Guest CecilWashington Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Hello to all. I'm grateful for the appreciation that's been shown for "I Don't Like To Lose". I was shocked in discovering how popular the record had become. When I decided to auction off a personally autographed picture on Ebay, I didn't realize it would lead me to discover the Soul Source community. I've been told that a lot of members have questions for me.
Russoul1 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 welcome aboard cecil one of the greatest tunes ever, will be getting played for sure on friday @ The City many regards russ

Prophonics 2029 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) This just gets better and better, welcome home Mr Washington. I am sure this is going to be fun. IDLTL was played out at The 100 Club Saturday and sounded as fresh as 1978 by Warren then Dave Abbot spun My Proposal, what a night it was. Edited July 1, 2009 by Prophonics 2029

In Mexico City, for example. And yes, we do have loads of questions to ask you. First of all: How on earth did you make an absolutely awesome and powerful record?
Pete S Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 So was it a bad experience in France that drove you to write "I don't like Toulouse?" sorry...
viphitman Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Fantastic!!!!!!!! Welcome to Soul Source and Hello from Germany!!! Great track and all that wild guessing while it was covered up for so long at The Wigan Casino and Toulouse !!

Soulsider Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 (edited) Hello Cecil - welcome to the world of Northern Soul. I love, love, love I Dont Like To lose. Guest CecilWashington Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Hello Cecil - welcome to the world of Northern Soul. I love, love, love I Dont Like To lose. Can you tell us who "The Group featuring Cecil Washington" was? How many, who they are, where are the now etc? It would be great if you can remember any details. Thanks Mick Hello Mick. Paul Potts started Prophonics by building a small recording studio in the basement of his home in Mt. Morris, Michigan (a suburb of Flint, Michigan). I became a part owner in Prophonics by assisting local artists and bands that came in to record. That was the beginning. I was the first artist to sign under that label in June of 1966. (I had been offered a contract by Motown but at that time they were signing performers and shelving them with no guarantees.) "The Group" was a group of young men who came in to record a couple of songs written by Bill Tuthill - "I Don't Like To Lose" & "Light of Day". Bill agreed with his producer to ask me to sing it. The record made it to the top ten locally but we never got any national air play. I was really amazed to find that so many years later that it had become so popular in the UK. I was also surprised to learn that a song I wrote, "My Proposal", has done so well. At one point a man by the name of Simon Soussan offered to bring me to Europe. There is so much to tell that I'm even considering writing my story. Some of the musicians that worked with me were Tommy Waugh, Bob Dukes, John Coon, Al Hatch & Al Richardson. Does anyone know Paul Potts or where he is?
Guest CecilWashington Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Mr Washington is it Ok if I still go by the name Prophonics and do you know how the name came about and was any label named after you or should all this be in another thread. Pro. Sir, it is an honor that you would think so much of "I Don't Like To Lose" that you would choose to identify with it in that way. Paul Potts came up with the name Prophonics when he built a small recording studio in the basement of his home in Michigan. I became a part owner in Prophonics and the label "Washington Square" was named after me. As far as all this being in another thread is concerned, I don't have a clue. Remember that Soul Source is new to me. I haven't yet figured out how to respond to all the questions. When I answer one person, does everyone else get to see the answer. Since it's called a forum, I'm making that assumption. Thanks for your interest.
Guest CecilWashington Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 welcome to the home of soul, and respect to you sir [/quote Thanks Dave. Only very recently did I become aware that "My Proposal" had so well received. I wrote it but also helped with singing it. My voice is the one that comes in with the harmony. Do you think there would be a market for a reissue of it?

Tabs Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Hi again, Any replies you post on this forum can be read by everyone. So you don't have to keep answering the same questions over and over. Simon Soussan is well known on this scene. (Infamous even) Choosing my words carefully he would be described as shady. So my first question is what business proposition did he approach you with? Was it just the European tour or were any other incentives put on the table? My second is you said IDLTL was a local hit. Can you remember how many records were pressed up? And my third question is do you have any spare copies you can send me. I'll pay the postage and packing. It really is a privilege to chat with artists like yourself who don't realize how revered they are in the UK. Thanks for your time and trouble. Best wishes. Tabs

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for loving good music. 1985 was the year I became a full time pastor. I recorded IDLTL in 1967. I wrote, co-arranged and added voice on "My Proposal"; Coconut Groove label. I'm looking into my archives to see what else we may have. I do remember conning some people as to who I was. I had a reversible jacket. I would show up wearing one side out and pretend to be my long lost twin brother. I'd then show up again wearing the other side and ask if anyone had seen my brother. I had some of them fooled.

If I find some spare copies to send, I'll let you know.
Guest CecilWashington Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Welcome aboard Reverend good to have you here. Hello Ged. Thanks for the welcome. I like the quote at the bottom of your post. The ease of the easy way is usually its reward.
Tabs Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Many thanks for the reply. I find the history of artists and there recordings fascinating. If the articles I've read are up to date you are now based in Kansas. It must be incredibly difficult to research a recording over 40 years old and produced n Michigan. And thats without attending to your ministerial duties which obviously take priority. I really do appreciate you taking the time to come onto Soul Source. Kind regards Thanks Tabs. Simon only offered the tour. I believe the tour would've led to other offers. I don't recall the number of records we pressed. I'm doing some research now. Steve L Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Hi Cecil -thanks for providing us with one of the best records ever made. To echo what has previously been said, it was mind blowing at the Wigan Casino all nighters in 1978 when it was first played over here!! 30 years later it still sounds as good, I never get tired of hearing it. Great to be able to convey this to you, all the best Steve
paup-ine Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Hi Cecil, Do you have any promotional photos of you and the group?, or any old photos we could see. We love that kind of thing! Thanks in advance, P
Our Kid Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Hi Reverend - truly an honour for us! Whilst I realise you didn't write the song IDLTL,could you illucidate on the general aim of the record. I was led to believe it was intended as a message to wayward youth (funny that we embraced it so passionately!!) Thanks in advance. Paul
Guest Bearsy Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 WOW Welcome Cecil you are a true legend on the soul scene oh and like Mr Abbott my fave tune is My Proposal too
Prophonics 2029 Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 (edited) I wonderer if I can help to remind you of your production and writing skills Cecil. Ok I know Lynn came out twice for the B-side but yours is the better version. Edited July 7, 2009 by Prophonics 2029
