Willie Wade - ''When Push Comes To Shove' and the flip 'Come Into My World' - Nite Life one of the daddies in this style.

The Inverts - 'Time Will Change' - Broadway, sublime record.

Lovelace Watkins - 'Dreams' - Sue

Ray Pollard - 'The Drifter' - United Artists, one of the classic down tempo tunes, awesome.

Jimmy Gilford - 'Heartbreaker' - Solid Hitbound, a dream of a record possibly my favorite in the down tempo style.

Harry Starr - 'Step Into My World' - End, awesome flip of 'Another Time, Another Place'.

The Exsaveyons - ''Somewhere' flip to 'I Don't Love You No More' - Smoke.

Johnny Newbag - 'Sweet Thing' - Port.

Jimmy Ricks - 'Oh What A Feeling' - Festival

Otis Clay - 'Tired Of Falling In (And Out Of) Love' - Onederful, never a better twenty quid will you spend, try finding a demo though took me years.

Flip to The Heartbreakers - 'I've Got To Face It' on Derby City 'How Do You Say Goodbye', talk about emotion, gut wrenching oh my god takes me to another place this one.

Flip to Johnny Moore 'Walk Like A Man on Date 'It's Just My Way Of Loving You' wow simply wow!

A few more upstairs but Mrs B. is still asleep lol will remind myself later of a few more, love this style, give me an armchair anyday.

The two that do it most for me:-

June Jackson "you're welcome"

Bob & Fred "i'll be on my way"

Kell Osborne :boxing: How can anyone not like this :elvis:

would you class Arin Demain "silent treatment" or Paris "sleepless nights" as a beat ballads?

Lenny Welch - Darling Take Me Back (better than Ray Pollard).

Though that said being a beat 'Ballad' they ought really to have a story rather than just be a slow(ish) paced record - so how about 'Can't Stop Looking For My Baby' by The Fantastic Four as a left field option. Or as I've just noticed Theola Kilgore - how about 'This Is My Prayer' - just slays me.

More pointless nomenclature really - how about a Crossover 60s Newie Beat Ballad.

Dave

PS Kell Osbourne? Quicksand? Sorry I absolutely detest it - it's like luke warm porridge.

no they are mid tempo, same as June Jackson, too quick for a ballad IMO.

Would you call a ballad mid tempo? I wouldn't. Beat Ballad to me is exactly what it says, a ballad with a beat bu slower tha mid tempo. Many of those listed are not what I would call a beat ballad, simply mid tempo.

Absolutely love em, always have; however, there does seem to be a stigma attached in some quarters i.e. amongst those who associate tempo singularly with quality and of course the debates continue to, erm, 'rage' sleep3.gif about what 'northern' is, what should be played, what's for chin strokers only etc etc etc ...

Personal faves include:

Ty Karim - all at once (Romark)

Everything else is second division after this IMHO but its a competetive league nonetheless ...

Don & Juan - the heartbreaking truth (Mala)

Linda & Vistas - he went away (Shrine)

Betty Turner - tell yourself a lie (Crescent)

Cheers

Phil

I am incredibly proud (yes proud, you tempo terrorists out there)to say I have played about 3/4 of these records on list so far in spots over year, mostly last hour at Allanton, when we had as many people as interested in the music as the beat!

Think there is a media thread out there somewhere specialising in these somewhere, worth reviving some time.

Only problem for me is where people mistake any big voice with a good soul singer and the genre becomes a bit blurry for me, but appreciate particularly with the Big City stuff the line is definitely blurred.

Tony Colton is one to add that I like to think I had some part in it making, after Dean Anderson obviously, but that is one that not sure has stood the test of time.

With you on that Jock, plenty of the tunes listed are worth plays, and there's a few that I regularly drop into sets. Don't hear too many down beat tunes played out nowadays which is a great shame 'cos plenty are far more soulful than some of the uptempo plays. It seems that Northern has become a term for uptempo 60's, and ok whilst the majority of Northern tunes are, Northern has always been far more of a broader church.

I'm also with Chalky, I'd describe quite a few of the tunes listed on the thread as mid-tempo........though to a lot of people Northern mid-tempo is now crossover g.gif .

As far as beat ballads go, here's some that do it for me......

Charades - Never Set Me Free - MGM

Vonda Marie - I Feel Complete - Phil LA of Soul

Tommy Collins - I Want To Thank You - Verve

Reginald Day - Lost Love - Midas

It Use To Be - Jimmy Burns & Fantastic Epics - Tip Top

I kind of know what you're saying abount black wannabe Dean Martin tunes, and there's been more than few of those played when people should have known better. It's a bit too simple a definition to say that beat ballads are all in that bag; how would you define a tune like Johnny Burton - Slave Girl, too slow to describe as mid-tempo, but it's a million miles away from a Dean Martin sound alike.
