6 Million People Can't Be Wrong

Well, there's two sides to every story Paul and since I don't know the circumstances I can't comment but I guess that does explain your attitude somewhat. I think it was more to do with them trying to protect their copyright in Dave Shaw's "Wigan" book wasn't it........?

Ian D smile.gif

The play was nothing to do with Dave Shaws book, other than it used the word Wiganthumbsup.gif . I only read it recently in factsleep3.gif . So it was a case of THEM (BE COOL) trying to control something that they thought they might earn a buck out of. If, as they suggested, we had plagiarised the book, we would have been in court and stopped. As it was, they had to run away, tail between legs. embarassed at their sick attempt to stop something that made a good contribution to the scene and its history. They were chancing their arm at the prospect of controlling what we were doing. Fortunately, we were and are, way to bright for that type of bullying! So, yes, of course that is a reflection on Manifesto. Why do i want to read a banal, superficial lad mag, run by bullying chancers? (some of them anyway). They were protecting nothing....why haven't they made Shaws book into a play or film? I'll tell you, its because they haven't got the love, committment or soul to embark on the job! It takes spirit, dedication and insight to pull it off....and i have a feeling the only thing they are able to pull off is each other (metaphorically speaking of coursewhistling.gif )... That aside, even without the attempt at stopping the play, the Mag is narrow and run by a soul clique who have nothing to do with the scene i support.........A book on Zoo's by Tim? is that an 'ooh, ooh, a human zoo, ooh?' Bit like the red eye page!laugh.gif

Hi Paul,

Phew. There's enough material here for a case study in the psychology of a twisted mind. Might be time to see a shrink mate before you get into this too deep! thumbsup.gif

Just a couple of points this time:-

"I'll tell you, its because they haven't got the love, committment or soul to embark on the job!"

However they did of course write and publish one of the defining books about Northern Soul, the 320 page "The In Crowd" in 1999 which is probably the best-selling book ever about Northern Soul and still available after numerous re-prints. shades.gif

"That aside, even without the attempt at stopping the play, the Mag is narrow and run by a soul clique who have nothing to do with the scene i support".

Hang on a minute. I thought you were the guy who did a play about Wigan Casino? I was a resident D.J. at Wigan Casino and many of the people who have contributed to Manifesto over the years I first met @ Wigan. Must be that parallel universe that keeps happening ay? g.gif

A book on Zoo's by Tim? is that an 'ooh, ooh, a human zoo, ooh?'

Tremendous pun! When the next play? thumbup.gif

Bit like the red eye page!

There ya go insulting the good readers of Manifesto again......whistling.gif

Yeah it's called 'Soul Renaissance' and you can get it from me. A proper hardcore rare soul fanzine. Had a chance to go glossy, not interested.

Martyn

Got any back issues Martin? I would particularly like to read the issue that had a write up about my allnighter. :chinstroke:

Not a brilliant write up Phil i must admit. But i'll sort a copy out, #11 some reprints to do.

A bit late with this, but I've only just had an unfortunate toe curling read of July's Manifesto over breakfast this morning.

What a disgusting breakfast it's been.

It's their magazine so I guess they can write what they like. If you don't like it, don't buy it, don't visit Ian Levine's YouTube stuff and you'd save yourself some energy by not having to write negative postings thumbup.gif

Perhaps you should follow your own advice Chris, and stop going to venues that have any of your pet hate 'Rare Soul' DJs on the line-up, so you won't have to do the same.....

Still avoided the issue of the BE COOL backstabbers! I love the way you people can't answer a question directly..you can only have a stab at retorting with some odd vageurism about psychology..unsure.gifsleep3.gif

Yes, nice pictures...good coffee table browser...hardly an in depth insight. The daily Star has numerous re-prints!laugh.gif

There you go, like many others, resting on your ancient laurels.(they must be crushed with all that heavy leaning by now) ..frankly, i dont give a toss where you djed and Wigan wasn't the pinnacle of soul for me....it was the scene , the whole scene, at that time that was brilliant. The play was about Wigan, the whole thing, from a punters point of view (mine) and, as a punter, i didn't notice you.

Tremendous pun! When the next play? thumbup.gif

Im doing a play called 'OLGA' , it opens at CONTACT in February and will, like Wigan, play to over 100,000 people. Yourself?biggrin.gif Maybe you will do 'Julius Ceasar' or another Roman classic where Laurels count! Or maybe you can do a 'Laurels and Hardly (got a clue)' classic.....

There ya go insulting the good readers of Manifesto again......whistling.gif

Paul, I'm totally independent here but I read the book again about 2 months back and it is in fact the most in depth book ever written about Northern Soul. Honest.

