Once Upon A Time In Wigan Appeal

APPEAL

Please DO NOT HELP these souless w--kers. They already tried to ruin the original play with the 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan LIVE' , blue eyed musical they did at Bolton Octagon.

Russ is only ever interested in making a fast buck and as we all know, wouldn't know a good tune if it landed on his head. And he is, apparently, the musical adviser for the project. He is a tacky 'smashy & Nicey' DJ whos totally poptastic......SO AVOID THIS TERRIBLE PROJECT AT ALL COSTS.

Mick Martin was NEVER on the scene and knows NOTHING about it. He too, is just after a quick buck and neither of these fools should be trusted with making a film about the scene.

Here are examples of what this dynamic duo will do for money and fame!

'This story of love, sex and rock’n’roll is a revamped version of Mick Martin’s original piece, which has already been seen on two previous occasions. Recommissioned by the Octagon, Martin’s brief was to include live music, and Howard Gray and his great band, with terrific vocals from ex-Flying Picket Paul Kissaun, do justice to the nostalgic sound of northern soul.'

so, if briefed, Martin will do anything

and another classic addition

'Set in September 1981 on the last night of the Wigan Casino’s famous all-nighters, Richard Foxton has designed a suitably tatty, two-tiered set with the band playing above and the dancing performed below.'

and

'Although there are still references to the drug scene, which ultimately caused the closure of the casino, the original addiction scenes and the deterioration of their relationships - which gave the show a harder edge - have gone.'

Russ's rose tinted and uninformed view of the Casino striking again. Changing history and the original play!!

Both of these fools careers have been plodding along, lack lustre and devoid of any talent, so they are trying to bastardise this play!

I personally dont remember the flying picketts singing the tunes from the balcony at Wigan...

Yep! Its losing its energy by the second with these soul sucking baboons!

If they REALLY are doing 'their own thing', why use the title of my hit production 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan'? Why did i have to get Bolton to stop using the quotes about my production? Why did i have to ask Russ to take a mis-representing claim off his site about my production? Why are they trying to cash in on the success of my production, if they are so inovative and independent? Call it something else! Then they could truly claim it was their idea!wink.gif

Isn't that Richard Searling on the far left? (can't tell for definite as i can't see if he has basketball boots on).

Perhaps we should run a competition for which Soul artists they look most like - a touch of dark tan boot polish (which I've no doubt the band will be wearing on Russ' show for extra authenticity) and they'd be a dead ringer for Edward Hamilton and the Arabians... Bet they can sing at least as well too :lol:

He obviously seems to be a chancer whos career is on the slide and now, in an effort to cash in, hes making an altered and mis-represented film version of the play. HES ALREADY DONE A MUSICAL VERSIONohmy.gif (with the flying pickets doing the Northern songs!) But, if we all refuse to help, him and Russ will struggle to get it off the ground.yes.gif

If this wasn't discussed on here it wouldn't have even entered my radar, it belongs to the other scene that Terry was on about on the other thread and nothing to do with most of us, or the scene we enjoy. Talking about it on here gives it a credibility it doesn't deserve. It's the same as the POG show, the shopping centre event, the SouledOut film and all the other nostalgia centred crap. I don't give any of it a second thought, it's bugger all to do with the rare soul scene.

I went to see the stage play in Cov and thought it was brilliant, i can't imagine anything worse than a musical version let alone a film version of the musical. It'll be like that crap film of Absolute Beginners, jesus what a mess they made of that brilliant book.

I don't buy CD's. Original vinyl only.

However as it's a play with actors what difference does it make who's singing, playing etc?

We're not talking about the same things as playing boots, CD's etc. This is not a soul night / nighter it's a musical play we're talking about. It is based on someones idea / interpretation of Wigan (probably through very rose tinted glasses) turned into a musical.

When I see a musical in London or on Broadway I don't expect to hear anything other than different performers providing the entertainment.

This is no different.

The Octagon version live (why ffs ?) was like Mamma Mia for a theatre going audience not soul fans . I shudder to think what a film version would be like .

These comercial attempts to represent our scene are by and large unnesersery and no self respecting soul music lover should have anything to do with them .

I loved the Casino and was their from it opening till 1978 brilliant memories and music but now it should be laid to rest enough is enough .

