I can't comment on the rest of the film as I have only seen that one clip.

But 'a bit on the cringeworthy side' it ain't... it's a cringe-fest

That said, it is only a film at the end of the day, but why do they always have to make such an arse of it.

:P:)whistling.gif ....well...well well...not saying anymore on the subject...xxxxx

I heard that there was filming done at a soul niter in Stoke some time last year with the intention of releasing a film regarding northern soul.

Does anybody know if it is finished, when it will be hitting the screen, what line the film will take ie documentary etc.

I also seen a stage show Once Upon a time in Wigan Casino a few years back in Coventry, excellent show, tunes and dancing. I thought it shown what life was all about back then, anyody else see it when it toured the UK

the film is due to show at major cinamas there is a story to it set in the 70s of course.my son paul jnr walker and some of his mates had parts in it also i saw the play you are talking about only four actors in it but they were fantastic it created a true atmosphere of the time and they were proberbly not even born when the casino opened its doors for the first time(myself and ricky warburton at the front of the que) cheers brian walker

Hiya Brian,Im going to reserve judgement on the film---,knew Paul was in it,and he CAN dance------------saw Once upon a time in Wigan at the Lowry and thought it was superb------and It really tickled me that Hutch was on the advertising poster,he is the most un- assuming guy you could meet, and was a little bit embarrased!

When the pills fall out of all of his orifices does the bloke get trampled to death and kicked shite out of?

If not then it must be bollox

The alarm clock looked authentic I thought.

I missed the Clips but the scene where the pills fall all over the place reminds me of my first trip to the Casino. A group of us had travelled up from Norwich on a National Express coach which took all day to get there. Can remember feeling absolutely shattered at about 2am so when this guy runs passed dropping capsules everywhere I gobbed a couple, and being a very naive 17 year old thought that should do the trick.

Next thing I know it's 7.45 and 3 Before 8 is about to start....

Two blokes started fighting.

Then one of the blokes calls the other one a crap dancer.

They then start to have a 'dance off'.

One of them does a bit of floor work.. then the other.

One of them mis-judges his footwork and ends up falling flat on his face.

Then.. yes you've got it.. a load of pills come flying out of the top of his vest, the sleeve of his vest, the waist band of his trousers, his socks, his ears, his eyes, his nose...

Now Joan after having read that I think I would have felt downright embarrassed had I seen that clip...sounds about as far removed from reality as you can possibly get...except of course the quantity of pills...although in reality they'd have been long gone...necked or sold

Dance-off indeed :boxing::lol:thmbdn.gif

Well Liam, assuming I'm "one of the usual suspects" I think you're being a tad sensitive with hate comments even bearing in mind some comments.. You and others enjoyed the time you spent on set and good luck to you. I have no ill will towards the makers or anybody else, but anyone who sees this as some sort of homage to the scene in the 70's is totally missing the point. I took the p*ss because of the genre. ie hackneyed sterotypical Northerners, with a pretend political background with hooliganism thrown in because things like Football Factory (but not Green Street 2:rolleyes: ) are popular. The Northern Soul element has just been dropped in because they've done Football, Brass Bands and Ballet. Mods and Teddy Boys have been covered so how about NS, especially as Corrie have done a storyline on it. But, its the same story thoughout every film of its type.

Low budget, unrealistic story line, despite possibly realistic dance scenes - did most people clap above their head though? - bleak and well - Northern.

I'm not upset that they've done it, not bothered that it probably won't be that realistic and not bothered that it may bring a few rubberneckers in for a while its just a tired old cliche of a story. But imo, if anybody thinks this will bring in a lot of youngsters who'll stick it out I'd suggest they would be mistaken. especially when they see that 90% or more are their parents age.

Someone thinks they can make money out of it, good luck to them.

To be fair Steve, i think Liam's comments were perhaps more aimed at the guy who said he hated the film (without seeing it i might add), and the people involved with it. Also advising those people that they should be ashamed of themselves.

Fair play though, you both have your own opinions - and you should definitely think about a career in script writing, one of the funniest things ive seen on here!!

I for one hope that it might get some youngsters involved. Us youngsters got involved at some point, and the music / people keeps us here. Maybe some young people will get bitten by the bug, come along, and like it enough to stick at it, who knows

Yes that would be great.