Thank you Paul for having the guts to reveal the shocking truth behind the Manifesto Brotherhood (yes, that is it's full name). It's time people were told!

I was editor of the magazine and a former director of Bee Cool but managed to escape from its evil clutches after the facts behind this sinister organisation began to dawn on me. L Ron Hubbard & the Scientologists, the Branch Davidians, Jonestown... they've got nothing on the Manifesto Brotherhood!

Like many others, I thought the pictures in Red Eye were of people having fun, but I was so wrong. These are broken, brainwashed victims of what I now know to be a treacherous cult. Those crazy dance moves, dilated pupils and demonic grins should have alerted my attention.

I agree The Master (or Mike Ritson as he is known on the Northern scene) comes across as a lovely fellow, but don't be hoodwinked by his charm (He's clearly got you fooled Ken - the beard is a major clue!) He is nothing less than the devil incarnate! A soul charlatan - he won't be content until the whole of the Northern scene is in his powerful grasp. Tim 'Johnny Morris' Brown fled the roost for an issue or two recently but even he was 'persuaded' to return.

I've since discovered that the spelling mistakes in the magazine were intentional. They are coded references inserted by The Master and his disciples, and as for the (metaphorical!) initiation rites, you don't know the half of it. Forget the Masons and their rolled-up trouser leg and oaths of allegiance this was truly terrifying. I've still got the emotional scars to prove it.

I've said far too much now, but thanks for the warning about watching my back. Keep up the brave work Paul. The Northern scene is a far better place because of true soul fans such as yourself.

Ha!no.gif see what i mean about these guys, still avoiding the issue of why they tried to STOP the play and cash in on what they thought was a lucrative new market. Make as many lame attempts at humour as you like mate, truth is truth and your still avoiding it!wink.gif Fact is i sorted tickets for Ritson and his son, on request of Winstanley and the guy came to the play and the after party ...shook my hand, said thanks and THEN....ISSUED A WRIT a couple of days later (or was that you?). So yes, your analysis of him is spot on...well done mate. If thats the way you and your staff behave, its no wonder you end up with a vacuous mag full of back stabbing...sorry i mean back scratching, soulessness!

I have never spoken about this and was shocked by that behaviour at the time and didn't want to air your vampiric tendancies in public.

BUT, listening to you and co, rant on and on with your self righteous pap, just pushed it out!yes.gif

Thanks for the praise, ive always found it a good virtue to face and speak the truth, so no insult their. Perhaps the Magazine might consider dealing with stuff truthfully in the future? I know, 'crazy suggestion', but hey, come on, you can do it!

Be Cool, great name, perhaps the strap line ' a laxative for the soul' could work? as, it certainly is full of souless s--tthumbup.gif

Thanks for the warning Stuart. thumbsup.gif

The beard is a dead giveaway and I should have seen that from the off. It's only after reading the above and re-watching a DVD of "The Devil's Advocate" that the truth has suddenly clicked that Mike Ritson is in fact evil incarnate and the living embodiment of the role which Al Pacino played with such aplomb.

The guy lulled me into a false sense of security by appearing on the scene in the early 70's and bugging me to play records - an early indication of the kind of sublimal mind games the guy was up to back then. Little did I know I know this was part of his long-term game-plan. I then managed to keep out of his way for the next 25 years before I realised he'd cropped up with with a Northern Soul magazine called 'Manifesto'. Little did we know back then how prophetic the title would be!

In the meantime I next bumped into him when the two of you wrote "The In Crowd" and Mike first located me by nefarious methods (he rang Neil Rushton and got my number) and then proceeded to interogate me mercilessly under the guise of interviewing me for his so-called book, henceforth to be known as 'Project Orange'. He plied me with alcohol throughout the 'interviews' and then accused ME of trying to encourage HIM to drink - a typical ploy from a criminal mastermind.

'Project Orange' was a perfect cover for this undercover svengali to interrogate key members of the Northern Soul movement in order to understand the mindset of Northern Soul devotees so he could take over the scene for his own pernacious desires. I'm not surprised you got suckered into it mate - he had us all fooled didn't he?

I've since done some more research and found out that 'The Master' is currently running his evil empire from a caravan in the South Of France - presumably to try and fool people into thinking that he's actually not that well-off and actually chooses to live in a hot-box for several weeks every year!

Thanks again for the warning Stuart.

I'd better alert Soul Sam and Fish before they carry out any more attrocities in the name of The Master.......

I agree too but if someone has a pop at @ a load of associates and friends and says they have never contributed to the scene, then should there not be a right of reply?

