Godzilla Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I keep seeing references on here and on dealers sites to records that are "getting rarer" or that are "going to be rare one day", "Future Rarity" and so on. Clearly this is nonsense isn't it? I mean, the only way something could get rarer is if copies were destroyed or ceased to exist in some other way. I'm not referring to the sort of records that are locked up in collections and rarely emerge either - the phrase isn't usually applied in that way. what's it all about then? is it that some people don't understand the distinction between rarity and demand? Otherwise, does the language give a clue to how the mind of the person using it works: do they really think that these items get scarcer? Alternatively, does it just not matter and am I getting miffed at something that nobody else gives a toss about?
Rob Wigley Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I think they should be using the old American dealers phrase "Hard to find", or as is the case "In Demand" The only way something can "Get rare" is if some has all the copies and starts to destroy them ... Rob

Rob SURELY ANYTHING THAT IS NO LONGER BEING PRODUCED ,IS FRAGILE,IS 30+ YRS OLD,IS BEING USED ON A TURNTABLE WITH A STYLUS ...IS GETTING RARER ??? Or are you referring to people's constant use of the terminology as a sales pitch?? Pretty harmless imho , it would'nt influence my decision to buy a record, and it certainly does'nt bother me ,as much as Ebay sellers ,who put northern soul or crossover in front of everything that is remotely soulful

Personally I think a lot of folk use it when they mean "getting more expensive", which is more related to demand / exposure. Glad you can be so relaxed about it anyway - this is the sort of thing that drives me nuts!

Guest gordon russell Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 only the fullness of time determines a records rarity.......plus a bit of knowledge...This however can be turned upside down if someone finds a big box full as in the case of CLARA HARDY

An increase in available copies by stock turning up = a less rare record. I guess if someone lost a box load or dropped them, smashing them to bits the record could become more rare but otherwise it's a load of horlicks innit?
KevH Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 If we could just get Butch to retire ,,,,,,,surely the price would drop and records would become readily available again
