I'm a big fan of the slow to mid tempo soul shuffler or 'beat ballad'.

I'm talking:

Lenny Welch - The Right to Cry

Maxine Brown - Not My Baby

Gene Chandler - Just Be True

Porgy and the Monarchs - If its for Real

Garland Green - Jealous Kinda Fella

Bobbie Smith - Walk on into my Heart

Marva Josie - Don't

Barbara Brown - Pity a Fool

Big Maybelle - Lord, What are you Doing to Me?

Dan Folger - Way of the Crowd

Eddie Holman - I'm Not Gonna Give Up

The Mad Lads - Did My Baby Call?

That kinda stuff.

Any suggestions for other tunes that I should be checking out that my float my boat?

Cheers y'all.

My suggestions are ;-

Deena Johnson -- Breaking Point

Judy Clay - My arms aren't strong enough ( plus an equally good B-side which is the original (?)of Johnny Taylor's unissued track - That's All)

B-side of Marie Knight - You lie so well ..... forgotten title!

Definately NOT slow and boring as others think!! Absolutely phenomenal ender type beat ballads....

I never really like the term beat ballads (prefer mid-tempo) but i suppose these are my favourites... if they are beat ballads. unsure.gif

The Magnificent Seven - Never Will I Make My Baby Cry

Barbara Lynn - This Is The Thanks I Get

The Commands - Hey It's Love

But the king of all is Buddy Smith - When You Lose The One You Love (magical)

I might be wrong but it's a sub-genre associated with Stafford mid tempo stuff.

I am incredibly proud (yes proud, you tempo terrorists out there)to say I have played about 3/4 of these records on list so far in spots over year, mostly last hour at Allanton, when we had as many people as interested in the music as the beat!

Think there is a media thread out there somewhere specialising in these somewhere, worth reviving some time.

Only problem for me is where people mistake any big voice with a good soul singer and the genre becomes a bit blurry for me, but appreciate particularly with the Big City stuff the line is definitely blurred.

Tony Colton is one to add that I like to think I had some part in it making, after Dean Anderson obviously, but that is one that not sure has stood the test of time.

Simply superb, haven't heard it played anywhere for 25 years + Still out of my price range as well despite being neglected by everyone.

Some nice tunes listed....except for Kell Osborne "Quicksand"; never understood what that's about. Feel much the same about it as Pete Smith does about Buddy Smith (which I think is superb). Ways, hows about:

Jerry Ganey "Just A Fool" (Verve)

Liz Lands "Don't Shut Me Out" (Onederful)

Ruby & The Romantics "Does He Really Care For Me"

Out of your price range?.........Didn't think it was that much to buy...Hard to find, sort of, but didn't think it was a LOT of money. But as you have said, a truly neglected tune.

a ballad but with a beat and slower than mid-tempo IMO. Many of those listed are what I'd class mid-tempo.

George Freeman - Down and Out and Bobby Bennett - Alone With My Tears two of the best IMO.

Yes i would say that is right...A lot of peeps seem to think Big production mid-tempo is a beat ballad. Like you have said, just below mid-tempo is as i have always thought to be a beat"ballad" (there's a clue there, tooohhoooo)
