Steve W Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 Love Barbra Acklin, Am I the same girl. Like the new Joss Stone track but would I if I didnt know where sample came from. link Trouble is its not just a sample its nearly the complete chorus, she has a good voice but to have your first album written and backed up by the cream of miami muscians I am afraid the only way is down get to philly and detroit quick girl for another 2 albums
Pete S Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 I thought it was sampled off the Swing Out Sister version

Guest Trevski Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 Saw Joss Stone performing with James Brown on last nights Jonathan Ross show. Painful or what! Ok she has a decent voice, I suppose, but its nearer to Janis Joplin than anything else, and Janis Joplin ain't soul! She may mature into something better, but Patti Austin could whip the living daylights out of her at the same age!

Joss Stone - nothing special, bordering on being a bit crap. Don't believe the hype!
Pete S Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 What utter rubbish. You don't know talent when you see it (unless it's black I suppose). Janis Joplin was just a shouter. The more I see and hear Joss Stone the better she gets. Best female soul singer in the world today

The more I see and hear Joss Stone the better she gets. Best female soul singer in the world today link Thing is most of the best talent is from black people, they have more passion in their songs too! (and Im not being racist!) To give credit to Joss Stone, firstly she needs the right songs, not what she is told to sing and also for an 18 year old, not bad really!
Simsy Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 What utter rubbish. You don't know talent when you see it (unless it's black I suppose). Janis Joplin was just a shouter. Simsy Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 The more I see and hear Joss Stone the better she gets. Best female soul singer in the world today link Aretha Franklin is still alive
Pete S Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Aretha Franklin is still alive link She's always been the worlds most overrated singer. I'm not saying Joss Stone is better than Aretha Franklin - just that Aretha Franklin isn't that great to begin with.
Pete S Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Saw Joss Stone performing with James Brown on last nights Jonathan Ross show. Painful or what! Ok she has a decent voice, I suppose, but its nearer to Janis Joplin than anything else, and Janis Joplin ain't soul! She may mature into something better, but Patti Austin could whip the living daylights out of her at the same age! link I don't know what James Brown was trying to do but it was a joke of a performance, if he'd been on at a local working mens club he would have had bottles thrown at him. An absolute joke and a farce. If it wasn't for Joss Stone saving his arse the producers would have cut the show early. Totally embarrassing and the bloke should retire now before he makes himself look a bigger fool than he already has.
Simsy Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I don't know what was wrong with James Brown on that show. Perhaps he didn't want to over do it, so as to let Joss Stone Shine. Either that or he's lost it. Interesting topic - best female soul lead vocalist. People at Atlantic/Stax said Aretha sang like a bird and she did. Also has the title of queen of soul. There are no cracking northern numbers by AF Although powerful and tuneful I don't know that she is necessarily the greatest. Neither are some of the other candidates that spring to mind - Dianna Ross, Timi Yuro etc. I'm thinking maybe Brenda Holloway, or someone of that ilk that sits comfortably with the northern-ness. Tough one this

Tough one this link I personally dont think there is a best, each and every record has its own merits or shortfalls, its all down to personal taste. We tend to forget that Northern Soul is a music genre that only exsits to northern soulies, to every one else its just old soul records, old disco records, etc. with such a large array of artists to choose from from so many decades of music, how can we pick one
jocko Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 What utter rubbish. You don't know talent when you see it (unless it's black I suppose). Janis Joplin was just a shouter. The more I see and hear Joss Stone the better she gets. Best female soul singer in the world today link How would you know, you hardly listen to soul music. I have to admit to reappraising my opinion of Joss Stone, after hearing her live recently (on tv anyway,) no doubt she has a good, although not great, voice, and she does understand the dynamics of soul singing, However it was all put into perspective when one of James "Shambles" Brown backing singers, came forward to sing just a few lines, she was much more powerfull than Joss, far more soulful and held the note far better, we will probably never know her name and she will probably never record her own record, and she probably isnt even the greatest backing singer in the world, hmm. Yours reflectively Jock

You're right. So who'd be in the top three then? AF, DR,TY???
Guest miff Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 So very hard to pick just 3 Betty Lavette Barbra Mercer Freda Payne PP Arnold Aretha & Erma Franklin Sugar Pie Desanto But if you ask me next week the list will have changed Betty Lavete - Your Turn To Cry - Is my all time fave soul record, and has been since i first heard it, prior to that it was Aretha Franklin - Angel please dont ask me to name a fave northern track I just carnt do it
Guest Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Bettye Lavette is still one of the best live performers around and could blow Ms Stone off the stage as could Laura Lee who can still sing her socks off. You can follow that up with a host of ladies who are still around and can do the biz - Betty Harris - new album soon as has Bettye, Ann Peebles, Mable John, Shirley Brown, Dorothy Moore - her new album which is self produced is fantastic. Also Jackie Johnson and Sheba Wright-Potts of the younger generation could blow her away as well. Colin Dilnot
Pete S Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 How would you know, you hardly listen to soul music. link I know everything about music, have you not worked that out yet
Ted Massey Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Joss Stone fantastic only 18 gonna get better and better sorry to be sexist but what a looker too
Mandy Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Joss Stone fantastic only 18 gonna get better and better sorry to be sexist but what a looker too link Agree with you there Ted. An 18 year old who has got years to improve and hopefully she will - great voice but not a lot of soul at the moment. I love her latest single but did remind me of something else! I wish I could've sung like that at her age ... wish I could now at 40!!!!
Guest ShaneH Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 dont expect her to continue the soul route though. she had a britney type album already completed in case the soul thing didnt work. she is owned by the big boys now and they will play her however they want now. shane

sister dawn Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Maxine Brown.....enough said! Regards - Mark Bicknell. link Joss stone.... spent long period of time working close to those connected with motown to record her first album... the soul sessions... stated that she wanted to "keep it real" however the big boys of the commercial industry decided better with the new album hence all the present knocks that she has had re this album.... dont know bout you lot but fed up with being ripped off by the commercial industry when 80/90 per cent of the album is released as singles.... very creative or what.....
Bigsoulman Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Hate to say it but Joss Stone is a better soul singer than Dusty was link Thats bollox Pete and you know it
Bigsoulman Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Dusty Springfield vastly over-rated if you ask me link Nonsense Chalks, have to totally disagree with you and Pete S, vastly underrated more like, a British institution

I'm not saying Joss Stone is better than Aretha Franklin - just that Aretha Franklin isn't that great to begin with. link Have to agree there. Hundreds of relative unknowns with far better lungs who never got the same crack at the whip. Talented yes, but not half as much as the tens of people who were denied the exposure she was afforded.

Stuart Bower Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I`d say I`m open minded about all music but I`ve never heard any of Joss Stone`s so called "music".. Don`t much want to..don`t much need to.. Like most pop music today, it`s probably unoriginal anyway. Thank you and good night!
Pete S Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I concur who's the male version by - Tony Williams? link Yes, ex Platters, on Fontana or it Phillips. can't remember, just know it's BAD
Guest Dan Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 phillips i think? not the greatest song, mind you, but birdie's is just an awesome vocal effort
