Gene-r Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Over the past 10 years or so, many "new" records to grace the scene were released before 1964, which means probably before the term "Soul" was properly used. I decided to put a list together of the titles I know from this period of music, and a lot of them tend to fall into the R&B category (love or hate 'em!). Here are my contributions; anyone know of any more? VARETTA DILLARD: That's Why I Cry (RCA) 1958 RICHARD BERRY: Have Love Will Travel (Flip) 1959 JOHNNY ADAMS: Come On (US Ric/UK Top Rank) 1959 IRMA THOMAS: Don't Mess With My Man (Ron) 1960 CHARLES SHEFFIELD: It's Your Voodoo Working (Excello) 1961 BETTY O'BRIEN: She'll Be Gone (Liberty) 1961 SHERRI TAYLOR: He's The One That Rings My Bell (Gloreco) 1961 JOE SIMON: I See Your Face (Hush) 1961 DICK JORDAN: I Want Her Back (US Jamie/UK Piccadilly) 1961 CLYDE McPHATTER: I Never Knew (Mercury) 1961 THE FLAMINGOS: I Know Better (End) 1961 THE PENTAGONS: Gonna Wait For You (Sutter) 1961 TOMMY FRONTERA: (You're My) Leading Lady (Hi-Lite) 1961 JUSTIN JONES: Dance By Yourself (US Flippin'/UK London) 1961 TED TAYLOR: I Lost The Best Thing I Ever Had (Dade/Soncraft) 1961 BENNY SPELLMAN: This Is For You My Love (Alon) 1962 DEAN BARLOW: Third Window From The Right (Lescay) 1962 BARBARA DANE: I'm On My Way (Trey/Capitol) 1962 THE CHESTERFIELDS: You Walked Away (Philips) 1962 DANNY MOORE: Somebody New (Allrite) 1962 ROY HAMILTON: Earthquake (Epic) 1962 THE DRAPERS: Your Love Has Gone Away (Gee) 1962 THE SQUIRES: Don't Accuse Me (Gee) 1962 (the next release after the Drapers!) MAXINE BROWN: Am I Falling In Love (US ABC/UK HMV) 1962 H B BARNUM: It Hurts Too Much To Cry (US RCA/UK RCA Victor EP) 1962 BARBARA REDD: I'll Be All Alone (SPQR) 1963 TIMI YURO: Insult To Injury (Liberty) 1963 LARRY TRIDER: Carbon Copy (Coral) 1963 THE DELCOS: Arabia (Showcase/Ebony/Show Me) 1963 THE CLEFTONES: There She Goes (US Gee/UK Columbia) 1963 THE DIPLOMATS: Cards On The Table (Arock) 1963 TONY WILLIAMS: How Come (US or UK Philips) 1963 THE SHUFFLERS: Always Be Mine (Crackerjack) 1963 Gene

Mike Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 excello thing, quite popular a few years ago does sound dodgy imo at home but worked for some at time when out and loud someone described it once as a sort of vocal to good rockin once played it on radio, was followed by comments such as "we had to get wind up gramphone for that one" faire few later versions including tiny whatshername topsy ? and better one by on ronn by Ted Taylor quite infamous love/hate it thing - )

Simon T Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Over the past 10 years or so, many ?new? records to grace the scene were released before 1964, How about JImmy Ruffin's "Don't feel sorry for me" on Miracle? Not bad for a 43 year old record!
Guest Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 got to add one to that list, i've read it was recorded/released in 63 put seen it on a Lupine compilation where the sleeve notes says 64, but its the BRILLIANT 'Has it happened to you yet' the Falcons (what a line up of chaps), again covered by Edwin, somebody might shed light on this one. It deffinetly a tears to the eye job for me. adios amigos pedro
John May Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Yes, that's right it did come out on a compilation ( speciality records U.K ) lp6602. It also has Bobby Williams ..Tell it to my face, another great track. "Has it happened to you yet " did come out on Lupine in 7" format, however is very rare. Would imagine about £200 mark at guess.
John May Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Gene OMG Chalky - we've just knocked up 179 posts each with this one!! You Both need to get ot more !
Dayo Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Has anyone mentioned "The Walk" by Jimmy McCraklin? My Brother in law had a 78 of this and I know it was a Wheel fave.
Geoff Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Has anyone mentioned "The Walk" by Jimmy McCraklin? My Brother in law had a 78 of this and I know it was a Wheel fave. The Walk by Jimmy McCracklin was issued in about 1958 on US Chess, on UK London, I imagine on both 45 and 78. It was played on BBC's 6.5 Special. In 1964 it was played in London "Mod" clubs, and on the dance spot on Ready Steady Go. It was re-issued on an EP, R&B Showcase on Pye International. In my opinion a great track that I would love to hear played now.
Guest Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Wasn't Zig Zag Lightening also another pre 64 wheel spin, spin geddit? oh never mind!

Guest Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Yvonne Baker and the sensations on Argo "Eyes" certain this was pre 1964, plus it's one of the most atmospheric ballads i own.
slimharpo Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 The Walk is great. There is another nice version of it by Lou Cazz on VeeJay, with the Jimmy McCracklin orchestra. I'm not sure of the exact vintage of all of these 'newies' but I think they were pre '64 or thereabouts. Lula Reed - Walk On By Me Little Joe Cook - I'll Never Go To A Party Again Harvey - Any Way You Wanta Marv Johnson - Come On & Stop Patti La Belle - The Jokes On You Rosco (Gordon) & Barbara - Could This Be Love Carol Fran - I'm Gonna Try Barbara English - Fever/Bad News Sam & Dave - You Aint No Big Thing Baby - Roulette Betty Everett - I've Got A Claim On You Nappy Brown - Coal Miner Little Willie John - I'm Shakin ( There are 2 versions of this. the first issue has Cottage For Sale as the flip. The other has Person To Person. The latter is the better one). SLIM
Mike Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Yvonne Baker and the sensations on Argo "Eyes" certain this was pre 1964, plus it's one of the most atmospheric ballads i own. Brett got this on recommendation , mmmm didnt really do it for me but just thought add link to misc group info and pic https://www.history-of-rock.com/sensations.htm
Guest Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Hi Mike enjoyed the Sensations link, yeah i picked the "Eyes" thing up from a freind of mine, and i must say i love it, guess thats the endearing beauty of this music, we all can't like the same thing, and i suppose that just shows how rich, deep and varied the styles of soul that are available to us. all the best Brett
