What a fantastic slab of Northern soul this is.I first heard it played by Richard Searling late 90s manchester ritz nighter and tried for years to get a sound file of it.Then as said previously it came out on the CD DEREK MARTIN--THE ROULETTE RECORDINGS.I got a carver done of it along with another unissued track BABY WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND

Andy Rix turned it up on studio acetate many years ago I think?

First I've heard??? Well I've never heard Andy or Rob spin it. Butch and Richard Searling got the only acetates as far as I was aware. Maybe Andy will confirm if he does have it when he reads it. The cd it is on is highly recommended. 13 unissued tracks with at least 4 or 5 of them top notch!

I've played it out but the one that really does it for me is I Can't Take It No More. Been playing this out, getting noticed and a good reaction. I put them up in refosoul last year.

Chalky, you're right, Butch/Searling not Rix. I mixed it up with something else.

Actually, I remember when Searling played it on his radio show back then. I think Butch's acetate is a slightly different take? Do I remember correctly, Flashback is an unissued Teddy Randazzo (a.k.a. Razzle Dazzle) production and pretty similar to his Roulette goodie "Breakaway"??

Here's the story as far as I know it: there are 3 different acetates of the DM, but on 2 of them the studio technician messed up and the first 20-30 seconds are recorded way low until they crank the dial up, so really only the 1 with the sound constantly high all the way through is any good. All 3 were at Rich Rosen's in Vegas about 12 years ago, but by the time I got there Butch (I believe it was him) had already bought the first, Rich being Rich of course he wanted the same money for either of the others despite the sound quality, so obviously declined the "kind" offer. But he did have the studio listings showing that there were indeed only these. Years went by and was playing some oddball stuff out and about when ears picked up, found an unknown blue-eyed garage version, not soul but still a winner, by the Noon Express - kept quiet on it for a year or two while tracking down others, even one copy in a picture sleeve, played it out a lot here in NY and always went down great, eventually sold one to Rob Bailey back in the UK who put it on one of Le Beat Bespoke comps so word got out, goes for about $300 when it shows now. Which is a lot better alternative than admitting to playing carvers off comps

So its a lot better to play a non soul record because its rare and hard to find than an unreleased f***ing fantastic soul record thats had little or no exposure because its on a CD.

That sums up why 95% of todays Northern scene is lost up its own ass. Glad to see its not just us Brits who have lost our way on this wacko scene!

Another unbelievable statement, pass the Gin bucket darling.

Can't wait to see your playlist, Mello Souls, Junior McCants and Frank Wilson too I'm sure, awesome. Loved your logic that you playing it for 30 of your mates is somehow bigger exposure than a track that everyone knows Butch spins regularly and everyone on the scene knows, let alone a cd that anyone in this day and age who loves great and rare soul music can easily figure out exists and buy for themselves online in a couple of keystrokes, insanely laughable, thanks for that one. Are you going to tape Butch's entire next set and carve it so you can rescue all his other rarest records from such tragic musical oblivion too? Give it a break. Boring subject anyway, the whole for/against carver argument has been repeated on dozens of these threads so don't waste your time or breath. Just figured you'd at least appreciate more of the story behind the track seeing as the one - and only - thing we can at least agree on is yes, it's great.

Read the thread again, no-one was talking about playing Flashback off carver, although that would be preferable to playing a non soul record, it was the other tracks of the CD that have had no or little exposure, and more importantly are soul tracks, I always prefer playing soul tracks, and I dont actually have any carvers anywhere so maybe you want to do a little more research

And WTF is comment about 30 of my mates, want to explain that as I have no idea what you are on about, where did I say anything about that? You have completely lost me here mate, want to explain it?

And re the taping Butch's set, do a little more homework before you throw insults sonny, you really have very little idea. I was going to say I dont dj so I can only do my home play list, but tomorrow is the exception, I'll send you it, probably mostly under £50 I will warn you.

I repeat the premise of my statement, you stated its better to play a non soul record because its rare and hard to find did you not?

I am a soul fan and despite the attempt of some on here to ridicule that these days, I like to keep my soul scene to soul records, old fashioned I know but thats the kind of man I am!

Nope, saying a) don't buy into playing carvers out cool.gif if you're open to more than traditional soul there's another version of this track you can get to own if you hear it and find you like it. Hope you do, no foul if you don't!
