have totally twisted the point of the original post, is it so difficult to actually understand what I was trying to convey?

Seemingly so.

i remember seeing a flyer for this at the last shed in beeston.the guy handing them out just walked in handed the flyers out and then left which i thought was odd.the flyer had the details about where and when and that it was a charity night.then on the very bottom line was(in print very much smaller than used on the rest of the flyer)who the event would benifit.i also thought it was odd that the fed was holding a charity night because the events there are usually well promoted ie not with a white piece of a5.the negative vibe of this charity night and its punters will not put me off the main event there.i know a few of the punters who go there and know that is not the sort of comment you would get from them.
