Guest Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 I'm curious about DJ Andy Smith's (former Portishead DJ) "Northern Soul" CD released in january 2005 and was wondering if anyone had a listen? It seems he cleverly mixes Northern Soul together, but i couldn't get my hands on it yet. Is it worth it?
Sebastian Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 (edited) No, it's not worth it. A couple of good tunes on there but to say that he "cleverly mixes Northern Soul together" would be to go one step too damn far. He just splices the tunes into eachother. Anyone with some proper computer software, or minor turntable skills could've done that. The compilation would've been better if it hadn't been mixed. It was released by Ace/BGP so you should be able to get ahold of it from pretty much any major UK record store. I hope it sold well so Ace/BGP got some money, but I sure won't fork out for it. I agree Sebastian, I can actually mix records but soul records imo opinion would be adulturated by mixing into other tracks. I did find the sleeve notes interesting though, and I suppose it links into the new blood thread. Its not really targeted at us though is it?

Not much of a mix album they just slightly run into each other. Still, good to see northern reaching a different audience.
Sebastian Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Not much of a mix album they just slightly run into each other. That's what I'm getting at. And as for being a "mix album", a totally pointless compilation. It would've been interesting if he actually HAD mixed the tunes together in a slightly more adventurous way. Nice to see the Lee Moses track comped though.
