It was great to hear it but does it mean THE END??!! He,s been collecting northern soul for years, what is it that bothers you, that you think if he,s playing it you,ll be surrounded by fans of supermarket sweep at a nighter, because my friend ,you probably already are.Or is it that rare soul isnt as underground as it once was , but your attuned to listening to it so you can hear it everywhere from morrisons supermarket in dukinfield to glastonbury festival over the pyramid stage P.A . Even further afield to wat was the biggest nightclub on the planet , Privilege in Ibiza , i,d heard stuff i,d only previously heard at a soul music night.Maybe he was just pointing out lyrically what he loves about the music,"just to you and nobody else".
Guest Jimmy Scriv Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I bumped into Eric Knowles at the filming of Antiques Roadshow in Blackpool. I mentioned the Frank Wilson auction and he said that he will have to get his Northern Soul records down from his loft. I wonder how many records he's got? Perhaps he can do an Antigues roadshow Soul Show after Songs of Praise on a Sunday

Rob Wigley Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 He did a Soul Show on Radio Nottingham "Before he was famous" he is long quoted as saying Timi Yuro is his favourite ever record, he plays it at home whilst doing the dishes and singing into the "Dish Mop" Good old Dale ! R & K

paup-ine Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Isn't it funny how some people perceive famous people, as if they were different in likes and dislikes! (They even go to the loo as well ) P

Mike Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 lets turn this old chestnut around how about self proclaimed soul fan only plays one soul 45
slimharpo Posted August 10, 2009 Author Posted August 10, 2009 I was in Martin Koppell's warehouse in Toronto in 1987 when he took a call from Steve Davis enquiring about some rare Deep Soul item. According to Martin he was a regular buyer. Going back to Dale & Radio 2. Maybe this is the Establishment's revenge for Soul Sam playing Lulu or similar?
Guest Matt Male Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Going back to Dale & Radio 2. Maybe this is the Establishment's revenge for Soul Sam playing Lulu or similar? Like Mike said, this is an old chestnut, it's well known Dale Winton likes northern soul, he's played northern on his radio show since he started and he's a good friend of Ian Levine and he was there at the first Rocket night seven years ago. True he does seem obsessed with Timi Yuro, but nothing new here.

Kenny Carter - Showdown being one, this weekend Now that is a surprise John Incidently I've a mate (not a soulie) who used to phone me up & tell me to turn on Radio 2 because paul o'grady was about to play some northern soul . Curiosity of course got the better of me & i sat through Frankie Valli You're ready now, Heaven must have sent you, Newbeats bread & butter & similar & then bizarely one week played Andantes Like a nightmare......& mostly it was! Week or so later he played The Sweetest Feeling by Edwin Starr, I have to say I was shocked, not only that I hadn't realised Edwin had recorded the record but that he did it in a Jackie Wilson style I've since given up car crash radio & now count the dots in the pattern on my wallpaper on a sunday afternoon instead Edited August 10, 2009 by SHSDave

Steve Davis used to attend Soul Essence but apparently he stopped going because he couldn't afford to be wrongly associated with the "other" side of the soul scene. Mark C
Dave Rimmer Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 lets turn this old chestnut around how about self proclaimed soul fan only plays one soul 45 Let's turn it round again How do you know he only played one Soul 45 ? Were you listening.............
Guest Carl Dixon Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I would have thought that any airplay, off any format would have been the appropriate respect for those involved with the creation of the song and master recording in the first place. A nice royalty may have been generated for the writers that hopefully will filter back to whoever, wherever. Just as important, somebody might go and buy the CD or digital download, further generating royalties for the label (that second hand 45 rpms do not, and quite rightly so) and to maybe distribute to performers if that was the deal or even invest in other new and upcoming artists who have as much talent as somebody from say 50 years ago. Even better, some film producer might hear it and want to position it in a movie, where it will end up as a soundtrack item for sale on a CD compliation somewhere and win an oscar for being part of the movies succes. Or even an artist might hear it and want to cover the song, which would give enormous respect to the writers and music infrastructure surrounding the release in the first place. It would also be a mark of respect to those who follow with conviction, rare soul and those releases not available for sale anywhere, as clearly they have encouraged the DJ to play it, due to its following etc. I don't think it's the end, but the beginning.
Mike Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Let's turn it round again How do you know he only played one Soul 45 ? Were you listening............. lets turn it backwards if he regularly played soul 45s would this thread be here were you listening.............
Guest Dave Turner Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I was in Martin Koppell's warehouse in Toronto in 1987 when he took a call from Steve Davis enquiring about some rare Deep Soul item. According to Martin he was a regular buyer. Going back to Dale & Radio 2. Maybe this is the Establishment's revenge for Soul Sam playing Lulu or similar? Yeah, Steve Davis has a large soul collection and used to have his own Soul radio show back in the 80s. I did hear that at one time he used to regularly send John Anderson (Soul Bowl) a blank cheque. From the net--------- What else do you listen to? I've switched from the jazz funk era of the Eighties back to my roots and am listening to Seventies soul again. It was a great time for music and anybody who hasn't delved into that era is missing out. Everyone has a special relationship with their record collection - it's just that mine is bigger than most. I've never listened to all my records and I never will. I couldn't tell you how many I have because they fill an entire room and are all over my house. When did you start seriously collecting? During the mid-Eighties when I used to listen to Robbie Vincent's show on a Saturday night. I blame him for what's happened to me since. He played records I couldn't get in my local shop and which I found out were only available on seven-inch singles. I was more into vocal stuff at the time and began collecting original 45s made for jukeboxes. All of the artists were unknown to me but I went mad collecting them. Are you still discovering new stuff? All the time. There are new artists out there making quite progressive stuff that is both fascinating and challenging to listen to. Soul music has been hijacked these days. R'n'B can mean anything now; it's been completely bastardised. I listen to proper R'n'B. Also, I've just bought an iPod so I'm listening to more music than ever.
Kev Cane Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Didn't Steve Davis finance A Soul Mag called 'Voices From The Shadows' in the 80's to stop it going under? Thats correct Phil, he was an avid reader of the mag and Rod Dearlove, if I remember rightly had warned that the mag would cease to exist as it was to expensive to produce, on reading this Steve contacted Rod and contributed to future issues, which I must add were a must read and is greatly missed. Steve Davis also used to attend Thorne (Canal Tavern) where as a claim to fame I advised him to purchase a copy of the Visitors-My love is ready and waiting, telling him it would be the best £6 he would ever spend, £6 eh, the good old days Kev

