Wrongcrowd Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I would say not many people on here like all of the music on the Soul Scene....(and if you do get back on you space -ship pal coz you're not from round these parts)... Not a great ratio, but plenty on here have a broad appreciation of all things soulful, though you'll find them mostly on the media threads listening rather than bitching Take me to the mothership............or Lifeline, Boomerang, The Attic, Dab of Soul, Soul Essence and other like minded planets of enlightenment.......

Reg Scott Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 There's one 'scene' that we seem to be forgetting... The place where the masses congregate to enjoy and share our music. They are the silent majority. This is the domain of the 'Soul Potato' in venues like the 'Front Room', 'Bedroom' and 'Spare Room'. The Soul Potato is a proud idler with many years - and beers - under his belt. God bless them all! "The condition of perfection is idleness: the aim of perfection is happiness."

Pauldonnelly Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 One that seems to hold true with all thats underground, dark ,sweaty and edgy playing pumping black music to die for the other is a complete plastic, commercial scene that bares no resemblance to anything about now or in the past frequented by people off of another planet or so it seems...tezza just so I know where this is all going before I reply in a polite way are you suggesting that those that stay awake all night , dance a bit and nod away to those in close proximity with a " what the fukk is this" are the elite while those that take a far more sedate approach to doing what you aspire to are "wankers" and should be chastised forever and and a day?
Guest familytree Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 What do you need to know, no expert, but I put 8 in my pond ten years ago there are now over 50 in there! hey what about the fact that the fish will stop reproducing when they feel the pond is getting too full!... i think thats amazing, clever little things.. so 50 may be your limit steve depending on thesize of your pond! where were we??... ah yes too many soul ponds! will they stop producing when they have reached thier natural lmits? x
Mark S Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Its a ridiculess situation nowadays that we are so fragmented are we really that narrow minded anally repressed and bitter that we cant remember , back in the so called golden age of Northern soul The Wheel ,Torch,Casino ,Mecca and Ritz all played a good mix of oldies , new releases and contemporary sounds to full dance floors . The soul police would,nt allow that now shame really or am I looking back with rose coulored specs ?
Guest Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 (edited) just so I know where this is all going before I reply in a polite way are you suggesting that those that stay awake all night , dance a bit and nod away to those in close proximity with a " what the fukk is this" are the elite while those that take a far more sedate approach to doing what you aspire to are "wankers" and should be chastised forever and and a day? As I do not undertake in the activities of those in the first category , I must belong in the second , and as a result , I will have to order a roll of sackcloth , a ton of ashes , and get Minit to make a brand new cat o' nine tails in preperation for my eternal chastising ....... You as we all know aspire to be the big promoter and dj.You only, just like many others go NOWHERE unless you have something to do with the venue or to dj,any respect l had for you went out the window when you teamed up with paddy greedy despite my warnings about the type of fella he was,you subsequently got burned.Your signature has a list of venues that you wouldn't set foot in unless you'd been asked to dj and once you've been and dj'd they won't see you again. You were asked to dj at morley carr (an honour imo) you took a mimi bus full of people up there for a good night out....you know what upset my friends in the north it wasn't that you played a set of big oldies...it was that you got there 10 mins before your set and promptly cleared off as soon as you'd finished your set and couldn't be bothered to stay and enjoy the other dj's.You never support your good friends locally (ray, russ and others) unless you're invited to dj. What l mean't in my original post has nowt to do with oldies v newies or nighters v soulnites just attitudes one part of the scene just gets on with the music with little fuss the other side just gets cheesier and cheesier as time goes by ie shopping centre doos , soul cruises funny clothes, daft trinklets, car stickers and god knows what. The music has largely been forgotten. There is a TORCH reunion coming up where lots of folk are gonna meet in a car park in tunstall and swap stories of the day (most of em will have never been). This club is in the past...where it should be left.I have spoken to a lot of old torch fellas who have said the same, blimey Mr Donnelly you only went twice ffs lol .....Lastly l would rather be at a venue listening to a good mixture of current niter spins, uptempo r&b,uptempo gospel, underplayed stuff and a good sprinkling of quality oldies with people saying WHAT THE FECK IS THIS!!never heard this before it's brilliant, because they are actually listening to the music, than being at a plastic, stuck in the past venue with people saying what the feck is this,l don't know it or play something we know.....like theres' a ghost in my house............T
Guest Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 There are of course numerous different interest groups and factions - though we're all of a soul bent (some of us being more bent than other ) - that said personally I'd see the split as essentially being nighter crew / soul night people - I know at least all the guys I mix with tend to not feel they get a proper soul fix from a soul night (I almost never go to them unless it's warming up for a Saturday nighter or on the way to the nighter - at least when I AM going out)... Whereas soul night people for the most part tend to have always been soul night people and usually have never been big nighter goers - (before I get shot down in flames) I would of course say there are exceptions - equally for the most part I think the really rank oldies tend to get their spins at soul nights wheres in general the regular nighter crew tend to be more wary of overplaying etc coz they hear so much soul (both whilst out and pre and post-going out) and so quickly get sick of stuff that gets spun too often (the 'I love it but I'm pig sick of hearing it' factor - which of course applies, or SHOULD apply, to excess spins of new discoveries too). Anyway not rocket science but it's what I think as a regular who's in hybernation Dave That does not ring true to me... Certainly in the south, the people I've known for years will attend all sorts of events, simply depending what's on. The last 3 events I've been to in London have all been very different types of events, CRYSTAL PALACE SOUL (A do in a backstreet pub, boozy and raucous!) VAVAVOOM in North London (A late finish Soul night) and the last 100 CLUB ALL NIGHTER. Some of the same people were at all of them! A variation of music too as well as venues. No, the above definition is a little too mechanical!
Roger Williams Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 ..But great times mate...Can't imagine anyone now playing a new Soul release these days, but maybe someone out there has! Roger Williams Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 But would there be a chance of them getting played at a Northern Soul Night.. Only if Soul Sam plays them. And only if they're released on vinyl, which accounts for about 0.0002% of new releases nowadays.