But when we first started going to nighters did any of the people who had been going for years give a back drop if we stuck with it?

And did they worry about us keeping the scene going in the years to come? Did they fig

Anyway, at least they used the original music in that clip that I saw.

Well apart from the synthesised breaks they added for dramatic effect to go with the slow motion dance off laugh.gif

Good point Joan.

When I started going to the Casino as a kid, I hung around with a predominantly older crowd and I was the youngest. The upshot of that was that they introduced me to people who they had met from around the country, who tended to be their age. From that point of view it was a bit insular for a while but then I started to meet people not only my age but also older and younger, independently of them, and so my friendship circle widened.

I found that eventually some of the older Casino'ites tailed off for various reasons and of course the younger ones eventually became the older ones.

Personally I never gave a thought to the age thing in terms of the longevity of the scene as I never had that much foresight (or sense come to think of it) back in the day cos in my young and immature mind I simply lived for "today" and in fact I never imagined that my niter days would ever constitute more than a passing phase and certainly never saw myself as being still attached to the scene in one form or another in let's say my more "mature" years.

The only age-related aspect I do remember from back then has a non-controversial and a controversial aspect to it in that whilst some of the older ones were quite happy to mingle with others, irrespective of age, some of them seemed to resent the presence of the younger ones and either took the pee out of them (divs, plastics etc) or bemoaned the fact that by their very existence the scene was becoming far too commercialised and this was a damaging feature for an underground scene. I remember being at Wigan the night they filmed This England and my only complaint was that it was too light and being a creature of the night I like the dark side of it wicked.gif...for me the ageism thing never came into it...after all we were all wet behind the ears at some stage in our lives and usually when we first started out on the scene.

So you see, thankfully I am one of those from the non-controversial ageism camp thumbup.gif

Will be interested to see what the films like..

I hope its pretty good but i just have a feeling that the low budget will work against it as they have to cut many corners....

Not long to wait now for release i guess...

Why speculate, just give it a chance...

After release i am sure this forum can eclipse any Levine thread ten times over with feedback

The trouble with some folk though is that they will moan/ bitch whatever the film is like.... They were just born to moan..

Why do you think that the film company took the thread off soul source and youtube???

Was it because they did not want any clips showing at all or because of the negative feedback yesterday???

If its shite then some will have to hide, the tin hat aint big enough :lamsey:

In taking part in Function at the Junction i ran the same risk, i am just glad that the end result was liked on the whole... I could have been looking for another scene/ new friends and a change of ID...

The big soul gamble will be over soon...

Certain big time promoters will be hoping that it opens the floodgates and all niters will be staged in Wembley stadium... shades.gif

Not long to wait... I can see some already setting up the gallows and booking a front seat for the public floggings..

I went to the test screening...the film was shite...but not in the way you think...it was just a piss poor movie...the soul in it is pretty adequate for a target audience of non chin stroking types...it's the general script and acting I thought was bollocks...i'm suprised they didn't get one of the big guns of British film to direct like Shane Meadows...reckon that would have been quality...but overall it was shoddy...maybe it will be better when it comes out...but unless there is a total script reworking it's highly improbable...the danceoff at the end is the one highlight for all the wrong reasons...pure comedy...was expecting Patrick Swayze to come flying in to have an uprock with Kevin Bacon...ah well...save that for the sequel ;-)

I'm all for youngsters coming along, enjoying it, hearing the music and staying, so the scene carries on and on. Trouble (no pun intended tongue.gif ) is, I don't think that sort of exposure will lead to that, more likely ridicule imo. Because its just another remake of a tired, cliched genre, but this time with NS as the background, I was afraid that it would be poor. Interesting to read Beeks post, which to some extent bears out what I thought.

after a thread advertising for extras the director came on soul source last year and gave everyone a ticking off for having a laugh and a bit of banter on "his" thread about his project . the only people "moaning" stevie , as far as i remmember , were the people from ipsofacto (the film company).

as for "negative feedback" what if the films crap , what then ? do we all pretend it isnt ?

Hi Steve,

If you'd seen the clip you would be cringing. Function at the Junction it definitely was not!