I didn't even get involved until Paul Sadot levelled his accusations @ Manifesto and I thought someone should respond. I was just about to shoot a few things back too from the calls and PM's I've had about other situations that concern Paul but I'm happy enough to get back to the music mate. I have noticed a certain aspect that keeps cropping up on this forum....

People make 'semi-inflammatory' posts (for want of a better term!) and then winge when other people take an opposing position. Mr Trouble seems to like to sound off then screams for the moderator when somebody susses him. Personally, I've enjoyed this last page - a fine example of post modernist cyberhumour lol!

I'd just like to say I posted quite one-dimensionally and without any agenda, to respond to the challenge to find the grammatical errors and perhaps have a go at editing the magazine. Maybe we should start an off-topic post about spelling and grammar; I'm particularly irked by the pernicious prevalence of mis-spelled fliers, the most recent atrocity being 'St Ive's' with an incorrect possessive apostrophe. (aka 'Grocer's disease').

Secondly I'd like to add that I'm disappointed and a bit saddened by a lot of what I've seen on this thread. What James posted originally was a contentious but nonetheless fair point on a specific subject. I've seen it degenerate into a public airing of private grievances between people I either like(d) or respect(ed) or both, and watched people insult each other from behind a computer screen (NOT the same as 'face-to-face'!) and I feel sorry for those involved in any way. There is a lot of pain, bitterness and tension being expressed here. I wish I could say some yoga all round would probably help, but I think this would be optimistic. This would not happen face-to-face; one of the unfortunate side-effects of internet communication is the loss of conscience with regards to the effect one is having on another person through the words one writes.

I take no sides in this argument and I know that my opinion isn't at all important to those involved. Other people's opinions never are, to such people, unless the opinions are those of critics, promotors, purchasors, or others who may influence the success of their product. It's been very interesting to watch. I've seen enough, thanks.

Yeah mate...

And guess who is sending one word insult PM'S to people (from behind THE PM CURTAIN, behind a computer screen???? Go on, guess who...LOLno.gif

I think it is very clear as to why there is discord on this particular thread. When something is started in a spirit of hatred, it very rarely progresses into a positive atmosphere.

Whilst JAMES might have a semblance of a point, it is clearly buried within a personal hatred and agenda. Being that this crap revolves around somebody who has been doing the same things basically for over 30 years, it seems rather pointless. The idea that somebody as headstrong as IAN LEVINE is ever going to change his beliefs or practises, right or wrong, because somebody like JAMES TROUBLE attacks him is laughable in the extreme. Secondly, the sniping at 'Manifesto' seems spiteful and over the top. If people think they can do better, it's a free country and they can always start up their own magazine....

Then again, it is always far easier to snipe from the sidelines.

Which forum rule have I broken?

Chorleysoul calls me a homphobe and a racist and I am not allowed to defend myself? I quite clearly state that if had wanted to use words that would would offend, I would. But I didn't, I used the word sycophant, in other words bum licking.

syc·o·phant (sibreve.gifkprime.gifschwa.gif-fschwa.gifnt, simacr.gifprime.gifkschwa.gif-)n. A servile self-seeker who attempts to win favor by flattering influential people.[Latin symacr.gifcophanta, informer, slanderer, from Greek sumacr.gifkophantemacr.gifs, informer, from sumacr.gifkon phainein, to show a fig (probably originally said of denouncers of theft or exportation of figs) : sumacr.gifkon, fig + phainein, to show; see bhamacr.gif-1 in Indo-European roots.]syclprime.gifo·phanprime.giftic (-fabreve.gifnprime.giftibreve.gifk), syclprime.gifo·phanprime.gifti·cal (-tibreve.gif-kschwa.gifl) adj.syclprime.gifo·phanprime.gifti·cal·ly adv.

Ok. If you want to play up the melodramatics, thats down to you. The facts are simple. I did not 'call' you a 'homophobe' or a 'racist'. You will not find those words anywhere on this thread apart from within your own contribution above.

What I asked you to do was refrain from making what I believed to be underhand, sneering jibes be they aimed sexually/racially or socially.

The use of the above in a grouping were simply as an example of the type of insults that should be unacceptable on public forums.

I most certainly do not believe you to be a racist. I dont think you are a homophobic. I do think you deliberately left a certain phrase in your text, as a sly dig at LEVINE, for whom you clearly hold an irrational hatred. It is impossible to prove whether you intended such a meaning, but the fact that it could be construed that way, by anybody, indicates - at the very least - poor judgement on your behalf.

The laws in this country protect people against 'deliberate' discrimination or crucially 'indeliberate'. Take a bit of advice. When you are going to attack somebody learn to cover your own back.

And if you want to insult me, dont do it privately. I'll introduce myself next time I see you in London.