Guest garysoul82 Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Radio 2 djs always seem to play a bit of northern now and again.probably memories from their own youth. Brian matthews on sat mornings always plays 2or3 rare soul tracks, recently kenny gamble, patti &the emblems, tony middleton. A brummie dj on talksport did 4 hours the other week on northern soul in the late hours. who remembers stuart marconis allnighter shows on R2.
Alison H Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 wasnt snookers steve davis a big fan as well I was sat on the same table as him many years ago at the Canal Tavern in Thorne & he's well into his soul - not that I got from him... he hardly uttered a word all night. Had I being a bit older and not the shy girl I was then I would have MADE him speak to me ! (chuckle-cos I still cant get my emoticons working) & maybe later he could have shown me how he potted his balls so well (sorry - couldnt resist) Ooh also a couple of my mates run a modern do over at the Chesire Lounge in Lymm and thats part owned by Tony Knowles & he is often there on the night. I dont think he is into his soul like Steve was/is but its still nice to see him down there. What is it with me & snooker players ..... why cant I bump into some footie players !! Al x

jocko Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Butch, Kitch, Marco Santucci and a few others all play rare Northern Soul, they also play fresh Northern soul, lots rare and some not so rare but mostly quality, some would say they are as good as it can get when on form, they never seem to get mentioned on here, certainly not in as revered tones as radio two and TV "stars" seem to in connection with the music, its a funny old world isn't it........ Re Steve Davis I think he may be on here, he is definitely on EMS, I think you may be surprised at the records he has that would be called Northern, some pretty big ticket numbers some of which he may be currently selling, I think his role in Voices was as co-director, possibly even co-owner of mag and record list, not sure about now. Great taste as most gingers do have....
funkyfeet Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Steve Davis, use to attend black music record fairs regularly in the 80's bought a number of tunes off me at these events. I remember once in Brixton, shortly after the riots, he was at my stall when a fight started between a punter and a stall holder, Steve quickly handed some money over to me and made a quick exit, it was in the middle of the world championship and he obviously couldn't afford to get caught up in it, especially as he was the world's number one at the time.
Guest pauldicko Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 HE'S JUST PLAYED MARVIN GAYE - WHERE ARE YOU GOING - AWESOME TUNE WHAT EVER GENRE YOU PUT IT IN. DICKO
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Would that really matter if a DJ on radio 2 is playing Northern soul. I listen to Heart sometimes and although a lot of it is 80's onwards i have heard them play Jackie Wilson - I Get The Sweetest Feeling and i am like oh this is good. If any Northern is played by Dalr Winton or whoever and it's 25 miles, Girl Across the Street or whatever i am happy for it to be appriceated by such people
Guest Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I think I was about 17 when I lived in Newark and had Radio Trent on and Dale Winton played The Majestics and I couldn't believe it........20 years ago....seems like yesterday Jonathan

Agree with you there Billy.I'm on the road a fair bit and R2 is an 'ear friendly station' I used to hate Wogan....but do you know what I've turned into one of his bloody TOG's. But I always have a good CD in ready just push a button and hey presto Soul for a few minutes before going back to the compulsive drivel and smut...LOL.plenty of other Dj's (presenters?)to pass away the hours and NS does get played sometime....and as I said a good CD ready does the business when needed
