Paul-s Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Without a doubt...thing is I'm not even looking at it from a Soul Lovers point of view but from a Film lovers point of view...you look at the great British films that have come out in the past few years and try to compare 'Soul Boy' against any of them and it comes up way short...ok you can say they were on a budget but i'm sure most British films are...Hold it up to something like 'This Is England' and it falls very short indeed in comparison...just because a film is on a shoestring does not mean you cannot get the best out of what you have...the subject matter is there...and i'm sure the film makers had good intentions...I just don't happen to think they pulled it off...perhaps others will see it differently. DEAD MANS SHOES was shot for around £800,000 and managed to get it right. If you have a good director, the budget becomes less important. If the Director hasn't got a clue, then no amount of money can help!
Paul-s Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Why do you think that the film company took the thread off soul source and youtube??? Was it because they did not want any clips showing at all or because of the negative feedback yesterday??? Thats my question? surely if they are proud of it, they would post clips everywhere to generate interest. Im mean a film is 90mins minimum! Surely they can select a decent segment from that? If they are in the film business, they should be used to both positive and negative feedback. But if they are proud and pleased with the product, it shouldn't make any difference?
Jumpinjoan Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I reckon it has to be something legal like the credits or the title. It can't be anything else. They are the professionals and know what they are doing
Kevinkent Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 (edited) Of course it could just be that with the film release imminent someone suddenly realised that the clip had the end credits showing "Coming soon -SOULED OUT" which we're told is no longer the films title. You lot didn't bother reading my last post then? Not NEGATIVE enough for ya? Edited August 10, 2009 by KevinKent
Jumpinjoan Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 You lot didn't bother reading my last post then? Not NEGATIVE enough for ya? I'm tempted to say not by a country mile but something tells me you'll take that seriously

Kevinkent Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 wtf do you mean by "you lot" wtf do you mean "wtf do you mean"? Multiquotes is still a hit and miss thing with me, so I meant anyone who was speculating on the reason for the removal of the clips since my previous post - which I quoted as it was at the bottom of the previous page. Not sure if that's what you mean though.

Kevinkent Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Now I feel like the smelly kid at school - once I come on a thread everyone disappears! I did think that the wrongly titled end credits for the film clips may have been the reason they were removed - but as no one from Ipso-facto has come on here to verify this, I'm likely to be wrong again. I've also heard someone (who reckons that the film will be out Aug/Sept) state that they're gonna increase the number of their nights to cater for demand from the newbies. Is this happening/likely to happen anywhere else? -Kev.
Paul-s Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 You lot didn't bother reading my last post then? Not NEGATIVE enough for ya? Hardly rocket science to change that mate.
Jumpinjoan Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 (edited) Hardly rocket science to change that mate. Exactly. They posted it, so surely they would have realised the mistake? Not to mention the fact that they didn't make the film for us so why on earth would they care what we think? Edited August 11, 2009 by jumpinjoan
Billywhizz Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Hardly rocket science to change that mate. hi paul i have'nt seen the off cutts of the film,i have filled some paper work in, surprised they did'nt ask you to get involved as you have been there and done it,Billy.
Professorturnups Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Hope the film actually comes out - been promised a ticket for the premiere. Although knowing my luck it will be Jordan on the red carpet and not Megan Fox! Mark C

Hi Billy, i actually wrote a letter of complaint to their funders a few years ago, after i had read the script and realised that they were just trying to squeeze a crap love story into the 'Northern Soul' genre! It seemed to me to be a cynical attempt at cashing in on the 60's revival thing! SO, they were never going to use me.ha! I haven't seen it, but, as i said, that original script was pants and worse. The description of the clip...pills falling out of pockets etc, just sounds like a joke, but i will wait and see. Although, i would imagine, if they believed in their product, it would be posted everywhere to generate an audience? best paul

Sorry to go off topic here Paul, but I just wondered did anyone ever film a performance of O.U.A.T.I.W. play? It's quite a few years since I saw it, and I would love to see it again. DVD?