Mark agree 120% the play was excellent(saw it at the Lowry)

Spoke to people conned into going to Bolton----------they couldn't understand why I thought the play was so good,thought they were the same,as for a film no!

i went to see the play in greenwich......... it left me totally flat .it never mentioned anything about what people actually did in order to scrape enough money for entry ,train or bus fare`s, to get to the casino.. to listen to the splendid toons they fired out ..........i personally did a few things myself im not proud to admit on this forum but this is just mvho no.gif

It's a pitty Sid James, Bernard Breslaw, Hattie Jaques, Kenneth Williams and the rest of the Carry On team are no longer with us otherwise the perfect cast for the film version of this.

Don't worry.. Many of us have had to do tricks on lorry drivers in the service station for a free lift to niters.... Its all part of the weekend fun..

Many people ask the same questions about films/ plays, they did not do this and they did not do that.. How can you fit all the experiences of folk into 90mins... Not possible..

Well, if people had refused to help ipso f--kto they would have had no dancers? No advisors and no choreographers. So yes, it would have been harder. I think your the naieve one my friend, i have been involved in theatre and film for over 20 yeras and know how esay it is to halt progression.

EXAMPLE

Russ and Mick have already been asking some clubs if they can film their young crowd and oput it on website to raise interest and finance. Those guys, because they already knew Russ is a soul leach, refused to have anything to do with it...result...no film of that club and their hip young crowd!wink.gif

TRUE Steve...its 90mins. All you can do is tell your own story and tell it truthfully...which i did.

Also, people have lateral thought processes, such as when we saw the dingy flat of Eugene on stage, they might assume that EVERYTHING (including travel) was difficult financially for him....which most of the audience realised...And if they remember, EUGENE had a scooter, so why the f--k would he take a bus or hitch..laugh.gif

Must have been a different play. In the one i did, Eugene had a scooter and so didn't need to take a bus or train.?? Also, his home environment wasn't that smart and most of the audience put 2 + 2 together, that he may be hard up and struggling for cash, by observing this.thumbsup.gif

But, as Steve said not everyone will get it.

I saw the Once Upon A Time In Wigan play at Mansfield in its original form.

It was brilliant from start to finish.

I had no desire to watch a musical version when it appeared nor will I go and watch a shite film version either.:no:

Just want to remember the original for what it was - fooking brilliant.

Spot on Matt. Personally, I hate it when I see all these bloody threads going on about these *******, we all know that in spirit , they are a million miles away from the real Soul scene. Again, personally, whilst I still love great oldies and have no problem attending good oldies nights as well as across the board do's, I actually enjoy the scene today even more than I did when I was younger. There is far more knowledge, a fantastic amount of sounds, people are funnier/wiser and even though the prices have rocketed, I can actually afford to buy more good records than I could when I was 17, thats for sure! Its bloody fantastic to see people our age still grooving and out and about at all sorts of different venues and the sense of camerarderie and absolute love for the music is a LIFELONG collective treasure now, not just a teenage passion which it was first time around....

To borrow RANDY'S phrase, that makes 'This thing of ours' even more amazing in 2009, than it ever was in the 70s and 80s, much as I loved those days like everybody else. But then it was fantasy land. Now its for real. Embedded in the fabric of our grown-up lives. I noticed ADY posted that he got a real kick out of the last 100 CLUB do, funny enough I was there and I had the same feeling as I struggled home across South London on the wrong early morning bus - it was like a realisation of how precious this life is and how great it is when your getting pissed with a mate you've known since you were 12, except you are 50 now but both up and dancing in the middle of summer to a great record you've only just heard! (THE AVONS version of 'When the boy that you love' by the way!)....******* magical and WINSTANLEY and all the other cretins cannot touch that!

I fully understand how ****** off PS may be but I also agree that constantly discussing this bunch only highlights their activities. It would be far better to ignore them and let them become ever more isolated and patently riduclous as the years slip by. Their activities will never affect the real heart of the scene so why give them so much creedence? Who gives a **** who gets fooled by them? What does it matter? Those of us who know the score have the prize already.

I suppose some people are silly enough to believe you can really 'sell' nostalgia.

Meanwhile the rest of us can get on with our love of Soul Music and leave the dead cow for them to pick over.

...As i said, im sorry i started this thread now.laugh.gif In fact their is no film of the play being made...they are so far away from having the money to do it and in fact, the film company is just been set up to make us all think there a film (no pre production even gone on!...what a carry on! Hey...good title I think...'CARRY ON UP THE CASINO' with Russ Winstanley (as Hattie Jacques) & Mick Martin (as Kenneth Williams).
