Funky 4 Corners Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Hi Cecil Can you tell me about a couple of things please? Do you have an exact address for the Prophonics label in Mt Morris? On Coconut Groove, were the Corrupters a Garage band or Soul? Also, on Prophonics, were 7th Court a Soul act? I understand that Coconut Groove was connected to the Davey-Paul label, can you confirm this please? Finally, I don't suppose you came across a 5 piece band from Saginaw called the Brigadiers from around '64, who were signed to Tri City records but never got a release? Thank you Keith
Guest Awake 502 Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Hi Cecil, as everyone else has commented it is a pleasure to have you join us on here. You may like to have a listen at the following clip Wigan Casino 1981 it will give you an idea how popular "I don't like to lose" was over here

Guest posstot Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 So was it a bad experience in France that drove you to write "I don't like Toulouse?" sorry... Gotta give you that one.....pmpl.
Andy Rix Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Welcome Cecil It's a pleasure to have you here Bill Tuthill told me about the session for IDLTL and that he did the original lead vocal for the track. It was felt it wasn't quite what was wanted and you were drafted in to deliver the masterpiece we now all revere. He also recalled Paul Potts wasn't happy with the arrangement for the song and wanted it changed but the band resisted. He also recalled how he structured the end of the song to reflect the sound the Beatles got on 'Penny Lane' with their brass work. A fascinating story I attached the lyrics he sent me in a previous post Regards Andy
Andy Rix Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 ""Do you have an exact address for the Prophonics label in Mt Morris?"" 666 Beach St Mount Morris Michigan 48458-1908 I think this is it Andy
Russ Vickers Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Mr Washington you are a legend & both IDLTL & MP reached almost mythical status on the NS scene...........shrouded in mystery & drenched in soul, we are truly honoured to finally make your aquaintence, i would very much like to know if you would consider if approached visiting our fair land to bless us with a live show..............i think you would be truly shocked at the reception you would receive, these discs are legendary & part of the sound track to our soulful lives, more than a few tears would be shed on such a memorable night if it ever came to be...........thanks for the soul Rev !!! Russ
Guest posstot Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Hello Mike. Thanks for the welcome and thanks for loving good music. 1985 was the year I became a full time pastor. I recorded IDLTL in 1967. I wrote, co-arranged and added voice on "My Proposal"; Coconut Groove label. I'm looking into my archives to see what else we may have. I do remember conning some people as to who I was. I had a reversible jacket. I would show up wearing one side out and pretend to be my long lost twin brother. I'd then show up again wearing the other side and ask if anyone had seen my brother. I had some of them fooled. Cecil, thankyou for your personal reply....It is a strange feeling being given the chance to, communicate, with the artists who gave us such timeless music to listen to. In your case, I Don't like to lose....as the stand out track, and others I'm sure i will find out about. I would like to ask, How old you were at the time of recording, and was this your first release as a vocalist?, or, did you start out as a member of a group....on earlier recordings. Or even under a different name in another city etc. As I'm sure if you have, you may well be surprised to find we know these recordings also!!. You became a Pastor in 1985, a point in your life you must be very proud of....I'm affraid the only religion i follow is the sound of young black America....from a 1960's, (for me the true period of Soul Music). A music which taught you about life through its lyrics that gave you willing through it's beat and it's rhthym. For you to have been involved in that period, making music and performing music, Giving ALL of us the soundtrack to our lives...you should be very proud of that also. I'll Always be on top ..you'll see!!
Funky 4 Corners Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Hi Cecil Can you help me with a couple of questions please? Can you please tell me which of these Prophonics / Coconut Groove / Davey-Paul / Washington Square acts were Soul, rather than Garage please? 7th Court (Prophonics) Incredible Invaders (Prophonics) James T & the Workers (Prophonics) Dimensions (W Sq) Frats (C G & W Sq) Warlocks (W Sq) Profonix (Davey-Paul) Corrupters (C G) Flint Emeralds (C G) Soul Inc. Funky 4 Corners Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Hi Andy Thanks for this info, I appreciate that. I got a bit carried away and have added a similar set of Qs for Cecil - I thought my first post had failed! Thanks again Keith
Gene-r Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Unsung heroes and soul celebs come and go here, but this has taken me by surprise! Warmest wishes and welcome to Soul Source, Cecil. I know it's been said before, but both "I Don't Like To Lose" and "The Light Of Day" are two sides that will stay in my Top 50 soul faves for the rest of my life. A pleasure to read your posts here - hope there's more! Can't wait to read more about Prophonics, Washington Square etc...... Best wishes, Gene

Keith It would be nice to see the complete discography. paul potts was still around about 10+ years ago. My friend in saginaw talked to him. I remember he still had a couple of bags full of casette tapes all the local groups sent him to review for his labels. I think he half heartedly offered them up but my friend declined. I told him i would have taken them.
Guest CecilWashington Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Hello to all. I want to again thank you for the many words of appreciation. They are very encouraging. For the next two weeks I may be slow in getting back to some of you. I'll be tied up in conducting a series of meetings. Cecil Washington

I've been told that a lot of members have questions for me. one of my favourites, did you write the lyrics?what did you think about the tune,i always thought it was unusual ,never thought id have the opportunity to ask the singer a question about it,am amazed frankly.welcome to ss.best regards.andy

Guest KEN-SOUL Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 HI REV. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE PIECE OF MAGIC THAT RECORD OF YOURS IS. WE HERE IN SCOTLAND LOVED THE TRACK AS MUCH AS THE REST OF THE BRITISH ISLES. I'LL NEVER FORGET RUSHING TO THE DANCEFLOOR WHEN THE RECORD WAS PLAYED (AS JOE MATHEWS OF COURSE). WHO WAS THE MAGICAL PIANIST? EVEN MY MOTHER AGREED THAT THE PIANO BREAK WAS SUPERLATIVE. AND THANKS TO THE SOURCER WHO POSTED IT ON SEARLING'S LAST SPOT. "THATS THE WAY" I LIKE TO REMEMBER SEARLING.
Guest carl_p Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 (edited) I was reminded of this one by a friend over the weekend. It's a nice version of Hey Joe. Apparently they used a real gun in the studio. Washington Square 2023 Warlocks Hey Jo b/w Girl Edited July 22, 2009 by carl_p

When I decided to auction off a personally autographed picture on Ebay, I didn't realize it would lead me to discover the Soul Source community. I've been told that a lot of members have questions for me. Hi cecil I just wondered if it would be possible to cover this record, The band I'm in are a Northern Soul Band called The Casino Allstars. We only cover northern soul greats.I have already spoke to Chuck Jackson about singing one of his tracks, which he gives his blessing. It so hard to get a hold of you guys as you can imagine. I am a Northern Soul fanatic who started singing with this band 18mths ago. So singing live etc was all new to me at first, but now I love it and choose the songs that mean so much to me " Yours is right up there". So it would be nice to have your blessing. Please let me know your thoughts by emailing me at kidd22@live.co.uk , you can also visit the bands site www.casinoallstars.co.uk Thank you for your time.
