How Are Divas Labeled In R&b

I mean we have this word DIVA like it applies to so many of our female stars. We have Aretha, Mariah, Mary J Blige and some others but how do they get this title. Some can sing and some can sang!!!! I know the only true DIVAS are Aretha, Gladys Knight, possibly? and of course Patti LaBelle. Patti has been around for decades. First as Patti and the Bluebells and then for years just Patti LaBelle. I know her album recently released with a remake of timeless r&b classics from groups like Earth, Wind and Fire and the song Aretha's song that she remade called "Ain't No Way". I mean the song is just a incredible when Aretha did it originally.