Anyway, my main gripe about this film, albeit a big one  , was that they used the original music.

Going by the clip I saw yesterday that was indeed the case. But that was just one scene so only time will tell.

As for them removing the clip because of negative feedback on here?

I must say that surprised me a bit. But only because they didn't take a blind bit of notice of what anyone said on here when they were making the film.

Maybe if they had done, they wouldn't have got it so wrong.

Suppose Shane Meadows might have been the best choice of director He comes from Uttoxeter about 12 miles from Stoke, not a big town, but there were a few from there who used to venture upto Wigan, i'd bet my life on it that Shane Meadows knows these folks as it is close knitt community and they at least could influence him to portray the film as things realey where. Without a doubt...thing is I'm not even looking at it from a Soul Lovers point of view but from a Film lovers point of view...you look at the great British films that have come out in the past few years and try to compare 'Soul Boy' against any of them and it comes up way short...ok you can say they were on a budget but i'm sure most British films are...Hold it up to something like 'This Is England' and it falls very short indeed in comparison...just because a film is on a shoestring does not mean you cannot get the best out of what you have...the subject matter is there...and i'm sure the film makers had good intentions...I just don't happen to think they pulled it off...perhaps others will see it differently.

Cheers for post Beeks.. Thats gives some insight..

By a test do they mean something thats pretty close to the finished project, could they/ have they got time/ cash to do something quite different....

Anymore feedback from people who have seen the test screening???

With regards to Shane Meadows or any others?? aint the point that the directors/ producers have this as there own baby, they don't wanna go giving it away....

  • I saw the test screenin too, wouldnt use the term shite but i also wouldnt say blockbuster by no means.. some bits i thought ooww thats pish and cheesy but on the whole enjoyed the film, wasnt too taxing a story just simple love story boy meets girl etc etc..i wasnt expecting a Doco about Northern Soul, each wil have their own take on it, some will say its pish even before they see it some hopefully will enjoy....it was nothing really that hard hitting as we would all like, something gritty, heartfelt and to portray the northern scene the way we feel it but alas that was always gonna be a toughy...Someone mentioned Function at the Junction but to be fair i thought it was balls IMO, i actually thought it was piss take off the scene the first time i saw it, that geezer with the tash on the door and yer man behind the decks, it was funny though and i liked the guy at end dancing but i wasnt sure if it was meant to be serious? maybe thats why it didnt seem to get much negative feedback?? always wondered about that... In terms of relating other films with a northern soul theme, I showed mates who arent into the scene (Function at the Junction) and they just laughed, hopefully if they see this film when it comes out it may spark something a bit more of interest for them..but who knows.. dont really think films n that will influence anythin that much, when it comes down to it when when we're all gone they're still be young people discovering these records and sounds and buzzing off em like we doo, lets just hope they dont make a film about how the scene was in Y2K!!! it would be a horror, mystery, comedy, thriller and all the rest rolled into one!!...

I too was at the test screening and I have to agree with Beeks. The film was total dog shit. Really boring story, not much of a plot and some of the worst acting I've ever witnessed.

They made a northern nighter look like a pansy parade. I doubt that this film will make it to the big screen if I'm being honest. I can't see who the target audience would be.

There were a few positives and three good things about the film were,

1) The music. Some good choices and made my neck hairs stand up when they were first played.

2) One good sub plot about an abusive relationship that was quite well done in places.

3) When the lead character (who I thought was good) is first getting into the music and trying to learn to dance in his room. I thought that was well done.

But it was so Jeckyl and Hyde it was un true. Some of the Casino scenes were shambolic to say the very least. The director chose to use the 'extras' dancing around the main characters rather than those that could at least shuffle about. It just looked so ameteur flashing from this England clips to some half wit bouncing from side to side.

I can't wair to see the thread on here if this film makes it to the big screen. I could see it pushing a few people over the edge and leading to a 'Falling Down' scenario. There will definitely be heart attacks in the cinema and maybe even a massacre or two.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted this film to be good and yes, we all had a great time doing it and it was a top laugh. But for me the production team only have themselves to blame.

When the film finshed we were asked to fill in a questionaire. One of the questions was - what film does this one remind you of. My mate answered - Grease 2. I had to agree.

