Scenario/ You are asked to explain northern soul from cradle to now, you have an hour at the decks.

It will be your only chance to do is... so choose wisely..

Not necessarily your favorites,

but also tunes that that have moved the scene one way or the other.

This is going to be interesting as to what you start with and what you finish with.

It also depends when you came on the scene and if you were out of it for some time like I was.

Can we agree 20 records for the spot?

that shows you play that 70's and modern nonsense lolol you can nearly get 30 R&B tunes into an hour

Where would you start?

Mid-60s Motown to represent the rise in popularity in soul in the UK?

The first big import tune representing the start of the rare soul scene?

First tune played at Wigan?

I would think 'Out on the Floor' or 'That Beating Rhythm' would be the best intro record since they both sum up the scene to a T.

This is very hard to think through as some of us have long history's on the scene

so it starts with tunes that forged the begining of my trip

6 X 6 earl van dyke

a man like me jimmy james. both from youth discos and clubs

psychedelic soul saxie russell

meet me halfway lily bryant

dont it make you feel funky joe hicks

nothing can compare to you velvet satins

baby dont you weep edward hamilton

good little you joey dee

ernie andrews fine young girl

spellbound tamiko jones

get out harold melvin and blue notes

mainstring oscar perry

if you and i had never met magic night

take me back lee fields

the bottle gil scott heron

dont you worry baby bessie banks

these all come from time at pendulum wigan blackpool mecca cats whiskers and cleethorpes

tastes change with time

just cant speak jimmy bo horne

wrapped around your finger poets didnt hear these until the 90's

and to end it would have to be the ender form the best ever soul club

califronia montage young holt unlimited

its very hard to choose form so many tunes that shaped my life

i have not included stuff that i listen too and play now these listed i class as northern but i now listen to and play tunes that are not deemed northern by a lot of people

but i will probaly change the list when i can think better its hard to dredge up old memories of tunes.

mark.

Very good point Ernie 20 is a good round number, that 3min average gives plenty of scope,

and the first and last will be crucial.

Thank you .

Not necessarily the story of the scene (sorry I know that's the thread) but it piqued my imagination so I thought of my journey.

Robert Knight-Love On A Mountain Top

Showstoppers-Ain't Nothing But A House Party

Dobie Gray-Out On The Floor

Casualeers-Dance Dance Dance

Tomangoes-I Really Love You

Fi-Dels-Try A Little Harder

Sam Williams-Love Slipped Through My Fingers

Eula Cooper-Let Our Love Grow Higher

Larry Houston-Let's Spend Some Time Together

Otis Clay-The Only Way Is Up

Tyrone Barklay-Man Of Value

Cheryl Berdell-Giving It All To You

Tony Middleton-Spanish Maiden

Brooks Brothers-Looking For A Woman

Big Frank & The Essence-I Won't Let Her See Me Cry

Citations-Keep The Faith

Soul Incorporated-My Proposal

September Jones-Give Me All Of Your Love

Lou Johnson-The Panic Is On

Vanguards-Good Times Bad Times

Wee-Try Me

All very evocative for me anyway.