A bit further off topic (although not that much different from the thread title)...... I've heard many a rumour that there is going to be a feature length film made on the back of Function At The Junction. Similar voices mentioned a few known Soul Source members and well know scenesters would be involved in the making of the film, but teh film since run into funding issues. Not sure if these rumours are true. However i do know that an actor friend of mine went to an audition for a soul themed film (not Souled Out / Soul Boy whatever its called) where he was taught some acrobatic dance moves by Capawera (is that even how you spell it) experts. Anyone shed any light?

Which makes sense because any film about Wigan would have to have actors and dancers who knew about wearing Caps in a 70s style.....the auditonee would have to be a CAPAWERA! It all makes sense....

You might just be right there Paul, it probably is. I obviously didnt make the comment in brackets about me not knowing how to spell the word clear enough. Should it be capoeira?? The word capawera did crop up on my google search when trying to find the correct spelling, and linked to the same subject matter. So does anyone, Paul included, know anything about this said film or auditions?

Guest MBarrett Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Without a doubt...thing is I'm not even looking at it from a Soul Lovers point of view but from a Film lovers point of view Beeks Like you I attended one of the "previews" - 6 months or so ago now. I said up front on here that I quite enjoyed it. Certainly a low-budget feel to it - but you can argue that that suited the atmosphere of the time. But what I really want to ask is what did other people at your preview think of it? Presumably you stayed for the discussion bit at the end. There were almost no negative comments at the one I was at. One person who had obviously been round the soul scene since the early days said their only criticism is that it should have been longer. What comments - good, bad, or indifferent came out of your discussion group? MB

MB Interesting point Mr Barrett...to be fair I didn't stay for the discussion group...i'd come straight from work so didn't even get time for a bite to eat before the viewing so by the time it was finished I was famished...though I did fill in the questionaire I had a chat with a few people outside after though whilst having a cigarette and they were pretty much of the same opinion as me Don't get me wrong MB...I'm not one of the haters on here who were slagging it before it was even seen...I REALLY wanted it to be good...and I left really disappointed...perhaps I built it up too much in my head...who knows...but like i've said earlier in the thread...compared to other british films out there it really is poor and the script/story is cringworthy...just feel it could have been so much better
Simsy Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Taken from Winstanley homepage .. Hasn't he got that rather badly wrong Paul?

Malc Burton No.....Maybe Mick has, but he would sell his Granma for tuppence and would probably , like Bolton Octagon , make it into a crap musical

Hasn't he got that rather badly wrong Paul? YES..total bullshit as you can run a check on films in production and that aint one of em! Also, i will put in an intellectual property claim if it does try to move forward, as, even in the published script, my stage directions and musical score are used aswell as ideas and elements throughout the script....that will pull any backers out and delay a film. (already had legal advice on this!) AND ITS THE TRUTH...Russ is a money grabbing slug with no soul and even the above quote is mis leading...the music for Bolton was ALL live with a blue eyed band and called 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN WIGAN LIVE'....in fact im gonna call the t--t and tell him. Anyoone have a number.? hes making out he did the music for my play called 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN WIGAN'.. Edited August 18, 2009 by paul-s

spirit Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Is this what you are looking for? https://www.soul-sour..._1entry825504 From that thread: Auditions for the hundreds of dance-extras that will be needed for the high energy scenes will take place in September in Wigan's Grand Arcade. I wonder...........is this BIG screen production really going to happen or is it a cynical piece of marketing for this years Wigan Anniversary to be held in the Grand Arcade in September? I didn't go, but was told by people who did there weren't any auditions or film company present. In which case 'a cynical piece of marketing' is not strong enough. 'A manipulative lie' would be more apt. To be fair, a dance competition was recorded on a mobile phone and put on youtube, perhaps that's what he meant by 'immortalised on film', or maybe the budget slipped a bit.
Paul-s Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 RW is on facebook Paul got it thanks and spoke..all cleared up. found this review of the DISCO experience that Russ provides...proper 'Heart Of Soul'. Very Disappointed Date was changed 6 weeks ago and so was contacted to inform and said that this was fine. The night came and no dj turned up. When we finally got hold of Russ Winstanley he did finally come out himself but arrived around 9.30pm and then his equipment wouldn't work it ended up around 10.15pm before we got any music, and there was no lighting. And then he had the nerve to ask for the full amount for less than 2 hours work.
