just a question, is this version of 'lonely girl' the same recording as the young folk version on the same label? does anyone know the story behind this? thanks!

Have you played the B-SIDE? 'Behave Yourself'? 'Lonely Girl' is a shadow of a track by comparisonthumbsup.gif

really? i only have the Young Folk single and was looking at the Miss Madeline on ebay....hhhmmm. maybe i should pick it up!

Should be about £15, pick it up for 'Behave Yourself' a superb piece of midtempo Chicago youth soul. Everybody I have ever played it to, loves it including my Mrs who has a very high judgement ceiling on all things connected to Northern Soul!

You are of course correct in saying that whether you own the Young Folk 45 or not, you still must also own the Miss M. 45 because of its double sider credentials. This was one of those classic " let's cover up the flipside several years after the top side was a popular known tune".

Neither costs as much as a round of drinks, so treat yourself to both and join the northern label completists union thumbup.gif

from my less than reliable memory it was covered as Christine Cooper (?) and survived as a cover up for longer than you'd imagine. I write old cover up names on the sleeve so if anyone is deperate I can go looking.

Cant be more accurate than say sometime between 78 and 85 (just because I remember a club that ran in that time frame where it was a regular play)

i don't think i fully understand the term "cover up". i had heard that jamaican DJs would sometimes scratch off the name of records to protect their finds. did this also happen in britain? and did the DJ then give it a fake name? that is crazy! or do you simply mean it was covered by Christine Cooper (who i have never heard of). sorry for my ignorance!

the story behind this is in my larry blasingaine interview (www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.com).

Miss Madeline was the lead singer of the young folk. The young folk are not the backing group on the "behave yourself" side but they didn't record another song for the flip so they just released the young folk track that was previously released as the b-side. The young folk were previously known as the baby miracles, they only did miracles covers before they signed to mar-v-lus. Their previous lead singer was the lead singer of the Ivories, she had a growth spurt and had to leave the Baby Miracles because she was too large to be in the group so she was replaced by Miss Madeline.

Exactly the same as the Jamaican DJ's apart from in the UK the label is covered by a piece of paper and a fake name and title is given to keep the record exclusive to the DJ's.

That`s right pal. But the answer to the guy`s question is yes-both Miss Madeline AND The Young Folk`s "Lonely Girl" ARE the same cut..Isn`t this collecting lark wonderful and informative...
