Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Last week's went down ok and had the bizarre side effect of creating a bit of demand (well one person anyway) for Jackie Forrest's "Show Me How To Love" Here's another one. Personally I think it will be a bit easier once you get on the right track - but who knows? Staying with the tradition, this guy is connected with the rather 'left field' side of Northern Soul. The more people join in the better it is and there's no shame in having a guess, so please have a go Here's our mystery geezer

Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 I get the feeling you're not all taking this completely seriously... Anyway - nope to all of those excellent suggestions. Obviously this is an old photo of him. I'll post a more recent one in a bit if we're not getting warmer.
Guest isis Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Rick Astley Godzilla, you've been Rick-rolled
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Godzilla, you've been Rick-rolled I have no idea what that means but it sounds painful Actually, I can still walk fine so I suspect it hasn't happened yet
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 ...just what is 'left-field' mean and while l'm asking, mid or right field...lt's Charlie Gracie innit? By left field I meant records played at UK soul clubs that wouldn't have been considered soul records anywhere else. Or anywhen maybe? As a rock n roller, Charlie Gracie would fit into that category. Ain't him though... Charlie Gracie
Simon T Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I was going to say Bill Bush, but that trombone look like Larry Sprigg's, so is it Bob Brady?
Simon T Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I was going to say Bill Bush, but that trombone look like Larry Sprigg's, so is it Bob Brady?
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Well it wasn't Rick Astley the first time it was suggested soooooooooo... Fair bit older than Ricky boy to be honest.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 ....Rufus Lumley??? Just kiddin'..........Jerry Fuller!! A bit less R&B than Jerry Fuller
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 I was going to say Bill Bush, but that trombone look like Larry Sprigg's, so is it Bob Brady? Blimey - who's Larry Sprigg? Bob Brady's trombonist I guess? Not right but that's certainly using your noggin
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 charlie rich ? I know Charlie became a country star but he wwas pretty R&B in the 60s wasn't he. This guy wasn't really R&B at all - although there are connections to various sorts of black music in addition to his Northern soul tune...
Davenpete Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Ady Croasdell during one of his forays into different haircuts. Dave
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 B J Thomas Another bloke who did country and R&B. Nope. Our mystery geezer isn't connected with country music in any way as far as I'm aware.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 ...Always thought that JF was a C&W singer......Is it Johnny Bristol!! Fuller stsrted off doing rockabilly and grew into a phenomenal writer, doing stuff for everybody from the Union Gap to O c Smith. He wrote the garage classic "Lies" for the knickerbockers - a fantastic early Beatles type rocker and also wrote "Show and Tell' as cut by Al Wilson among others. It's not Johnny Bristol either mate
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Is it Ray Merrell? (bloody awful record) Isn't he another country dude - albeit British? he certainly sounded country on the Pye demo I picked up in a job lot. Sorry isis, like I said deffo not a country artist.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 T.D Valentine?? As in ex boss of Sony records and ex Mr Mariah Carey? Nah - he was a trumpeter
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Bobby Diamond No - but right sort of period as to when his record was played on the scene
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Tom King Can see where you're going - and it's the wrong way Our chap was the named artist on the record. Tom was producer of Outsiders and record boss for J C Messina wasn't he?
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Cracking shout!! But if not Shane Martin!! Nope. Shane had another blue eyed soul record didn't he - One and One? Our fellow only had one track played on the scene.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 arin demain? This is a lot further removed from soul than silent Treatment, Rhino.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 So are we talking 77ish? I'm rubbish with years but that sounds about right. Maybe a year either way - your era for sure webslinger.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Felix Cavaleer The (Young) Rascals were pretty much a blue eyed soul act. This chap ain't no soul man, Ken.
Guest rovers Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 (edited) Brian Hyland ? (or how ever you spell it)The joker went wild singer Edited August 16, 2009 by rovers

Rhino Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 This is a lot further removed from soul than silent Treatment, Rhino. ray merell
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Jay Traynor?? Out of Jay and the Americans? He's on facebook you know

Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 (edited) God he's changed since that original picture you posted!! Sure has - here's a later pic Edited August 16, 2009 by Godzilla
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 ....Got it!!!!!!Mike McDonald!! Doobie Brothers were a white soul act mate. This fellow is NOT A SOUL ACT - but like I said he's connected in a way with black music. Or maybe that should be black art or maybe culture. Some folks at the time would argue about that though.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Should have said before - I'll take questions, same as last week. Only those that I can give a 'Yes' or 'No' answer to though
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Nipping to the offy be back in 20...Don't get it or talk about me 'til then! Quick!!! I'll whisper it to you all while dafthead's out of the room
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 is it jackie de shannon Ah, Sheldon - you're late. Sit down there. No! Not next to Rhino - you're a bad influence on each other. If you can't behave you'll be outside Mike's office before you can say Jack Robinson.
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 don ray or ben zine ? Don Ray had another blue eyed thing on Polydor didn't he? Something to do with rain? As for Ben Zine - never seen a photo. Have to say this bloke's tune is even further away from soul music than Mr Zine's!
Godzilla Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 was it played at wigan Most definitely a Wigan record
Simon T Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Should have said before - I'll take questions, same as last week. Only those that I can give a 'Yes' or 'No' answer to though In the photo, the backdrop look like something from the 50's and the trombone suggests he's the trombonist in a 'band', rather than a member of R&B / R&R beat combo, or is that a red herring? If not, is he xxxxx & the somethings? And his name is the same on the record? I keep thinking of the likes of Bob Kuban, Frankie Ford, Bill Black's Combo, Am I barking up the right tree?