Cocoon 2 is a warm-hearted science-fiction fable set in the North West of England that avoids becoming overly corny thanks to the performances of its mostly senior cast. Dave Rimmer, Malc Burton, and Pete Smith are three old-timers who sneak out of their retirement home a few days a month to dance in the local working mans club on an abandoned council estate next door. When the threesome begins to feel tired, they discover strange green and clear "pods" on the dancefloor of the club. These "pods" are being pulled from grannies old medicine cupboard by a team of seventies dj's in human form, led by (name removed on legal advice). The dj's explain to the seniors that energy from the pods is restoring youth and vigor to the older men every time they go for a dance, and they can sell them as many as they want The dj's agree to let the men continue to dance in secret (subject to them receiving publicity credits and radio and tv appearances obviously, but definitely no threads on Soul Source) but of course they can't keep their discovery to themselves. Soon the club is swarming with returnees, sorry retirees, with the notable exception of Cunnie, who has no interest in prolonging life any longer than necessary once the 12 minute intro fades on his latest HMV white label find.

Contains mild swearing,no sexual scenes, no violence but some 50's and 60's R n 'B , therefore not suitable for those of a nervous disposition.

I think the reason that people on here get so pissed off is, that another opportunity has just been wasted.

I think we would all love to see a movie that captures the pure spine tingling emotion of this music, and the allnighter experience.

In my humble opinion, the best music based movie ever was The Commitments. Based on a novel by Rody Doyle, Directed by Alan Parker. But most important [in my opinion] the screen play was written by the best in the business, Dick Clement & Ian Le Franais & Roddy Doyle himself. But no big name actors and no bloody pop stars had anything to do with it.

So, all we need is for someone to write a brilliant novel about the scene......

Very good point Phil...

There are some very good scripts and writers out there wanting to bring the underground soul scene to the big screen, lets hope they do get the chance.. I know some on the scene don't want anything to do with the media and all that but when/if its done right it could be something to blow away all music films that have gone before...

the danceoff at the end is the one highlight for all the wrong reasons...pure comedy...was expecting Patrick Swayze to come flying in to have an uprock with Kevin Bacon...ah well...save that for the sequel ;-)

Bit dissappointing Paul seen as you said that they were ok after the test screening........Afterall, you and the famous Barker backside (medium sized) were in nearly all of them

SHORT SYNOPSIS

1974. Power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the terraces. Flares,Chopper bikes and beer at fourteen pence a pint.

JOE MCCAIN, 17 and restless, is bored with the flatline tedium of a life that seems like it's going nowhere. Enter JANE, moving to the beat of a music that Joe's never heard, a vision of loveliness who opens the door to a whole world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino - the home of Northern Soul! Swept along on this tide of pulsating dance and lust, Joe finally finds somewhere he belongs and the acceptance and true love he yearns for.

Then, on the way back from Station Road, where he has been having secret ballet lessons, rather than boxing, he finds a kestrel chick. His best mate, played by Pete Postlethwaite, the brass band conductor and football coach tells him he's got a trial at Sheffield United and its his last chance or he'll end up down the pit like their Jud. While playing in an FA Cup semi final, suprisingly held at Uniteds own ground, he can't stop worrying about a bet he forgot to put on.

His football career over, he becomes a stripper with some mates. The kestrel meanwhile, gets caught smoking at school and is given the stick by the headmaster. Stripping leads to a chance to be enrolled in the Royal Ballet school, and he becomes a huge success as a swan, dancing at a brass band contest held outside a hospital.

His dad meanwhile, still has no furniture as he burned it in an unlikely North East Arctic winter and Thatcher wouldn't give him any dole, the cow.

A heartwarming tale of stereotypical Northern folk.

Well done Steve--That`s a great mixture of...(If i can name `em all...) When Saturday Comes, Kes, The Full Monty, Brassed Off, Billy Elliot..any more? Phew!

Wow! Cant wait to see it ...sounds very Camp! As ive said previously, i read the script around 3/4 years ago and it was atrocious. Its very hard to make a good film if you have a crap script...even if the dancing is good. Be able to comment better when i see it. Why did IPSO FACTO take the clip down? Are they not proud of their work?