You as we all know aspire to be the big promoter and dj. I enjoy promoting far more than playing records as it gives me the opportunity to raise money for charity's, believe it or not Terry this last 3 years I've helped raise over £3000 from soul events I've been connected with infact at a night I'm helping with in Sept I've paid for everyone one to attend i.e. 250 people who will donate equally to my personal charity, hardly the actions of a BIG I AM PROMOTER. Over the last 10 years from non soul associated areas I've helped raise over £75.000 something I'm incredibly proud of so lets put the record straight, when I promote I do it for Charity also when I dj I hardly ever take a fee requesting the promoter donates it to a local charity.Unlike others I want to MAKE nothing personally from events I help orgainise. Finally me a dj, I'm fookin useless as you well know..end of. You only, just like many others go NOWHERE unless you have something to do with the venue, again that's not quite true however a fair proportion of my nights out revolve around me playing some records, I have the passion but not the enthusiasm anymore or to dj, any respect l had for you went out the window when you teamed up with paddy greedy despite my warnings about the type of fella he was, you subsequently got burned. You have summed it up parkash,I am well in my fifties and i still go out and enjoy most aspects of soul music, it comes from the heart, I have 2 lads 20,and 21 and they even compliment me and my wife about going to soul nights, I have been known to leave the bar when a record i like is being played then go back to pay for the drinks when its done. Soul is in your blood ,oldies, modern, R+B, crossover, jazz, if its good enough you will want to listen and dance to it. KTF

You insist on doing all your dirty washing on public forums - why?

Guest Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 (edited) Truth is, most 'Northern' fans are totally oblivious to New Soul... and quite happy to remain so, despite hankering for the days when the old and the new were all played in the one room! Sean Yeah that is definetly true Sean and I have to confess I am one of those exact people! The remarkable truth though, is that there is a 'collective' knowledge (and subsequent scene discography) now that far outstrips that apparent in 74/75 when many people entered the scene. In fact as the years go by, it sometimes feels like I am climbing an insurmountable mountain of records and if you are a normal Northern 60s/70s fan you can easily write off the next 20 years and still not have heard everything. (By which time many of us will have shuffled off and the ones left will probably struggle to remember 10 titles!) The volume of records to explore is immense and unless you are a full time Dealer, DJ, Millionaire etc who can spend your whole life trawling lists, the internet, US warehouses, your never going to get near hearing it all are you? So for me, its not a case of not wanting to hear 'new' soul. But I am still hearing what I class as 'new' records thirty or 40 years after their bloody release and I am so helplessly in love with the sounds of those eras, it leaves me with little time or inclination to widen the net even further! For example ADY played THE AVONS 60s version of PEGGY GAINES 'When the boy that you love' last saturday at the 100 CLUB, I'd never heard it and had to PM asking him who it was but what a record! In the last year I've picked up on JACKIE JASON, BARBARA HALL, HERMAN GRIFFIN and PAULINE SHIVERS courtesy of STEVE PLUMB and these are bloody fantastic records to my ears and yet I've never heard them before in 36 years of going to do's! Every night I have the bloody time, I find more records that I do not know and they are all from that original 60s-70s era. Maybe if there is another life, I'll get a chance to seriously explore the 80s and 90s but I doubt it somehow! Edited August 25, 2009 by chorleysoul
spirit Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 For those interested we left 20mins before the eveining ended due to the near on 4hr journey home due to local problems at Tallington and Pondersbridge I don't mean to be rude, as I know you are responding to a personal attack, but I do believe that is the most off-topic, local radio comment I have ever read.
