Just found this on the 'net...so who's applying for the DVD job then...could be a dance-off...with the runners up receiving said tokenslaugh.gif

PMSL!.. well, 10/10 for trying. Makes a change from people starting up new soul nights to make money out of northern soul. If she can do it and she's spent years dancing, why not..

We could sell venue tokens too!, buy a mate a voucher for your local soul night (presuming they don't do tickets in advance) so they can try a northern soul night for themselves

(one way to increase the numbers I suppose, give them as gifts to mates and family who have never been to one before)..

Not sure myself.. can't stop laughing to think about it seriously. I liked the line " where you can join the great dancers on the dancefloor" Hmmm g.gif

I personally cant see how it can be taught tho..to me ..so many dancers on the scene..have so many individual moves..i would've thought it would be very difficult to teach folk how to dance to it...cant get over the price for the lessons..just think how many soul dos they could go for and learn it there for fook all :) ...xxx

Gord, next you will be able to go into any amusement arcade, and pay your £1 to go on the "Northern Soul Dance Machine", and a spin off you could buy the dance mat at Argos!!laugh.gif

I had an argument elsewhere about this.

Some people are aghast at the idea, but I think its ok if it gives newbies/returnees the confidence to step onto the dancefloor. I remember how intimidating I found the Northern floor at Ilkeston ('what the f-- are they doing?') when I first entered the scene, and I'm not a shrinking violet.

It's true that the best dancers have developed their own individual styles that are defiantly unformulaic, and that you can't teach soulful dancing; but you can teach some of the underlying techniques that many people associate with the phrase "Northern Soul dancing".

Dancers have been sharing/nicking moves since day one, and there isn't a contradiction in a qualified dance teacher doing it in a more methodical way, though some may find the commercial or structured aspect distasteful.

Whether anyone signing up for one of these courses realises the limitations of what can be taught is another matter.

No, I won't be going.

well, maybe... jury's out on this one.

I took my brother to a soul night recently, he walked in the main room (northern) and said "Omg - it just looks like the ministry of silly walks in here" even I had to admit it looked odd, plenty of bad dancers out there.. there were some excellent dancers out there but a few could have benefitted from a few pointers or lessons maybe..

Yeah, pretty much. But at that point, it was the bad dancing I was aspiring to. I like to think I achieved my goal successfully.
